Pakri-Barwadih coal mine in Barkagaon, Hazaribag, retained country’s no. 1 position for the second consecutive year,1 position for the second consecutive year, reaffirming its leadership in safe and sustainable mining. Dulanga mine in Odisha ranked fifth and Talaipalli mine in Chhattisgarh eighth among 5-star-rated rated mines nationwide

NTPC Launches India’s First CO2 Injection Borewell at Pakri Barwadih Coal Mine

NTPC Limited has achieved a significant milestone in India’s clean energy journey by initiating drilling for the country’s first-ever CO2 Injection Borewell at its Pakri Barwadih Coal Mine in Jharkhand. Led by NTPC’s R&D division, NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), this pioneering project is a crucial step towards India’s Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) roadmap and its ambitious Net-Zero emission target by 2070. The borewell, drilled to a depth of approximately 1,200 meters, aims to gather vital geological and reservoir data necessary for establishing a safe and efficient CO2 storage process, including core sampling, methane and water analysis, seismic monitoring, and detailed simulation studies to assess the rock formations’ capacity for permanent carbon storage.

This innovative project forms a core part of NTPC’s broader CCUS initiative, which seeks to rapidly develop indigenous carbon capture solutions tailored for India’s power and industrial sectors. By establishing this first-of-its-kind infrastructure, NTPC is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable energy and environmental responsibility, paving the way for scalable and effective carbon management technologies across the country.
