The government has extended the tenure of NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh by six months beyond July 31, or until further orders or a successor is appointed. Singh has led the NTPC since 2016 and was previously granted a post-retirement extension.His current term was due to end on ‌July 31.The latest extension will ​be ​in force until further orders or until another appointment is ​made, the order said.

During his tenure, the company’s installed capacity crossed 75 GW. NTPC kept generating nearly one-fourth of India’s total electricity even though its share of total capacity is smaller. The company also pushed hard into solar, wind and other clean energy projects.

Green hydrogen and carbon-capture work also started under his watch. Plant efficiency stayed strong and the financial results remained steady year after year. These steps helped NTPC stay the backbone of India’s power sector.
