NHAI Launches ‘Arogya Van’ Initiative Along Highways

NEW DELHI. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the development of ‘Arogya Van’—thematic plantations of medicinal trees—on vacant land along national highways to boost biodiversity and promote ecological sustainability. The initiative aims to create green corridors that support pollinators, birds, and microfauna while strengthening ecosystem resilience.

In the first phase, 17 land parcels covering over 62.8 hectares across multiple states have been identified, with plans to plant around 67,462 medicinal trees. Nearly 36 species, including neem, amla, jamun, and imli, will be planted at key locations such as toll plazas, interchanges, and wayside amenities to enhance visibility and public awareness.

The project, supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, also earmarks about 188 hectares for future plantation. By focusing on medicinal plants, the initiative aligns with the government’s push for sustainability and traditional medicine, positioning these green spaces as living repositories of India’s rich medicinal heritage.

India Become First Country To Commercially Produce Bio-Bitumen

Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that India has become the first country in the world to commercially produce bio-bitumen in road construction. Bitumen is a black, viscous mixture of hydrocarbons produced by the fractionation of crude oil, and it serves as a crucial binder in road construction.

While addressing the CSIR Technology Transfer Ceremony in New Delhi, the Minister congratulated CSIR on this historic milestone. Mr Gadkari said that the initiative will help in reducing pollution from crop residue burning. The Minister said that bio-bitumen is a transformative step towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Speaking on this occasion, Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said that by achieving this milestone, India has entered into a new era of clean and green highways. He said that the initiative will also aid the Waste to Wealth mission and support the country’s vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

NHAI Signs MoU With National Test House To Reinforce Quality Assurance In National Highway Projects

NEW DELHI. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a
MOU with the National Test House, a premier institution under the Ministry
of Consumer Affairs in New Delhi.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that the MoU aims to
reinforce quality assurance and quality control mechanisms in National
Highway projects through independent and third-party testing of
construction materials, components, and systems. It added that the
collaboration will ensure adherence to prescribed standards and
specifications.
The Ministry stated that special emphasis will be placed on ensuring
performance, reliability, and energy efficiency of safety-critical infrastructure
components, including the roadway lighting systems. It further said that the partnership will support NHAI’s ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing road
safety and sustainability.
