MUMBAI. In a landmark achievement for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Devi Nair has become the first woman General Manager in the 250-year history of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the evolution of women’s leadership within public sector undertakings, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields such as warship and submarine design. Over a distinguished career spanning 35 years, Nair has contributed extensively to complex naval projects, demonstrating that technical excellence, innovation and leadership are determined by capability and commitment rather than gender.

Nair’s elevation comes at a crucial time as MDL plays a central role in key national programmes, including the Project-75(I) submarine initiative aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities. Capt Jagmohan, IN (Retd.), has been appointed as CMD of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) .Capt Jagmohan, IN (Retd.), is a Naval Architect from Cochin University of Science & Technology. He has also done post-graduation & M. Tech in Naval Construction & Ocean Engineering from IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, respectively.

Defence Secretary inaugurates solar electric hybrid boat Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd celebrates 250th Foundation Day

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is celebrated its 250th Foundation Day on May 14, 2024. To mark the day, a series of events were organised in Mumbai, presided over by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane. These included the ilaunch of a prototype of indigenous midget submarine; commissioning of Solar Electric Hybrid boat & Fuel Cell Electric Ferry; release of MDL’s Commemorative Coin; and a day-long technical seminar.

The Defence Secretary also commissioned the Solar Electric Hybrid boat with top speed of 11 Knots designed and co-developed with indigenous technology partner. The running cost is almost 1/10th of a diesel boat, and has a very low maintenance cost.

A 24-passenger Fuel Cell Electric Ferry named ‘SUCHI’, conceptualised by MDL and co- developed with indigenous technology partner was also commissioned. Its advanced technology has zero emissions, low acoustic signatures, leading to cleaner waterways and contributing to environmental conservation.
