Congress leaders Milind Deora and Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday asked Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut to withdraw his “ill-informed” remarks that former prime minister Indira Gandhi met underworld donKarim Lala.

Deora, who is the former Union minister, described Gandhi as a “true patriot who never compromised on India’s national security”.

Raut, whose party is part of the ruling alliance with the Congress and NCP in Maharashtra, on Wednesday claimed that Gandhi met Karim Lala in Mumbai.

Karim Lala was one of the three top underworld dons of Mumbai for over two decades, from the sixties to the early eighties, the other two being Mastan Mirza alias Haji Mastan and Varadarajan Mudaliar.

Deora said politicians should refrain from “distorting” legacies of prime ministers who are no more.

“Indira ji was a true patriot who never compromised on Indias national security,” he said in a tweet.

“As former @INCMumbai President, I demand that @rautsanjay61 ji withdraws his ill-informed statement.

Political leaders must show restraint before distorting the legacies of deceased Prime Ministers,” Deora further tweeted.

Former Mumbai Congress chief Nirupam said Raut will “repent” if he continues a “false campaign” against Gandhi.

Noting that Raut often shares “poetry of others”, Nirupam said it will be better if the Shiv Sena leader focuses on entertaining Maharashtra with such poetic stuff.

“It will be better if Shiv Sena’s Mr Shayar (poet) focuses on entertaining Maharashtra by sharing light-hearted poetry of others. He will have to repent if he carries out false campaign against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhiji.

He should withdraw the statement he gave about Indiraji yesterday,” Nirupam tweeted in Hindi.

During an interview to the Lokmat media group at its award function in Pune, Raut claimed, “When (underworld don) Haji Mastan came to Mantralaya, the entire secretariat would come down to see him. Indira Gandhi used to meet Karim Lala in Pydhonie (in south Mumbai).

“After Urmila Matondkar decided to fight the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North, I supported her campaign wholeheartedly as the (Mumbai Congress) President. I stood by her when she was let down by those who brought her into the party. Fully agree that Mumbai North leaders must be held accountable!” he tweeted.

“It is obvious that the key functionaries of Mumbai Congress are either unable or not committed to bring about a change and transformation in the organisation for betterment of the party,” she said in a statement to the media.

“My political and social sensibilities refuse to allow vested interests in the party to use me as a mean to fight petty in-house politics instead of working on a bigger goal in Mumbai Congress.”

The actor-turned-politician, who unsuccessfully contested the Mumbai North seat against the BJP’s Gopal Shetty, also expressed concern over “an act of blatant betrayal” in connection with a letter sent to Milind Deora, who quit the post of the state party chief last week.

Referring to her letter, Ms Matondkar told the media that not only no action was taken on her complaints, her letter – a “privileged and confidential communication” was “conveniently leaked to the media”.

“Needless to say, no one from the party was apologetic or even concerned towards me for the same despite my repeated protests. Significantly, some of the persons specifically named in my letter for the shoddy performance of INC in MUMBAI North were rewarded with newer positions instead of holding them accountable for their acts and omissions,” she told the media.

In her letter dated May 16 — a week before the Lok Sabha election results were announced – Ms Matondkar had criticised the conduct of two local leaders, who, she said, were “lacking political maturity, discipline” were creating controversies.

Mr Deora, 42, confirmed his resignation as president of the party’s Mumbai unit last week, conveying his “final” decision in a letter to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Balasaheb Thorat.

Senior and young Congress leaders differed with party on the abrogation of Article 370, saying a “historical mistake” has been corrected by the government.

Backing Modi government’s decisions, congress leader janaradan Dwivedi said that it is a matter of national satisfaction that a “mistake” done at the time of independence has been corrected. “It is a very old issue. After independence, many freedom fighters did not want Article 370 to remain. I had my political training under Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, who was against this Article. Personally, this is an issue of a matter of satisfaction for the nation.

“This historical mistake that happened at the time of independence has been rectified today, even though late, and is welcomed,” Dwivedi said.

young leaders like ex mp Milind Deora, Jyotiraditya Sindhia and Deepender Hodda also supported government move on Kashmir .

Former Congress MP Deepender S Hooda in a tweet said, “My personal view is that there isn’t a need to have Article 370 in the 21st century. The move is not only in the interest of the country but also for the benefit of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. It is the responsibility of the government to implement the move in a peaceful environment.”

In another setback for the Congress, its Rajya Sabha MP and chief whip Bhubaneshwar Kalita resigned from the membership of the House on Monday opposing the party’s stand on the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ex Mp Ranjita Ranjan also supported removal of artical 370 and said its for unity .

Congress leader DK Shivakumar was detained by the Mumbai police along with other party leaders from near a five-star hotel in Mumbai where he had waited for six hours to meet rebel lawmakers whose resignation has threatened the survival of the Karnataka coalition government.

Mr Shivakumar had been stopped from entering the Renaissance hotel after the rebels asked the Mumbai police for protection from him and other Karnataka coalition leaders who are trying to bring them around.

Waiting in the rain, Mr Shivakumar said he would not move until he spoke to the lawmakers who, on the other hand, refused to meet him.

“Shameful use of the police by the government,” said the Congress troubleshooter, who has accused the BJP – which rules Maharashtra – of trying to engineer a crisis to seize power in Karnataka.

Mr Shivakumar and Mumbai Congress leader Milind Deora were taken away by the police shortly after a ban on large gatherings was imposed in Powai, where the hotel Renaissance is located.

Actress-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar said the leak of her letter criticising close aides of senior party leader Sanjay Nirupam was “unfortunate”.

In the letter addressed to the party leadership, Ms Matondkar had criticised the conduct of Sandesh Kondvilkar and Bhushan Patil, close associates of Mr Nirupam, former Mumbai Congress president, during campaigning.

The actress had lost to BJP veteran Gopal Shetty by a margin of over four lakh votes.

The letter, dated May 16 – a week before the Lok Sabha election results were announced, was addressed to Milind Deora, Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) chief.

“It’s extremely unfortunate that a confidential letter containing privileged communication was made public,” Ms Matondkar said in a statement.

meanwhile ex president Sanjay Nirupam had blamed Mr Deora for making Ms Matondkar’s letter public.

He tweeted, “young leader who desires to stabilise party at national level has released copies of complaint letter of an LS candidate to media houses to publish it… It was addressed to him against party workers after election. Is this the way he is going to adopt to stabilise the party?”

“Accepting the people’s verdict and taking accountability, I had submitted my resignation as General Secretary of AICC (All India Congress Committee) to Shri Rahul Gandhi,” Mr Scindia tweeted.

“I thank him for entrusting me with this responsibility and for giving me the opportunity to serve our party,” he added.

He, however, told reporters “I haven’t resigned today. I had submitted my resignation to Congress president Rahul Gandhi 8-10 days ago,” he said

“I am not a leader who gives orders to others. I think when there is a responsibility, there comes accountability as well. Even I am responsible if performance isn’t good and therefore, I took the decision to resign,” he added.

Before the national elections, Mr Gandhi had appointed Mr Scindia and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as in-charges for Uttar Pradesh .

The Congress, however, could win only one seat, with BJP winning 62 out of 80 seats in the state.

Overall, the Congress won only 52 of 543 Lok Sabha seats.

Mr Scindia, a four-time parliamentarian from Guna in Madhya Pradesh, also lost his time-tested constituency to BJP’s Dr KP Yadav.
