GUWAHATI. NEEPCO, under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative for FY 2025–26, is supporting Bhava Devi Memorial Philanthropic Trust “SENEH”, Guwahati, for the project “Surabhi” aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene among underprivileged adolescent girls. The initiative focuses on educating young girls on menstrual hygiene management and providing free biodegradable sanitary napkins to 2,000 girl students across four districts of Assam—Morigaon, Baksa, Bajali and Udalguri. The project is aligned with NEEPCO’s Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) programme.

Menstrual Hygiene Management, including access to safe sanitary products, is a vital component of preventive healthcare and sanitation. Lack of adequate menstrual hygiene can lead to reproductive tract infections and other health issues, often affecting school attendance and participation among adolescent girls. By enabling girls to manage menstruation hygienically and with dignity, the “Surabhi” project aims to reduce inequality, promote gender equality and support uninterrupted education for young girls in underserved communities.

ITANAGAR. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Arunachal Pradesh to lay the foundation stones for two major hydroelectric projects by NEEPCO in Itanagar. The projects—Heo Hydro Electric Project (240 MW) and Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (186 MW)—are being developed in partnership with the Arunachal Pradesh government, with an estimated cost of over Rs 3,700 Crore. These initiatives aim to tap into Arunachal Pradesh’s vast hydro potential, bolster sustainable energy generation, generate employment, and support regional socio-economic development. PM Modi highlighted that India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 depends on contributions from all states, with the Northeast playing a crucial role. He also reiterated India’s renewable energy target of 500 GW by 2030 and emphasized that these projects will enhance Arunachal Pradesh’s status as a power hub, fostering growth and development in the region.

The two hydro projects are designed to generate a combined annual energy of approximately 1,803 MUs—about 1,000 MUs from Heo and 803 MUs from Tato-I—contributing significantly to India’s clean energy commitments. Located in the Siyom sub-basin of Shi Yomi district, the Heo project (3×80 MW) and Tato-I project (3×62 MW) will promote sustainable energy, create employment opportunities, and bring socio-economic benefits to Arunachal Pradesh. These projects are expected to transform the region’s energy landscape, support regional development, and help achieve India’s broader clean energy and economic growth goals under the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.

The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu, and Union Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju. NEEPCO, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited since 2020, has been a key player in power generation in India’s Northeast since 1976, with a current capacity of 2,057 MW across diverse energy sources. NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility with an 83 GW capacity and plans to add 30.90 GW of renewable energy by 2032, continues to lead India’s efforts toward achieving Net Zero, ensuring energy security and sustainable development nationwide.
