Government Targets 100 MT Coal Gasification by 2030

NEW DELHI. Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, announced that the government has set a national target to achieve 100 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal gasification capacity by 2030 to strengthen India’s energy security. Currently, about 22.6 MT of capacity is already operational or being set up. To help reach the final goal, the government has approved a new ₹37,500 crore scheme designed to process an additional 75 MT of coal.

Through this initiative, the government is actively offering financial incentives and policy support to promote the conversion of coal into valuable resources like chemicals, methanol, and Synthetic Natural Gas.

The flagship program provides medical entrance coaching to talented students in SECL’s operational areas, yielding outstanding results. In its inaugural batch (2023–24), 39 out of 40 students qualified for NEET, followed by 31 out of 40 students in the second batch (2024–25). NLCIL and NALCO Form Joint Venture for 1,080 MW Thermal Power Project

BHUNANESHWAR. Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprises NLC India Limited and National Aluminium Company Limited have signed a Joint Venture agreement to establish a 1,080 MW coal-based captive thermal power plant at Angul, Odisha. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy.

The project features a 4×270 MW configuration and will be executed with an equal 50:50 equity participation. This strategic partnership ensures long-term power supply and advances integrated resource development. Key dignitaries attending the ceremony included Shri Sanoj Kumar Jha (Addl. Government Launches Mega ₹37,500 Crore Initiative to Promote Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification

The Ministry of Coal has officially invited applications under its mega Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects, which was approved by the Government on 13 May 2026 with a substantial financial outlay of ₹37,500 crore. This major initiative is designed to accelerate the development of surface gasification projects across the country, focusing on enhancing value addition in the domestic coal sector, reducing reliance on costly imports, and strengthening India’s self-reliance in the energy and chemical domains. Following the approval, the formal Scheme Guidelines were released on 25 June 2026, and the Request for Proposal (RFP) was published on 7 July 2026, setting the stage for eligible entities to submit their bids.

To ensure active stakeholder participation and to offer comprehensive clarity on the scheme provisions and bidding requirements, the Ministry will host a Pre-Application Conference on 20 July 2026. Prospective applicants and industry stakeholders are encouraged to attend this session and raise queries for official clarification. The final deadline for the submission of applications has been set for 7 September 2026. Comprehensive documentation, including the detailed application timeline, guidelines, and the RFP, is currently accessible on the Ministry of Coal’s official website for interested public and private entities to review.

Initially implemented by Coal India Limited subsidiaries including BCCL, CCL, SECL, and MCL, the initiative leverages existing township infrastructure to establish robust water purification facilities. BCCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Manoj Kumar Agarwal highlighted that the heavily subsidized program is designed to secure the health of mining communities, lessen dependence on private vendors, and ensure clean water never becomes a financial burden.
