Samajwadi Party Founder Mulayam Singh Yadav Passes Away at 82

Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party founder and former UP chief minister passed away on Monday after prolonged illness. He was admitted in Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital at 8:16 am, where the leader breathed his last at 8.16am.

Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh confirmed his father’s demise in a tweet, “My respected father and everyone’s leader is no more – Akhilesh Yadav,” the tweet on Samajwadi Party’s Twitter handle read.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, 82, was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Haryana’s Gurugram since over a week and had been on life-saving drugs. The SP patron had been under treatment at Medanta since August 22. He had also been admitted to the facility in July.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also mourned the demise of Mulayam Singh Yadav and conveyed his condolences to Akhilesh Yadav.

Soon after learning about the demise of the SP founder, CM Yogi tweeted, “The death of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Samajwadi Party Founder Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav ji is extremely sad. With his death, the main pillar of socialism and ‘an era of struggle’ have come to an end.”

“I wish peace to the departed soul and send my condolences to the bereaved family and supporters,” he added.

The chief minister also declared a three-day period of state mourning in honour of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

After the SP had informed of Mulayam Singh’s poor health condition on Sunday, October2, PM Modi and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath had spoken to Akhilesh to enquire about his father’s health. PM Modi had also assured him all possible help and assistance.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences through a tweet and said: “Dharti Putra Mulayam ji was a veteran leader associated with the land. He was respected by people of all parties”.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remembered Mulayam Singh Yadav’s “incomparable contribution to Indian politics”

In a tweet, she wrote, “His [Mulayam Singh Yadav’s] incomparable contribution to Indian politics as a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Defense Minister of the Government of India and a strong advocate of social justice will always be remembered.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Mulayam Singh Yadav remained active in politics for decades with his “unique political skills”.

“During the Emergency, he raised his voice for the restoration of democracy. He will always be remembered as a grassroots mass leader. His death marks the end of an era in Indian politics,” Shah said.
