Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) from Kolkata’s historic Red Road on June 21, as the Ministry of Ayush rolls out an extensive programme centered on the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” Announcing the plans at a curtain-raiser event in New Delhi, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, said the theme underscores the importance of ensuring that longer life expectancy translates into healthier, more active, independent and meaningful lives. He described yoga as a time-tested and holistic practice that promotes physical fitness, mental well-being and overall quality of life.

Highlighting yoga’s growing global appeal since the United Nations adopted India’s proposal for an International Day of Yoga in 2014, Jadhav said more than 210 Indian missions abroad, in partnership with the ICCR, will organise yoga events at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide. The celebrations will include programmes at 100 iconic sites across India, the ongoing “Gangotri to Gangasagar: Ganga Tat Yoga Yatra,” and special events in Kolkata ahead of June 21. The minister also noted that a nationwide live yoga session held on June 14 attracted over four lakh participants simultaneously, creating a new Guinness World Record and reflecting the increasing popularity of yoga across the country and the world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history. Taking the oath of office on May 26, 2014, Mr. Modi has now reached a continuous tenure of 4,399 days, surpassing the previous record held by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Pandit Nehru served as an elected Prime Minister for 4,398 days, from May 13, 1952, until May 27, 1964. This milestone is particularly significant given the immense scale, complexity, and diversity of governing a nation of over 1.4 billion people across three consecutive terms.

World leaders have extended their warm congratulations to Prime Minister Modi, praising his transformative governance, economic achievements, and advocacy for the Global South. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka noted that the milestone reflects the deep trust the people of the world’s largest democracy place in his leadership. Additionally, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape lauded Mr. Modi as a role model for lifting over 200 million people out of poverty, while Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar highlighted India’s evolution into a leading global voice with major advancements in infrastructure, foreign policy, and socio-economic development.

NEW DELHI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to save fuel and reduce the use of foreign products to save foreign exchange amid West Asia crisis.

Addressing a function in Vadodara, Gujarat, yesterday evening, Mr Modi reiterated his earlier appeal to revive Covid-era methods such as work from home, online classes, virtual meetings and reduced consumption of petrol and diesel.

Stressing on the need for collective efforts to reduce imports and help the country navigate the crisis, Prime Minister said there is a need for all of us to come together and fulfil our responsibility to reduce the burden on the country’s resources.

He said that India spends lakhs of crores of rupees in foreign exchange to import many products from abroad and the crisis has led to a steep rise in imported goods and severely disrupted global supply chains.

Mr Modi said that his government is working to ensure the impact of the crisis on Indians is minimal.

Prime Minister said that until things return to normal, every small and meaningful step is needed to contribute to the nation’s interest.

He further repeated his appeal to cut down on petrol and diesel consumption by adopting public transport, electric buses, and carpooling.

PM Modi also reiterated his appeal to avoid buying gold until the situation returns to normal.

Bengaluru, 12 December 2025: Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal has welcomed the Government of India’s reforms to the oil and gas regulatory framework, calling the move a “truly historic development” that could unlock India’s long-identified but underutilised hydrocarbon reserves.

Agarwal congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, stating that the newly notified rules represent a decisive policy shift aimed at accelerating domestic exploration and production. “The world has always known the scale of India’s untapped reserves. These reforms finally create the environment needed to unlock them,” he said.

Highlighting India’s position as one of the producers of globally affordable oil and gas, Agarwal said the liberalised regime will directly benefit consumers—“especially the poorest”—by reducing import dependency and improving supply security.

He underscored the reform’s potential to democratise India’s energy ecosystem, noting that the sector has now been opened to entrepreneurs, start-ups, young innovators, and even university students, who can take up exploration with minimal investment. He termed the shift a transformational step that could widen India’s exploration base significantly.

Drawing parallels with the United States’ energy revolution, Agarwal said that an inclusive regulatory environment had enabled nearly 20,000 companies and individuals to participate in exploration there, turning the US from a major importer into an energy-surplus economy. “India is now poised to follow a similar path,” he added.

Agarwal called the amendment a once-in-a-generation reform. “Our energy security is both our greatest challenge and an extraordinary opportunity. With these changes, I am confident India can produce at least 50% of its total energy domestically in the coming years.”

Industry analysts expect the Government’s overhaul to spur fresh investment, widen participation in the upstream sector, and reinforce India’s long-term energy resilience, especially as the country seeks to secure stable and affordable energy supplies amid global volatility.

During the 128th episode of his radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the growing popularity of the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ initiative, emphasizing its role in encouraging healthier lifestyles, especially among youth. He highlighted the initiative as a key part of his vision to promote fitness through activities like cycling, yoga, and running.

The Prime Minister’s remarks coincided with the 51st edition of the nationwide cycling event, led by Rajasthan Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in Jaipur.

NEW DELHI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government is moving towards opening the nuclear sector to private participation, marking a major reform aimed at strengthening India’s energy security and technological leadership. Citing the rapid rise of private players in the space sector as an example, he said the scope of reforms continues to expand. Speaking after inaugurating Skyroot’s Infinity Campus in Hyderabad via video conferencing from New Delhi, the Prime Minister noted that greater private sector involvement will create new opportunities in small modular reactors, advanced reactors, and nuclear innovation.

Highlighting the transformation of India’s space ecosystem, Mr. Modi said the sector has become an attractive destination for global investors due to the government’s historic policy reforms. He emphasised that opening the space domain for private innovation has enabled startups and industries to work closely with the scientific community. With the global space economy poised for multi-fold growth, he said India’s youth will gain access to unprecedented opportunities. The Prime Minister also noted that over 300 space startups have emerged in the past six to seven years, powering India’s innovation-driven future. On the occasion, he unveiled Skyroot’s first orbital rocket, Vikram-I, designed to launch satellites into orbit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the record rise in the number of Indian universities featured in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, calling it a testament to India’s decade-long transformation in higher education, research, and innovation. India’s representation has soared by 1,125%, from 24 institutions in 2016 to 294 in 2026, making it Asia’s second-most represented nation after China. In his post on X, PM Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring quality education, research, and institutional capacity-building under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The rankings highlight seven Indian institutions in Asia’s top 100 — led by IIT Delhi (59th), followed by IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, and the University of Delhi — reflecting India’s expanding academic excellence beyond the IIT ecosystem. Matteo Quacquarelli of QS praised India’s remarkable rise, attributing it to NEP 2020’s emphasis on collaboration, innovation, and research productivity. With five Indian institutions ranking among Asia’s top 10 for papers per faculty and 28 in the top 50, India’s growing research strength is evident. Despite some ranking fluctuations, analysts see this as part of Asia’s dynamic higher education evolution. As QS CEO Jessica Turner noted, India’s progress demonstrates globally relevant, locally empowering education reforms, positioning the nation as a rising knowledge powerhouse aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
