The 24-metre air-conditioned catamaran carries up to 50 passengers and can operate for nearly eight hours on a single hydrogen fill, supported by a hybrid system integrating hydrogen fuel cells, batteries and solar power. Its inaugural commercial run from Namo Ghat to Lalita Ghat was attended by senior Union and state officials. The vessel, certified by the Indian Register of Shipping, is expected to improve eco-friendly mobility in Varanasi while reducing congestion and boosting tourism. Its deployment aligns with IWAI’s broader strategy to modernise inland waterways under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, following recent additions of hybrid electric catamarans.
