Bengaluru, November 19, 2025: Mpower, an initiative of the Aditya Birla Education Trust, has released a consolidated analysis of five years of data from its helpline, counselling ecosystem and youth outreach programmes, highlighting a steady rise in mental health challenges experienced by Indian men. The findings show that more men are reaching out for help than ever before, yet the emotional strain they carry continues to intensify, particularly among younger and working-age groups.

Across all service verticals and outreach channels, Mpower engaged with an estimated 2.83 lakh men over the review period, with the largest segment being young men between 18 and 25 years. Youth-focused programmes alone reached around 2,07,350 young men through screenings, early-intervention initiatives, campus engagements, community projects and multi-city outreach efforts. This indicates not only high vulnerability within this age group but also greater receptiveness to mental health conversations when support is made accessible at educational and community touchpoints.

For working-age men between 26 and 40 years, help-seeking behaviour was most visible on the 24×7 Mpower 1on1 helpline, which recorded 75,702 male callers between 2022 and 2025. Many of these callers reached out anonymously, reflecting the hesitation men often feel about approaching in-person services due to stigma or fear of judgment. Of these calls, 16,698 were specifically linked to relationship issues, depression and stress, indicating that emotional strain, interpersonal conflict and mood-related concerns remain the most prominent triggers for seeking support. Encouragingly, 40% of male callers reported feeling a reduction in stress by the end of the call, demonstrating the tangible value of immediate, empathetic intervention.

Geographically, urban and semi-urban regions showed strong engagement, with Pune accounting for 1,13,435 young male beneficiaries and Mumbai engaging 53,657 young men through clinical services, outreach and youth initiatives. Other regions including Rajasthan, Delhi, Bangalore, Goa and Hyderabad collectively contributed over 40,000 additional young male engagements, reflecting a broad, national footprint of mental health needs across diverse communities.

The most common mental health challenges reflected across Mpower’s helpline and programme interactions include stress, burnout, depression, anxiety, relationship distress, academic pressure, family conflict, low self-esteem, loneliness and financial uncertainty. Many men expressed difficulty sharing their emotional struggles openly and frequently described coping by suppressing feelings, withdrawing socially or over-focusing on work. Some also reported resorting to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as substance use. These behavioural patterns underline the cultural and social expectations that continue to discourage men from acknowledging or expressing distress.

Speaking on the findings, Ms Parveen Shaikh, President, Mpower, said, “Men continue to shoulder an enormous emotional burden, often silently. Our data shows that when men do reach out, the relief is immediate and meaningful. In our clinical practice, we increasingly see men turning to gaming as a way to cope with stress, which may offer a temporary distraction but can also lead to unhealthy patterns and gaming addiction if left unaddressed. We must especially focus on our young men, encouraging them to seek support early rather than internalising pressure. Culturally, boys and men are taught to be ‘strong’, but seeking help is not a weakness — it is a strength that empowers you to understand yourself better, manage stress healthier, and achieve more in life. This Men’s Mental Health Day, our message is simple: you don’t have to carry your struggles alone. Support is available, confidential, and free of judgment.”

Mpower continues to strengthen its mental health services for men through clinical care, multi-lingual helplines, university and school programmes, early screening, community-based initiatives, and capacity-building workshops pan India. Its integrated model, combining clinical expertise with proactive outreach, aims to create safe spaces for men across age groups, cities and socio-economic backgrounds to seek help without stigma.

Furthermore, for those in need of immediate, confidential support, Mpower’s 1on1 Mental Health Toll-Free 24×7 Helpline is available at 1800-120-820050.

– Non-metro cities drive healthcare awareness, recording 25% higher searches for medical services

– Orthopaedic care emerges as the second most searched speciality with 38% nationwide growth

– Women’s health takes centre stage as gynaecology searches rise 28% across India

– Traditional medicine gains ground: ayurvedic consultations see 18% growth

– Metropolitan cities show balanced growth, Delhi leads with a 20% increase in healthcare searches

Bengaluru, November 26, 2024 – As India navigates through 2024, a significant shift in health consciousness is becoming increasingly apparent, with citizens actively seeking diverse healthcare solutions. This evolving health awareness spans across traditional and modern medicine, mental wellbeing, and specialised care, reflecting a comprehensive approach to personal health management.

Justdial, India’s No. 1 local search engine, has recorded a substantial 23% increase in healthcare-related searches across the country, comparing January-October 2024 to the same period in 2023. This surge in health-related queries paints a compelling picture of changing healthcare priorities among Indians, with particularly strong growth seen in non-metropolitan cities, which registered a 25% increase in overall healthcare searches.

Perhaps the most telling trend is the remarkable 41% nationwide surge in searches for psychologists, with cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, and Kozhikode showing increases of 43%, 36%, and 29%, respectively. This dramatic rise in mental health-related queries signals a significant shift in attitudes as Indians increasingly recognise and prioritise mental wellbeing alongside physical health.

The focus on physical wellness is equally pronounced, with orthopaedic care searches rising by 38% across India. Cities like Lucknow and Delhi led this trend with 37% and 36% increases, respectively, while Bangalore and Patna both saw 32% growth. This attention to bone and joint health goes hand in hand with a growing emphasis on women’s health, as evidenced by a 28% increase in searches for gynaecologists and obstetricians. Cities like Pune (33%), Hyderabad (31%), and Mumbai (29%) showed particularly strong interest in women’s healthcare services.

The data reveals an interesting contrast between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. While metro cities showed a collective increase of 15% in healthcare searches, with Delhi leading at 20%, followed by Hyderabad at 17% and Chennai at 16%, non-metro cities demonstrated even stronger growth. Chandigarh emerged as the frontrunner with a 31% increase, followed by Lucknow at 23% and Surat at 22%, suggesting a rapidly growing health consciousness in smaller urban centres.

Notably, the surge in searches for Ayurvedic doctors, showing an 18% increase nationwide with particularly strong showings in Delhi (29%) and Mumbai (21%), indicates a growing interest in traditional healing methods. This trend, combined with a steady 13% increase in searches for general physicians, suggests that Indians are increasingly adopting a balanced approach to healthcare, combining modern medicine with traditional wellness practices.

This comprehensive shift in healthcare seeking behaviour, as reflected in Justdial’s search data, indicates a maturing understanding of health among Indians. From mental wellness to reproductive health, from specialised care to traditional medicine, the data points to an encouraging trend: Indians are taking a more proactive and holistic approach to their health and well-being.

ASICS enlists Brian Cox to take on the role of the world’s scariest boss to highlight the real threat to our mental health – the desk we work at every day

A global study shows our mental state starts to decline after only two hours of continuous desk-based working with stress levels rising significantly after four hours. However, ASICS’s Desk Break experiment shows just 15 minutes of exercise can help to reverse the effects

The Public Service Announcement urges office workers to take a Desk Break to move their minds.

Bengaluru,25th September 2024: Ahead of World Mental Health Day on 10 October, ASICS has enlisted actor Brian Cox to deliver a warning to the world to get away from their desks and move for their mental health in a powerful Public Service Announcement (PSA).

ASICS’ global State of Mind study, involving 26,000 participants, revealed a strong connection between sedentary behaviour and mental wellbeing with State of Mind scores declining the longer individuals remain inactive1. Further research into desk-based working found that after just two hours of continuous desk work State of Mind scores begin to drop and stress levels rise2. After four hours of uninterrupted desk time, workers’ stress levels increased significantly by 18%. However, a new Desk Break experiment3 shows that just 15 minutes of movement can help to reverse the effects.

The Desk Break experiment, overseen by Dr Brendon Stubbs from King’s College London, found that when office workers added just 15 minutes of movement into their working day, their mental state improved by 22.5% with participants’ overall State of Mind scores increasing from 62/100 to 76/100. The experiment showed that taking a daily Desk Break for just one week lowered stress levels by 14.7%, boosted productivity by 33.2% and improved focus by 28.6%. Participants reported feeling 33.3% more relaxed and 28.6% more calm and resilient. 79.2% of participants said they would be more loyal to their employers if offered regular movement breaks.

In the PSA, Brian Cox plays the role of the world’s scariest boss to highlight the silent threat to our mental health—the desk we work at every day. The PSA calls on office workers to put their mental health first by taking a Desk Break, a short movement break, during the working day.

Actor Brian Cox said: “I’ve played some pretty intimidating characters in my time but who would have thought a desk could be scarier? It’s great to see ASICS try and do something about this and encourage people to support their mental health through exercise. As I say in the film, run, jump, roller skate. I don’t care. Just move for your mind.”

Across the world, ASICS is encouraging its office-based employees to move for their mental health by taking regular movement breaks.

On World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2024, ASICS is inviting office workers to join the #DeskBreak movement and feel the mental benefits. Office workers who are able to take a 15-minute Desk Break* are encouraged to share an image of their empty desk, with images shared raising funds for mental health charities around the world.

Dr Brendon Stubbs, a leading researcher in exercise and mental health from King’s College London, said: “We have shown previously that just 15 minutes of exercise in leisure time can result in a meaningful improvement in people’s State of Mind scores. But what surprised us with the Desk Break experiment was how powerful the 15 minute movement breaks were in improving wellbeing and reducing stress. It even changed people’s perceptions of their workplace for the better.”

Tomoko Koda, Managing Executive Officer for ASICS comments: “At ASICS, we champion the power of movement, not just on the body, but also on the mind. It’s why we’re called ASICS – an acronym for the Latin ‘Anima Sana in Corpore Sano’ or ‘Sound Mind in a Sound Body’. Our global study revealed that the hours spent at your desk for hours on end are having a real and scary impact on our minds. That’s why we wanted to deliver a powerful message from the world’s scariest boss to inspire people to move their minds.

“We hope to encourage office workers around the world to move and feel the mental benefits. We look forward to seeing the empty desk images on World Mental Health Day.”

It is true that conversations about suicide are not scarce. However, they remain terse when one questions “Why?”. Why is it that people resort to suicide? When does it become the only answer? And what can be done about it? At Solh Wellness, we seek to answer the questions that remain unanswered about every sensitive issue related to mental health.

“Almost every time, suicide is a result of excessive psychache, that is, mental pain.”

– Dr. Edwin Schneidman, Suicidologist

Several studies have suggested that a range of factors may affect suicidal conduct. These factors encompass individual, psychological, social, and environmental components. For certain persons, mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, drug addiction, or schizophrenia can significantly raise their risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. On another end, the issues of social exclusion, isolation, and troubled interpersonal existence may contribute to suicide. According to Aaron Beck, Maria Kovacs, and Arlene Weissman’s essay “Hopelessness and Suicidal Behavior,” despair is a potent cognitive structure that contributes to a pessimistic outlook on life, a deficiency of motivation, and the belief that one’s circumstances cannot get better. Solh aims to understand different perspectives and hence offers personalized and preventative tools such as self-assessment tests, journaling, mood analytics, etc. to understand the gravity of the issue right in the bud, so that attention and relief can be offered before the situation worsens.

Isolation also plays a significant role in the growing suicide rates. In the modern world, despite being more connected than ever through technology, people can still feel profoundly isolated and disconnected from others. Solh’s Community Support acts as a social lifeline by fostering a supportive and judgment-free online community, providing a safe space for individuals to connect, share similar experiences, and seek

Moreover, Solh’s expert services help in combating this with making professional help available 24/7, including counseling, therapy packages, and allied therapies like yoga and art therapy. The Talk Now feature serves as a bridge of connection, instantly providing free professional support and effectively breaking the isolation barriers.

Addressing suicide requires a comprehensive and preventive approach that involves various sectors of society. At Solh Wellness, we take a step forward in countering suicide as a rampant social and personal issue by raising awareness about mental health in an effort to break the stigma surrounding it and bring about a sense of normalisation.

Wockhardt Foundation organizes roundtable conference to discuss ‘Mental
Health and the role of Corporate Social Responsibility’.

Complex modern lifestyles with an overall lack of support system and economic disparities have caused a rapid increase in mental health deterioration.

In a discussion on Mental Health and the role of Corporate Social Responsibility by Wockhardt foundation in Mumbai on Friday it was stressed that we need to take urgent step to control growing mental illness in India.
conference to discuss the current Indian scenario of Mental Health and the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The key-note speakers for the conference Mrs. Neerja Birla, Founder and Chairperson of Mpower, an Aditya Birla Education Trust initiative. The welcome address was given by Dr. Huzaifa Khorakiwala, Founder & Chairman of Wockhardt Foundation.Various other prominent NGOs and CSR professionals active on Mental Health issueswere also present.

The conference focused on discussing mental health concerns plaguing India, forming
solution-centric approach to the issues, discussing ways to utilize CSR resources to
tackle the problems, highlight the required policy change along with the need to
increase public-private partnerships.

Mrs. Birla has been felicitated with several awards for her contribution in the field of
mental health and has initiated campaigns like ‘Ride to Mpower’ which aims to
encourage conversations & break the stigma related to mental illness. She commented,
“It is unfortunate that in our country mental health issues have traditionally been ignored
or swept under the carpet – due to lack of awareness and education on one hand, and
due to the stigma and the discrimination attached to them, on the other. Now, more than
ever the need to have more mental health services is necessary. I’m happy to be a part
of Talk for Action Wockhardt Conference where this critical issue was discussed and I
hope to see more corporates focus their CSR efforts on addressing these complex
issues.”.

Dr. Huzaifa Khorakiwala said, “India has one of the largest populations suffering from
one form of mental illness or the other and that one in five Indians may suffer from
depression in their lifetime, with suicide being the leading cause of dearth among those
aged 15–29 in India. We must wake up and take action now. We need to strengthen
and implement mental health policies and programs in the near future and provide the
rationale to enhance investment in mental health care in India and CSR resources must
be utilized for this purpose.”

Asmita Satyarthi, Director, Wockhardt Foundation, said, “Wockhardt Foundation CSR
HUB is committed to promoting healthy dialogue and communication, especially to bring
more emphasis on issues that need a stronger CSR focus. This conference is the first
step to bring various stakeholders together on one platform to discuss this very
important issue. Corporates must take a lead in breaking the taboo and enabling
concrete action on Mental Health.”
