People in Mumbai woke up to a rainy morning today with water-logging being reported in some parts of the city. Areas like Sion, Parel, Dadar and Byculla received heavy rain in the wee hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued an ‘orange alert’ for Mumbai and Thane for today. IMD has predicted that the two cities will receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places. However, the rain is likely to subside by Thursday to just ‘heavy rainfall’, and by Friday and Saturday, it will further reduce to light rains, IMD said.

Hours of incessant rainfall in Mumbai and adjoining districts led to water-logging in several parts of the city on Wednesday morning. Water-logging occurred in the areas near King Circle railway station and Gandhi Market. IMD has predicted that the maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to remain around 29 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

In weather terminology, a forecast of ‘heavy rain’ indicates rainfall ranging from 64.5mm to 115.5 mm while ‘very heavy rainfall’ indicates rainfall between 115.6mm and 204.4 mm. Similar alerts have also been issued for other parts of Maharashtra. The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudhurg. An orange alert is issued when IMD forecasts weather conditions that would disrupt daily life.
