The autoX Awards saw over 40 contenders compete for the coveted crown of ‘Best of 2023’, reserved for only the ten best vehicles of the year. After a gruelling Mega Test at the renowned ICAT facility in the NCR, here are the ‘Best of 2023.’

In order to recognise true innovation, performance, and engineering excellence, autoX proudly presents the results of its annual mega test and awards, which crown the ‘Best of 2023’.

Every year, autoX meticulously compiles a comprehensive list of the best cars, motorcycles, and scooters launched in the past 12 months. These vehicles undergo rigorous testing by an esteemed jury, comprised of road testers with a collective experience of over half-a-century in evaluating cars and bikes. The criteria for the awards encompass a thorough analysis of quality, comfort, ride, handling, refinement, design, drivetrain, practicality, value-for-money, that elusive X-factor, as well as an all-important lap-time achieved on the test track.

Five four-wheelers, three two-wheelers, as well as ‘Performance Car of the Year’ and ‘Performance Bike of the Year’ make up the ten most outstanding machines of the year, which are honoured with a ‘Best of 2023’ trophy at a prestigious award ceremony held at the Andaz hotel at Aero City in New Delhi.

Transparency

The autoX awards put a premium not only on outstanding machinery but also on absolute transparency and impartiality. To ensure transparency, all the points are published, and the points from each jury member are averaged to ensure that no biases come into play – resulting in the fact that only the most exceptional vehicles receive this recognition.

The Jury

The autoX team of seasoned road testers carefully score each vehicle across various parameters. The 4W jury consists of Founder and Editor-in-Chief Dhruv Behl, Managing Editor Ishan Raghava, Digital Editor Manav Sinha, and Road Test Editor Shivank Bhatt. The 2W jury consists of Digital Editor Manav Sinha, Road Test Editor Shivank Bhatt, and Principal Correspondents Karan Mathur & Dhruv Paliwal.

Dhruv Behl, who has podium positions in rallying and racing – in everything from the Raid-de-Himalaya to the MRF Formula 1600 single-seater series – and two-time JK 1,000cc motorcycle champion Simran King set the lap times to provide an objective rating of performance.

The Test Track

The annual Mega Test took place at the renowned ICAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology) facility and test track, owned by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The 2 kilometre track features two straights connected by a steep banking at each end. The autoX team also added a chicane, a slalom, and an emergency braking zone to provide a thorough assessment of vehicle performance.

Dhruv Behl, Editor-in-Chief, autoX, said, “Our aim is to be as scientific and objective about this process as possible, with the final goal being to provide car and bike buyers, as well as enthusiasts, a definitive list of the top-ten machines of the year across segments. If you want to know which of the machines launched in the past year are truly outstanding, look no further than the autoX awards and, in this case, the ‘Best of 2023’.”

Delhi police said they have registered 690 cases and held nearly 2,200 people in connection with the communal riots that took place in northeast Delhi, claiming 53 lives and injuring over 200. Of the total cases registered, 48 were related to Arms Act, police said in a statement.

They said 2,193 people have been either detained or arrested in connection with the riots. Of them, 50 have been arrested on charges under the Arms Act.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly being involved in another man’s death during the violence. The crime branch, probing the murder cases registered during the riots, arrested Shahnawaz for allegedly killing Dilbar Singh Negi, 20, and is trying to identify other suspects in the case.

Negi’s, whose decapitated and charred body was found in Brahmpuri on 26 February, had come to the National Capital six months ago from Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal and worked at a sweet shop in northeast Delhi.

A Delhi court allowed police three more days’ custodial interrogation of Shahrukh Pathan, who allegedly pointed a gun at an unarmed police head constable during the riots in Maujpur.

Pathan, 23, whose photograph pointing a gun at head constable Deepak Dahia had gone viral on social media, was arrested on Tuesday from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district.

The pistol he pointed at Dahia was recovered from his home in northeast Delhi’s Ghonda. In a viral video, Pathan was seen pointing his pistol at the policeman on Jaffrabad-Maujpur road on 24 February. After opening fire in the air, he kept the pistol at his residence and fled from the city in a car.

Police said after seeing himself on TV news channels, Pathan changed his clothes and fled to Punjab. He then moved to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh before hiding at a friend’s residence in Shamli in the state.

Uttar Pradesh police said they have arrested an alleged drug trafficker suspected to have helped Pathan escape from Delhi after the riots. Kaleem, 28, was wanted by the Narcotics Cell of Delhi police in a cannabis smuggling case.

Shahrukh Pathan, whose video of confronting a policeman while brandishing a gun at him during violence at northeast Delhi’s Maujpur last week went viral, was arrested from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, police said.

Addressing a press conference, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) AK Singhla said Pathan, 23, fled to Punjab after his video was widely circulated on social media and shown on news channels. Later, he hid at a friend’s house in Shamli, he added.

Based on information received and extensive discreet inquiries conducted in different parts of Delhi and UP, the police zeroed in on the area around Shamli and Kairana, Singhla said.

On the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, police received information that Pathan would be coming to Shamli bus stand between 10 am and noon to meet someone, he said. A trap was laid and he was arrested, the officer added.

“He (Shahrukh) was planning to flee Shamli but was nabbed and later brought to Delhi,” Singhla said. “We are trying to recover the pistol used by him during the violence. He was fond of buying pistols. He had procured a 7.65 mm pistol and ammunition about two years ago from one of his (factory) labourers.”

“The good quality semi-automatic pistol (that Pathan used during the northeast Delhi violence) was bought from Munger in Bihar,” he added.

Singhla said Pathan had gone to the protest alone. He had five bullets but two of them fell. He fired the remaining three.

“He will be produced in court and taken into police remand,” the officer said.

During interrogation, Pathan told police he opened fire in a fit of rage as stone pelting was going on, he added.

In the viral video, Pathan, a resident of northeast Delhi’s Ghonda, could be seen pointing his pistol at the policeman on the Jaffrabad Maujpur road on February 24.

According to police, he threatened the policeman, Deepak Dahiya, before fleeing. Police are also trying to trace his family members, who are absconding, Singhla said.

The number of deaths in the unprecedented violence in Delhi since Sunday has risen to 20. Stone-throwing between rival groups, arson and vandalism on Tuesday marked unrelenting violence over citizenship law protests for more than 24 hours in northeast Delhi. Over 150 people have been injured in the clashes. The violence-hit areas continue to remain tense this morning, with police and paramilitary personnel on the ground

Shops were burnt and people armed with sticks and rods were on streets in Bhajanpura, Chand Bagh and Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi, which saw clashes between protesters for and against the controversial citizenship law spiral into unprecedented violence in the capital yesterday. The Union Home Ministry ruled out calling the army, saying adequate central forces and police are on the ground, said government sources.
Over 6,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed along the stretch. This evening, police resorted to using tear gas shells in Chand Bagh to control the clashes.

The Union Home ministry has asked for no provocative statements to be made and said that Delhi’s borders with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are being monitored to ensure no anti-social elements take advantage of the situation.

“The police personnel could not do anything because they were not getting orders from their seniors. I will raise this with Amit Shah-ji. They can’t decide whether there should be tear-gassing or lathi-charging without orders from above,” Mr Arvind Kejriwal ,Dehli CM had told reporters before his meeting.

A total of 67 companies, each with about 70 to 100 personnel, have been deployed in the Northeast district, including police and paramilitary forces. “We have enough forces on the ground. Senior police officials are constantly monitoring the situation,” said Delhi Police’s MS Randhawa this evening. “The Home Ministry is continuously supporting us. We have adequate force in place. We deny the allegations of not enough forces,” said Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik.

Twenty-one trains were delayed for a maximum of six hours in the north due to weather conditions.

“The minimum temperature was recorded at 4.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal,” a meteorological department official said.

The humidity level was recorded at 86 per cent.

According to meteorological department, the city will witness clear sky, shallow fog in the morning, cold day to severe cold day conditions at many places.

The maximum temperature will hover around 15 degrees Celsius, the official said.

The air quality was recorded in the “very poor” category (365), primarily due to low wind speed, high humidity and cold weather on Friday morning.

With a numbing cold continuing to sweep Delhi-NCR, the region is expected to record its second-coldest December since 1901, the weather department said.

According to the IMD, a “cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 notches below normal. A “severe cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Delhi-NCR, the region is expected to record its second-coldest December since 1901, the weather department said “The mean maximum temperature for December was less than 20 degrees Celsius only in 1919, 1929, 1961 and 1997,” an official of the India Meteorological Department said.

In December this year, the mean maximum temperature (MMT) till Thursday was 19.85 degrees Celsius. It is expected to dip to 19.15 degrees Celsius by December 31, he said.

“If it happens, it will be the second-coldest December since 1901. December 1997 recorded the lowest MMT of 17.3 degrees Celsius,” the official said.

A layer of smog blankets Hapur, Uttar Pradesh this morning. Several area in nothern India including Delhi, Bihar, Haryana remains under the heavy smog today. Air Quality Index is at 491 (severe) at Anand Vihar, as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.

Delhiites woke up to a smoggy morning today as the minimum temperature settled at 18.9 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season’s average. The official forecast mainly clear skies with shallow fog in the morning and strong surface winds during day with a speed of 20-25 kmph.

After Delhi, all schools up to Class 12 are closed in the National Capital Region till Tuesday following spike in pollution level.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said, “I want to appeal to the people of Delhi that since there is a blanket of smog covering northern India due to stubble burning we need to look into it….if we follow the odd even in the next few days it will help in bringing down the pollution level. We need to do this for our children and future generations.”

Meanwhile Congress MP Manish Tewari said, “If stubble burning is the problem then has anyone asked the farmer why does he burn stubble? The shroud that envelopes Delhi is the shroud a farmer wears on a daily basis.” He added that if people want clean air then they have to pay attention to farmers.
