Mr. Bhowmick bagged the coveted degree by virtue of his eminence and contributions to science and technology to bag an established position in the state. Notably, Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, a second-generation steel man, had started his career at RSP after completing his BTech in Metallurgy from the erstwhile Regional Engineering College, Rourkela, the now National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in 1988. He was the Director In-Charge of RSP from 11^th February 2022 to his date of retirement i.e 31^st December 2024. He held the additional charge of the DIC, Bokaro Steel Plant from June 2023 to April 2024.

Under his dynamic leadership, RSP made significant advancements in both operational excellence and sustainable initiatives, including important projects. He’s considered as one of the stalwarts of Blast Furnace Technology with nearly 3 decades of rich experience of Iron making.

Mr. Bhowmick has been recognized numerous times for his immense contributions to Science and Technology. He was conferred with the IIM-TSL New Millennium Award in 2022 and ‘Inspirational Corporate Leader’ in 2024.

Mr. Tiwari in his address reminisced his fond association with Mr. Bhowmick during the later’s stint at Bokaro and how his persona made him extremely popular in Bokaro.  He also attributed the transformation of the work culture in Bokaro to Mr. Bhowmick and said, “Mr. Bhowmick set an example how work can be done with love and compassion without getting angry or taking punitive action.” On behalf of SAIL fraternity, he expressed deep gratitude to Mr. Bhowmick for his incredible service to the company and leaving behind many indelible impressions.

All the Executive Directors and CGMs also shared their views experiences of working with Mr. Bhowmick and wished him a happy and a blessed second innings.

Speaking on the occasion the Mr. Bhowmick said, “From childhood, I always dreamed to serve RSP but I had never imagined that I would lead this organisation.” Dedicating his success to all the colleagues and juniors for their unflinching support, he further said, “We have seen many challenges and obstacles in the journey. Yet we overcame each of them because of the sheer dedication and team work of RSP collective.” He encouraged the RSP collective to continue in their pursuit for excellence.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Bhowmick stressed on conducting such exhibitions that would create awareness regarding the importance of optimising the procurement of right quantity and right quality of spares and equipment. He also emphasised on adoption of large scale digitalisation and automation so as to plan and reduce the piling of inventories.

Mr. Tarun Misra, called for a data-driven approach in procurement, urging decisions to be based on a 10-year analysis of requirements to avoid unnecessary purchases and ensure optimal resource utilisation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. A K Behuria, explained that inventory is a significant component of working capital, and efforts should aim at minimising inventory holding periods to improve financial efficiency.

Mr. Biswaranjan Palai, discussed the challenges posed by non-moving inventory and encouraged Heads of Departments to explore ways to minimise these items through strategic utilisation.

In his address, Mr. Sudip Pal Chowdhury, stressed the significance of digitalisation in inventory management as a focus area.

Mr. Anil Kumar, underlined the importance of making inventory management processes seamless, efficient, and aligned with operational needs.

At the outset, Mr. N R Ray Choudhury, GM In-charge (MM-Stores, Inspection & SC) welcomed the gathering and provided an insightful overview of the exhibition. Mr. S K Behera, GM (MM-Stores), introduced the programme outlining the importance of inventory categorisation and efficient utilisation. Mr. Maheswar Mohanta, Deputy Manager recited a poem on the importance of the Stores Department and the developmental work carried out under the leadership of the Director In charge, which was thereafter presented to Mr. Bhowmick.  Mrs. Anindita Mahapatra, DGM (MM-Stores) coordinated the programme, while Mr. Basant Kumar Chowdhury, AGM (MM-Stores) proposed a vote of thanks. 

Earlier, the Director In-Charge laid the foundation stone for construction of two new sheds in Modernisation Stores. He along with the Executive Directors also planted saplings in the premises.

It is worth mentioning here that the exhibition being organised from 16^th to 31^st December showcases various items categorised as non-moving and deemed non-moving inventory including project left-outs, surplus and redundant items so that different departments can inspect the materials and indent the items for use in their units.

In his emotional address Mr. Bhowmick further said, “Rourkela Steel Plant has a proud legacy of overcoming challenges and achieving success. Together, we must evolve as a forward-looking workforce, embrace change, and work with renewed dedication to make RSP a model steel plant in every respect.” Exhorting the collective to have a shared vision and remain steadfast along the path, he emphasized the importance of realizing the dream of transforming the company into a world-class corporation. “We have to focus on making of quality steel at cheapest price, so that we can contribute in enhancing the per capita steel consumption of the country that will ultimately lead to a more progressive Nation” he added. The DIC also highlighted two critical areas requiring greater focus- that are achieving Zero Harm to ensure total safety within the steel plant and eliminating breakdowns. The assembly gave a standing ovation to the DIC at the conclusion of his emotive speech.

Earlier, the session commenced with the rendition of the National Anthem. This was followed by showcasing a film made by Public Relations Department comprising motivational video as well as the performance of RSP in current fiscal in various endeavours, targets, achievements and new facilities in the township. In another film the compliance status of the suggestions given in the last session was shown. Later, during the interaction session, employees gave suggestions pertaining to production, productivity, maintenance and safety issues. The DIC presented the ‘Best Suggester’ award to Mr. Manoj Kumar Das of Coke Ovens Department for   giving a productive proposal during the interaction.

The DIC also presented the Cost Champions of the 2^nd Quarter of FY 2024-25 to Blast Furnaces Department.  It is noteworthy that RSP has introduced this unique scheme to recognize and encourage exceptional cost management achievements within the plant and foster a culture of efficiency, cost-consciousness, and continuous improvement among different departments.

The members of the Saksham Quality Circle team of New Plate Mill were also felicitated by Mr. Bhowmick for winning Gold in the 49^th International Convention on Quality Control Circles 2024 held  at Colombo, Sri Lanka

The session ended with everyone joining to take a pledge to make RSP the best in every respect. Ms. Satyabati Behera, OA, L&D coordinated the programme.

The programme commenced with lighting of ceremonial lamp and paying floral tribute at the portrait of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India whose birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day.

The DIC presented Steel City Best Orator Award to 45 students belonging to different schools of Rourkela.

Ms. Supriya Barua, of Ispat English Medium School, Sec-20 welcomed the gathering while Ms. Seema Mohanta, of Ispat Vidya Mandir, Sec-19, proposed a formal vote of thanks. Miss Subhasmita Sahoo, of Ispat Vidya Mandir, Sec-19 cordinated the function. Program was concluded with a colourful cultural program comprising song and dance programmes by children as well as teachers.

Earlier in the morning a fruit distribution programme was organised at the Paediatric ward of `Ispat General Hospital. Dr. Jayant Acharya, CMO In-charge (M&HS) was the Chief Guest of the function and handed over the prizes to the winners of drawing competition held in the ward to mark Children’s Day. Around 35 children took part in the competition. Present on the occasion were Dr. P K Mohapatra, CMO (M&HS), Dr. R  R Mohanty, CMO (M&HS). The dignitaries distributed, gifts, fruits and sweets to the children of the ward. Mr. Misra in his address spoke on the evolution of the global economy from the agrarian 17th century to the industrial era in the 20^th century and now to the technology-driven and ESG-focused 21st century. Tracing the journey from coal as a primary fuel to nuclear energy and the current emphasis on alternate energy, he stressed the growing importance of responsible business practices in industries.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Verma emphasised upon exploring innovative ways to reduce carbon footprint keeping in mind societal impact and sustainable growth. He also spoke on the importance of Efficient Waste Management, Effective Resource Management and ensuring bio-diversity for a responsible organisation.

Delivering a detailed overview of the ESG framework, Mr. Shetty discussed the importance of tracking organizational performance metrics to measure progress in ESG initiatives.

Hon’ble Justice Anil Kumar Choudhary, Judge, High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi was the Guest Speaker of the event. Mr. Subrat Praharaj, CGM (Vigilance) & ACVO was also present on the dais. CGMs, and other senior officials of RSP were also present in the occasion.

Speaking further Mr. Bhowmick said, “As a public sector entity, RSP holds a unique responsibility and accountability that calls for fairness and equity in all that we do. A workplace culture that emphasizes zero tolerance for corruption enhances the pride of every employee, strengthening our collective commitment to ethical practices.” He also congratulated the Vigilance Department of RSP for organizing a wide range of meaningful programs during Week especially involving students. “These experiences will help them develop a strong mental compass, enabling them to make ethical choices, even in challenging situations,” he added.

Justice Anil Choudhary, in his speech, said, elaborated about the theme of this year’s Vigilance Awareness Week i.e ‘Culture of Integrity for Nation’s prosperity. “When organisations and citizens imbibe the culture of ethics and integrity, it brings a sense of commitment and belongingness,” he said. Elaborating about the values espoused by Sardar Vallabhai Patel whose Birth Anniversary celebrations are marked by observance of Vigilance Awareness Week, he said that his legacy of honesty and integrity in governance continues to inspire us.

The DIC presented the prizes to the award winners of various competitions held during the Vigilance Awareness Week 2024.

At the outset, Mr. Praharaj welcomed the gathering and elaborated on the various inbound and outreach programmes being organised by the vigilance department during the Vigilance Awareness Week. A short video on the various activities and a video film of the Nukkad Natak organised in peripheral schools were also screened during the event. Ms. Swayamshree Mohapatra, a Class X student of DAV Public School, Rourkela, delivered a powerful speech on the importance of a culture of integrity.
