MUMBAI. In a landmark achievement for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Devi Nair has become the first woman General Manager in the 250-year history of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the evolution of women’s leadership within public sector undertakings, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields such as warship and submarine design. Over a distinguished career spanning 35 years, Nair has contributed extensively to complex naval projects, demonstrating that technical excellence, innovation and leadership are determined by capability and commitment rather than gender.

Nair’s elevation comes at a crucial time as MDL plays a central role in key national programmes, including the Project-75(I) submarine initiative aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities. Her achievement reflects a broader cultural transformation within the PSU sector, where merit-based leadership and diversity are increasingly being recognised and encouraged. With roots tracing back to 1774, Mazagon Dock recently celebrated its 250th anniversary with commemorative events supported by the Ministry of Defence, making Nair’s appointment a fitting milestone in the shipyard’s rich legacy and an inspiration for future generations of women engineers and defence professionals.

The massive greenfield project spans nearly 2,000 acres and targets an annual capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnage, significantly boosting the country’s maritime sector and self-reliance goals. Under the proposed development framework, the government will contribute 5,289 crore rupees for land and marine infrastructure, while the anchor investor will fund 23,964 crore rupees for core shipbuilding facilities. A 50:50 joint venture named National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Andhra Pradesh Limited has already been established between the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board and the Visakhapatnam Port Authority to oversee and execute the project.

In a significant move to enhance skill development in the marine and shipbuilding sector, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is collaborating with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL). The partnership aims to fortify industry-aligned training programs and apprenticeship opportunities, with MDL serving as a pivotal industry partner for the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) Mumbai. Over the past year, 289 NSTI students have benefited from hands-on training at MDL, gaining expertise in critical areas such as Advanced Welding, Electronic Mechanics, and Automation. With the inclusion of a Recruit-Train-Deploy (RTD) model, the collaboration supports India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by preparing youth with essential skills for the expanding maritime sector.

The positive outcomes of this collaboration stem from a recent meeting between MSDE officials and Dr. Santosh Kr. Mallick, Executive Director of MDL.

The meeting was attended by key figures, including Ms. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General (Training), and Shri C.S. Murthy, Regional Director of RDSDE Maharashtra, reinforcing a commitment to strengthen the skilling ecosystem.
