A veteran with over 35 years of sector expertise, Shri Bhargava’s monumental contribution lies in architecting India’s clean energy landscape. As the founding CEO of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) and Executive Director (RE) at NTPC, he spearheaded an unprecedented transition—astronomically scaling NTPC’s renewable energy pipeline from a modest 1 GW to over 25 GW within just 55 months.

Further cementing his leadership, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recently nominated him as a Green Hydrogen Expert to the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s Empowered Group. His deep operational experience with utility-scale frameworks makes him uniquely suited to drive global climate policy integration from the ground up.

Gracing the occasion, Shri Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC Limited, spoke about the evolving energy transition scenarios and the opportunities available for NTPC in this changing landscape. Shri Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director (Finance) made a presentation highlighting NTPC’s transformation into an integrated energy conglomerate.

Through a series of presentations, NTPC and its group entities showcased their commitment to sustainable growth aligned with the Viksit Bharat vision of the Government of India. Leading credit rating agencies, such as Moody’s, S&P Global Ratings, Fitch Ratings, and CAREdge shared their perspectives on India’s sovereign rating, the power sector, and NTPC’s credit profile.

The meet also featured an interactive question-and-answer session, during which NTPC’s management addressed queries and observations raised by participants. The event was attended by NTPC’s senior leadership team, along with CEOs and CFOs of major group companies.

The Lenders’ Meet enabled meaningful engagement between NTPC, its group companies, lenders, and credit rating agencies, reinforcing mutual trust and collaboration in support of the company’s future growth plans.

NTPC currently operates over 85 GW of installed capacity, with 32 GW under construction, and has set an ambitious target to scale up to 149 GW, including 60 GW of renewable energy capacity, by 2032, and further to 244 GW by 2037. The roadmap envisages a capital expenditure of approximately Rs 7 lakh crore, with expansion plans across energy storage systems, pumped storage projects, nuclear power, green hydrogen, and chemicals.

With a diverse portfolio of thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power plants, NTPC is dedicated to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to the nation. “The new ICE Policy 2024 continues to attract investments and pave the way for Andhra Pradesh to emerge as a clean energy hub. Today, NTPC Green Energy Ltd. signed a Joint Venture with NREDCAP to set up RE projects worth ₹2,00,000 Cr in Andhra Pradesh,” he wrote.

“The focus will be on 25 GW Solar/Wind, 10 GW Pumped Storage, and 0.5 MMTPA Green Hydrogen. This historic project will create over one lakh jobs and position our state as a renewable energy leader at the forefront of India’s green energy revolution,” he added.

The joint venture is expected to create employment for 1,06,250 people with an estimated financial benefit of Rs. 20,620 crore over a period of 25 years. NTPC Green Energy will facilitate securing financial and technical support and obtaining necessary clearances from the Centre and NREDCAP will identify suitable sites, provide data and encumbrance-free land, and assist in obtaining state-level permits and clearances.

NGEL is an umbrella company for the green business initiatives of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and undertakes projects through organic and inorganic routes and aims to be the flag-bearer of NTPC’s green energy journey to achieve the ambitious target of 60 GW by FY 2032.

The state government last month launched the Integrated Clean Energy Policy-2024. It has set an ambitious agenda for transitioning to renewable energy. With plans to develop 78.5 GW of solar and 35 GW of wind energy capacity, along with 25 GWh of battery storage, the sate aims to become a clean energy powerhouse. The state government said that this policy will not only contribute to India’s net-zero target but also foster a circular economy, create 7.5 lakh jobs, and attract investments worth Rs 10 lakh crore.

The MoU was exchanged between Shri K S Sundaram, Director (Projects), NGEL and Shri Alok, (IAS) ACS (Energy) in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Rajasthan. Senior officials from Government of Rajasthan and NGEL were also present on the occasion.
