Power Minister inaugurates India’s first VRFB system at NETRA

Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal visited NTPC’s R&D Centre, NETRA at Greater Noida and inaugurated India’s largest and first MWh-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) system of 3 MWh capacity in the presence of Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power) and Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC along with senior officials from MoP and NTPC.

This milestone project marks a major step forward in the nation’s journey towards long-duration energy storage (LDES) solutions, enhancing renewable energy integration and grid resilience. Hon’ble Minister also visited various demonstration projects and appreciated NETRA team for their innovative steps in the area of Energy Security and Energy Transition.

NETRA honoured with the “Technology Innovation – Best CCUS Initiative” award

NETRA has been honoured with the “Technology Innovation – Best CCUS Initiative” award at Thermal Energy Decarbonisation (TED) India 2025 by Mission Energy Foundation.This recognition is for our CO2-to-Green Methanol R&D Plant (3,000 TPA) at NTPC Vindhyachal, which has successfully produced ASTM Grade-A methanol — a key step towards sustainable energy and carbon neutrality.

The green methanol can be used for co-firing in boilers, methanol gas engines or supplied as green fuel, showcasing a scalable pathway to a circular carbon economy and strengthening NTPC’s role as a global leader in green molecules.

NETRA Conferred with National Intellectual Property Award 2024

NETRA has been honoured with the prestigious National Intellectual Property (IP) Award 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, under the category ‘Top Public / Private Company-Patent’ on 26th March. This is in recognition of NTPC’s outstanding achievement and valuable contributions to the ecosystem of intellectual property.

The award was presented by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal in presence of Honourable Justice of the Delhi High Court Shri Prathiba Maninder Singh and other prominent dignitaries.

Intellectual Property Awards 2024 is organised by the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (CGPDTM) to recognize and honour outstanding accomplishments in the field of intellectual property across a variety of sectors, including academia, R & D institutes, MSME, Start-Up, Corporations and Individuals.

NTPC NETRA showcases successful hydrogen cooking with hydrogen supply from the existing Green Hydrogen plant

Hydrogen’s burning characteristics are distinct from LPG or PNG, featuring an almost invisible flame, a temperature range of 1200C-1500C, and unique propagation speed. Unlike traditional fuels, hydrogen cannot be premixed with air before ignition due to its explosive nature. Our innovative hydrogen burner, integrated into a modified cookstove, not only transforms the way we cook but also contributes to a cleaner environment by emitting pure water vapor with zero carboneous elements.

At the momentous occasion, Shri Arne Ballantine, CEO, Ohmium, and Shri Shaswattam, ED, NETRA, and other senior officials, emphasized the versatility of green hydrogen as a clean energy source, supporting diverse applications for environmental and sustainability initiatives.

NTPC has further demonstrated its commitment to sustainability through the successful commissioning of a blending project incorporating green hydrogen with PNG at Kawas. Additionally, a green hydrogen mobility project in Leh is all set for commissioning, alongside an ongoing initiative to establish green hydrogen-based microgrids in remote locations for the Indian Army.
