NMDC, IIT Hyderabad Partner to Advance Green Steel and Critical Minerals Research

HYDERABAD. NMDC’s R&D Centre has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Hyderabad to collaborate on advanced research in green steel, ironmaking technologies, and critical minerals. The partnership aims to drive innovation-led solutions for sustainable steel production and strengthen India’s resource resilience.

The collaboration will focus on next-generation ironmaking processes, low-carbon technologies, and efficient mineral utilization aligned with global sustainability goals. Key areas include green steel and low-emission ironmaking, beneficiation and value addition of critical minerals, process optimization, waste reduction, and circular economy practices in mining and metallurgy.

Through joint research projects, pilot studies, technology development, and knowledge exchange, the initiative seeks to accelerate industry-academia cooperation and enable faster commercialization of scalable, environmentally responsible industrial solutions.

NMDC Steel Limited Records Best-Ever Operational Performance in November 2025

NMDC Steel Limited (NSL), India’s youngest integrated steel plant located at Nagarnar near Jagdalpur, delivered a record-breaking operational performance in November 2025, achieving its best-ever results across multiple stages of the value chain. Strong process stability, rising capacity utilisation and operational excellence marked the month, with key facilities setting new benchmarks in production and efficiency. The Raw Material Handling System recorded its highest-ever wagon tippling of 616 wagons in a single day, while base mix production touched an all-time monthly high of 5.19 lakh tonnes.

The Sinter Plant continued its upward trajectory, achieving a record daily production of 15,590 tonnes and a monthly output of 4.14 lakh tonnes, operating at over 105 per cent of rated capacity. The Blast Furnace also registered exceptional performance with a daily hot metal production of 11,315 tonnes and a monthly output of 2.80 lakh tonnes, exceeding 101 per cent capacity utilisation. Notably, NSL achieved its lowest-ever average fuel rate of 519 kg per tonne of hot metal, using only sinter and ore, and recorded the highest monthly average PCI rate of 164 kg per tonne, placing it among the best-performing steel plants in the country.

The Steel Melting Shop and Thin Slab Caster–Hot Strip Mill also delivered their best results to date, with record monthly production of 2.03 lakh tonnes of HR coils, 2.09 lakh tonnes of crude steel and 2.15 lakh tonnes of liquid steel. NSL also achieved its highest-ever converter lining life of 4,799 heats and successfully introduced two new steel grades for commercial production. Highlighting these achievements, CMD Shri Amitava Mukherjee said the consistent record-breaking performance reflects the dedication and discipline of the workforce, adding that NSL is well positioned to contribute to India’s steel growth story through technology-driven efficiency, an expanding product portfolio and a strong commitment to nation-building.

IIT Kanpur and NMDC Sign MoU to Enhance Cybersecurity and Drive AI/ML Adoption

Bengaluru, 2 December 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) and NMDC Limited, a Navratna Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in Cybersecurity, Information Security, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Digital Transformation, and next-generation technological applications across NMDC’s IT and OT ecosystems.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Satyendra Rai, Executive Director (Digital Transformation), NMDC Limited, and Dean of Research & Development, IIT Kanpur, in the presence of Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, Project Director, Project Leads, and Officials from NMDC and I-Hub NTIHAC Foundation (C3iHub).

Under the MoU, IIT Kanpur’s C3iHub will support NMDC in cyber risk assessments, vulnerability analysis, security governance, incident response planning, and benchmarking of Security Operations Centre (SOC) models. The partnership will also explore AI/ML-driven solutions, digital twins, predictive maintenance frameworks, and advanced data analytics to enhance operational efficiency across NMDC’s mining ecosystem.

During the MoU signing ceremony, Prof Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, “At IIT Kanpur, we have a strong research expertise in the domains of cybersecurity and AI, addressing challenges of national interest. I am confident that this collaboration will not only strengthen cyber resilience across NMDC’s operations but also foster the development of transformative technologies in AI, machine learning, and smart industrial systems in mining applications.”

Both institutions will jointly undertake research, capacity-building programs, and technology pilots, with successful proofs-of-concept evaluated for scalable deployment. The collaboration marks a significant step toward strengthening cyber resilience and accelerating digital transformation in India’s mining sector.

Conveying (IPCC) system at Bacheli and 190T Dumpers. Work on the Automatic Sampling System across all production units is also underway. Looking ahead, NMDC is set to implement several key projects, including the Stockpile Management and Remote Operation System at Kirandul, In-Pit Modular Crushing at Donimalai, and large-scale infrastructure initiatives such as the 20 MTPA Buffer Stockpile & Blending Yard at Vizag and the 2 MTPA Beneficiation Plant at Kirandul, further solidifying its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainable growth.

Hyderabad, 29 October 2025: Amid strong domestic steel demand and resilient mining operations, NMDC delivered its best-ever second quarter in FY26. The company recorded all-time high production and sales volumes, along with steady growth across key financial parameters.

In Q2 FY26, production stood at 10.21 million tonnes, up 23% from the same period last year, and sales reached 10.72 million tonnes, an increase of 10% over Q2 FY25.

NMDC Launches Skill Development Initiative for 500 Tribal Youth in Chhattisgarh

Jagdalpur, In a significant step towards empowering tribal youth through skill development, NMDC, India’s leading iron ore producer, has launched a comprehensive training initiative under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The initiative will benefit 500 tribal youth from the Bastar and Dantewada districts of Chhattisgarh, offering them technical education and employment opportunities in the plastics and polymer sectors.

In collaboration with the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Hyderabad, NMDC will fully sponsor training courses that include tuition, lodging, and associated costs. The programme aims to build a skilled workforce by offering industry-aligned courses in plastics processing, mould technology, and polymer testing.

Admissions are open from July 20 to July 30, 2025, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Courses offered include:

Machine Operator (NSQF Level IV) – A 6-month certification course for candidates with minimum 8th grade education (400 seats).

Diploma in Plastics Technology & Plastics Mould Technology – 3-year diploma courses for 10th pass students (80 seats).

Post Graduate Diploma in Plastics Processing & Testing – 2-year course for science graduates (20 seats).

With 70% placement assurance through CIPET’s national industry network, graduates can expect starting salaries of ₹15,000–₹25,000 per month plus perks.

This initiative reflects NMDC’s commitment to inclusive growth, focusing on education, employability, and economic upliftment of underserved communities in tribal regions.
