NEW DELHI. Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD of NTPC, today received the Individual Leadership Excellence Award in recognition of his visionary leadership and commitment to nation-building. The award was presented by Smt. Droupadi Murmu, Hon’ble President of India, at the SCOPE Eminence Awards held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

ONGC honoured with SCOPE Eminence Awards 2022-23 in the category of “Corporate Social Responsibility & Responsiveness”.

NTPC to Begin Work on 2,800 MW Nuclear Power Plant in Rajasthan

NTPC Ltd is set to enter the nuclear power sector with the launch of a 2,800 MW nuclear power plant at Banswara, Rajasthan, next month. The project, known as the Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Plant, will feature four 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) and is being developed in partnership with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), where NTPC holds a 49% stake.

Speaking at the BloombergNEF Summit, NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh announced plans to add 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, emphasizing the company’s aggressive growth strategy in clean energy. The first unit of the Banswara project is expected to be commissioned in 2031, with the full project slated for completion by 2036. NTPC aims to expand its nuclear portfolio through both joint ventures with NPCIL and standalone projects, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening India’s energy security and accelerating decarbonization.

Extension Likely for NTPC CMD

In a recent development concerning the top leadership at NTPC Limited, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) was unable to identify a suitable candidate for the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) during a scheduled meeting last month. As a result, PESB has recommended that the Ministry of Power (MoP) initiate the selection process through a search committee route.

The current CMD of NTPC, Shri Gurdeep Singh, is slated to superannuate on July 31, 2025.

In light of the PESB’s decision and past precedents set by similar cases at ONGC and BPCL, there is growing speculation that Singh may be allowed an extension of six months to one year. While PESB has formally conveyed its suggestion, the Ministry of Power is yet to take a final call on setting up the Search Committee. Until then, uncertainty remains over the leadership transition at India’s largest power generation company.
