The new GDP has given another chance toCongress leader Rahul Gandhi to accused the government of attacking the informal sector with its three moves- demonetisation, lockdown and GST. “India’s economy is witnessing a slowdown for the first time in 40 years. Those who can’t practice Satyagrah (dedication to truth) are blaming God,” the ex-Congress chief tweeted, referring to the GDP data and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s “act of God” remark last week.

Congress leader suggested that the former Congress-led UPA government had shielded India from the “economic storm” in 2008, adding that the government is “trying to turn you into slaves”. “The BJP government has attacked the informal sector. They are trying to turn you into slaves. In 2008, the world was hit by a severe economic storm. The United States, Europe, China, Japan – all of them were hit by the turbulence. In the US, banks were affected, firms were shut down. But India was not affected,” Mr Gandhi is heard saying in the video.

“I went to Manmohan Singh (the then-prime minister) and asked him- ‘The whole world has been hit by recession. Why is India unaffected?’ He said- ‘Rahul, you have to understand. India has two economic structures – formal, which has bigger firms, and informal, which includes MSMEs, farmers. As long as the informal sector is unaffected, the country can hold its ground’,” the Congress MP from Kerala’s Wayanad is heard recalling his conversation with the ex-prime minister.

“Demonetsation, GST and lockdown – these three moves by the BJP government have attacked the informal structure. It’s not correct to think that lockdown was a last-minute move, and that it wasn’t done deliberately. All these three moves were taken to hit the informal sector,” the ex-Congress chief adds.

“If Prime Minister wants to run the government, he needs media, marketing. The informal sector has a lot of money which the government can’t touch. They want to break this sector and extort this money from them. The effects of this attack on informal sector will be seen soon. The results will be that India won’t be able to produce jobs… because the informal sector produces 90 per cent of the jobs. Once the informal sector is destroyed India won’t be able to produce jobs,” he stresses.

The Home Ministry has formed an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate investigations into alleged income tax and foreign donation rules violation by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust, the ministry’s spokesperson tweeted this morning.

The investigations will focus on the alleged violation of laws like the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Income Tax Act, Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act by the Gandhi family-run trusts, said a Home Ministry tweet.

The special director of the Enforcement Directorate will head the committee, the Home Ministry said.

The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was established on June 21, 1991. The foundation works on a range of issues, including literacy, health, disability, empowerment of the underprivileged, livelihood and natural resource management. Its current focus areas are education, disability and natural resource management.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi is the Chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram are members of the board.

The Centre’s move followed recent allegations launched by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the Congress and the Gandhi family claiming that China had funded the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

Last month, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, citing some documentary proof, sought an explanation from the Congress to explain why the Chinese Embassy donated about Rs 90 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

The Congress has denied any wrongdoing and calls the investigation “political vendetta”. the Congress had said that RGF issue raised by the BJP was a “manufactured charge” and “diversionary tactic” to deflect attention from the border tensions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China.

Last month, the ruling BJP accused the Congress of “brazen fraud”, alleging that when it was in power, the Manmohan Singh government donated money from the Prime Minister’s National relief Fund to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation

Former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh urged the government not to be cowed down by “threats and intimidation” in dealing with the neighbour nor permitting “compromise with our territorial integrity”.
In a statement, the former PM also sought to remind the government that “disinformation is no substitute for diplomacy or decisive leadership”.

“At this moment, we stand at historic cross-roads. Our Government’s decisions and actions will have serious bearings on how the future generations perceive us. Those who lead us bear the weight of a solemn duty. And in our democracy that responsibility rests with the office of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister must always be mindful of the implications of his words and declarations on our Nation’s security as also strategic and territorial interests,” Singh said.

He added, “China is brazenly and illegally seeking to claim parts of Indian territory such as the Galwan Valley and the Pangong Tso Lake by committing multiple incursions between April 2020 till date. We cannot and will not be cowed down by threats and intimidation nor permit a compromise with our territorial integrity. The Prime Minister cannot allow them to use his words as a vindication of their position and must ensure that all organs of the government work together to tackle this crisis and prevent it from escalating further.”

The senior Congress leader also reminded the government “that disinformation is no substitute for diplomacy or decisive leadership. The truth cannot be suppressed by having pliant allies spout comforting but false statements”.
