Kolkata, 7th March’25: Women have been the pillars of families, workplaces, and society for ages, but their health has always been secondary to the responsibilities of life. This International Women’s Day, Manipal Hospitals made a bold move in rewriting that script with a strong initiative focused on women’s health and empowerment. The hospital gathered working professionals, women HR heads, police officers, and dignified members of the IAS and IPS Women’s Association for an illuminating and festive morning under the theme “The Power of Her”, in the presence of the doctors from all units of the hospital group.

“The Power of Her” is not just a theme; it is a declaration that when a woman is empowered, an entire community flourishes. Women are the silent architects of strength, balancing careers, families, and societal expectations, yet their own well-being often takes a backseat. ‘Power of Her’ is about reclaiming that space, ensuring that every woman prioritizes her health, her dreams, and her voice. It is a tribute to the resilience of women—those who have fought battles, shattered glass ceilings, and redefined possibilities. The ceremony began with an emergency life-saving Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, which provided the participants with essential first-response skills. This was then preceded by a ceremonial inauguration process, which included a lamp-lighting ceremony.

Perhaps the most highly awaited part of the event was the Doctor and Patient Case Study Session, wherein inspiring medical cases by Dr. Sutanu Hazra, Senior Consultant & HOD – Orthopaedics, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur Unit, Dr Parijat Deb Choudhary, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur Unit, Dr. Sanchila Talukdar, Consultant – Obstetrics And Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur Unit, Dr. Pooja Agarwal, Consultant of Surgical Oncology (Breast Surgery), Medica Superspecialty Hospital, part of Manipal Hospitals Group, Dr. Arindam Pande, Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiology, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, part of Manipal Hospitals Group, Dr. Amitabha Ghosh, Consultant- General & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria Unit, Dr. Saswati Sinha, Consultant – Critical Care, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria Unit, Dr. Irina Dey, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Ansu Sen, Consultant – Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Salt Lake revealed stories of courage, specialist treatment, and lives altered. These were stories that stood as a tribute to the courage of women and the life-altering power of prompt medical treatment.

A thought-provoking panel discussion further explored the most pressing health concerns faced by women across different life stages with expert opinions from Manipal Hospitals’ specialists. The panelists were Dr. Prerna Goenka, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Manipal Hospital, Saltlake, Dr. Abhinibesh Chatterjee, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynecology, Manipal Hospital, Saltlake, Dr. Sanchila Talukdar, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, Dr. Arunava Roy, Senior Consultant & Head (Gynecologic Oncology & Women Cancer Initiative), Medica Superspecialty Hospital, part of Manipal Hospitals, Dr. Rajib Basu, Consultant Orthopaedics Specialist, Manipal Hospitals, Dhakuria, and Dr. Subhasis Roy Chowdhury, Senior Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway.

In the discussion, Dr. Prerna Goenka, shared, “Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies, especially in calcium and iron, which are vital for their growth and overall development. Prioritizing timely immunizations and routine health check-ups is essential to building a strong foundation for their long-term well-being.”

While Dr. Abhinibesh Chatterjee, expressed, “Adolescence is a transformative phase where awareness about pubertal development, hygiene, sanitation, and sex education becomes essential. Equipping young girls with the right knowledge empowers them to make informed health choices for the future.”

In her address, Dr. Sanchila Talukdar, said, “”From early adulthood to middle age, women face a range of health challenges, including PCOD, irregular periods, anemia, obesity, and menopausal symptoms. Balancing work-life responsibilities while prioritizing health through regular screenings and lifestyle modifications is key to overall well-being.”

Dr. Arunava Roy highlighted the critical role of early cancer detection in women, stating, “The increasing prevalence of breast and cervical cancer underscores the urgency of regular screenings. Raising awareness about preventive measures and available treatment options is essential to lowering cancer-related mortality and enhancing overall quality of life.”

Dr. Rajib Basu, explained the orthopedic issues women face during mid-age in the discussion and shared, “Osteoporosis and arthritis are major concerns for women in midlife and beyond, affecting mobility and overall health. Early intervention, adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, and an active lifestyle can help maintain bone strength and prevent long-term complications.”

Dr. Subhasis Roy Chowdhury, talked about heart health of women during the discussion and stated, “”cardiovascular diseases are increasingly affecting women, often with subtle symptoms that go unnoticed. Regular heart check-ups, a balanced diet, and stress management are essential to mitigating risks and ensuring a healthy heart at every stage of life.”

Apart from the health discussions, the event brought to the forefront women entrepreneurs and their resilience and contributions to society. The women had overcome adversity, broken barriers, and opened doors for others, and their success was something to be celebrated.

Attached are the press releases (English and Hindi) with pictures from the event for your perusal.

New Delhi, January 3, 2025: Manipal Hospitals, Broadway successfully handled a rare instance of bilateral Herpes Zoster in Nanda Ghosh, a 74-year-old woman. This is only the fourth documented case of bilateral Herpes Zoster in the country involving a patient who is not immunocompromised. She was brought to the hospital with complaints like fever, high-grade headache, nasal discharge, congestion, and coughing, upon examination, vesiculopapular rashes (small bumps or fluid-filled blisters) among other symptoms suggested a severe and rare presentation of the Herpes virus.

Imagine suffering from days of fever, unceasing headache, and pain so inexplicable it just won’t subside. Despite a growing sense that something is seriously wrong, the underlying cause remains unknown. Such was the condition of this elderly patient till her son brought her to Manipal Hospital, Broadway where finally her condition found a diagnosis and treatment.

Herpes Zoster, commonly known as shingles can cause painful rashes and typically forms along a single nerve root (dermatome) on one side of the body, often affecting areas like the chest, abdomen, or face. However, in this case, it manifested bilaterally, which is extremely rare. The lesions formed on both sides of the face, including around the forehead, cheeks, and eyes, which is highly unusual in someone in relatively healthy condition.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, confirmed the diagnosis through an extensive investigation. The patient was treated with antiviral medication (Zovirax) to target the Herpes virus and antibiotics (Meropenem) to manage secondary bacterial infections. Dermatologists and ophthalmologists were consulted to ensure comprehensive care.

Dr. Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, explained, “This case was a medical rarity, especially in a healthy elderly individual without immunosuppression. Such cases challenge conventional medical understanding and require advanced diagnostic expertise. If left untreated, Herpes Zoster can lead to severe complications such as blindness, hearing loss, and nerve damage. Getting the shingles vaccine can prevent herpes outbreaks. The shingles vaccine is administered in a 2-dose series, with the second dose given 2 to 6 months after the first for optimal effectiveness. Timely diagnosis and treatment are essential in managing the condition and preventing complications. While this vaccine is recommended for all ages, this is particularly beneficial for the elderly or those at higher risk.”

Nanda devi’s son shared his emotional journey, stating, “Watching my mother suffer without knowing what was wrong was heart-wrenching. This is the fourth time we have relied on Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, and every time, they have exceeded our expectations. My mother’s condition was critical and very unusual, but the doctors here handled it with extraordinary care and expertise. Thanks to their efforts, my mother is now back home with her family. We are deeply thankful.”

In a week, the patient showed great improvement under the devoted care of the specialists at Manipal Hospital, Broadway. Her fever abated, and rashes resolved without secondary infection; her general condition stabilized. The patient was discharged in ten days with overall good health and immense gratitude regarding the compassionate and highly professional treatment.

New Delhi, 21st November 2024: Marking a transformative milestone in cardiac care, Manipal Hospitals, one of the largest healthcare networks in India announced the successful insertion of an AI-driven, wireless injectable pacemaker. Developed by Abbott, their Aveir Leadless pacemaker entered the Indian market a few days back. Notably, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria has become the first center in Eastern India to perform the procedure. This life-saving device was recently inserted in a 65-year-old patient’s heart, making them the first in this region to receive the futuristic pacemaker. Already in use across the United States and Europe, the innovative pacemaker provides Indian patients with a safer and less invasive alternative to traditional pacemakers for managing heart rhythm disorders.

The event was attended by eminent cardiologists from Manipal Hospitals, including Dr. P.K. Hazra, Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, Dr. Sumanta Chatterjee, Consultant Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria Dr. Soumya Kanti Dutta, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, and Dr. Dilip Kumar, Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab & Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist, Medica Superspecialty Hospital (An unit of Manipal Hospitals). These experts pointed to the increasing number of pacemaker insertion surgeries in India and how wireless pacemakers can be a better option for many. Mr. Rajesh Pareekh, Unit Head at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, also attended the event emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical solutions.

According to the Journal of Cardiovascular Disease, nearly 40,000 people undergo pacemaker insertion surgery annually in India. The Aveir Leadless pacemaker only weighs 2.4 grams and uses nanotechnology to remain securely positioned within the heart. With a lifespan of 20-25 years, the device has a long life that’s almost three times longer than typical pacemakers (7-8 years) which reduces the need for pacemaker replacement. Besides, its non-magnetic design makes it immune to airport scanners, MRI machines, and high-voltage electrical currents ensuring that the patient’s day-to-day functionality remains uncompromised.

Dr. P.K. Hazra, Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria explained the significance of the new device, “While the pacemaker is not rechargeable, it has a unique advantage. It can be upgradable from a single to a dual-chamber configuration, offering a versatile and long-term solution for patients. It can efficiently separate and regulate the right atrium and the right ventricle of the heart. This pacemaker not only eliminates the need for invasive surgery and external wires but also features Bluetooth-enabled technology, allowing for remote monitoring and adjustments. Specialists from all over the world can now monitor their patients, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits.”

Dr. Dilip Kumar, Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab & Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist, Medica Superspecialty Hospital (An unit of Manipal Hospitals) stated, “Wireless pacemakers are now becoming a fully-fledged reality. While wireless pacemakers are not new, the previous models couldn’t pace both chambers—the atrium and the ventricles. This innovation excites us because it significantly reduces the risks of complications like hematoma formation, infections, lead dislodgement, and other lead-related issues. It offers unparalleled comfort for both doctors and patients.”

Dr. Sumanta Chatterjee, Consultant Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria added, “This pacemaker opens new possibilities for patients who were previously deemed unsuitable for conventional pacemaker implants. Traditional pacemakers require invasive surgery to implant a device and wires (leads) into the chest, often leading to complications such as infections. The injectable wireless pacemaker, however, is injected directly into the heart’s right ventricle, eliminating the need for external wires and surgical pockets, which are the primary causes of infections in patients. This device is perfect for those with compromised immunity or conditions like skin issues, those on dialysis, or patients who are on blood thinners. The device’s minimally invasive nature also makes it ideal for elderly patients or young women concerned about scarring.”

India has become the third country in the world to embrace the USFDA and the European Medical Authority-approved injectable pacemaker signalling interest in improving cardiac healthcare in the country. Notably, the procedure can only be carried out by professionals who have received proper training and certification to ensure top-quality care. The introduction of this new wireless pacemaker in India provides patients with a permanent solution that can improve their quality of life and guarantee more effective cardiac care.

~ ‘Hridoye Jurey Kolkata’ initiative aims to move the city towards a healthier heart ~

~ Heart-shaped traffic lights; QR codes for CPR training ~

New Delhi, 26thSeptember 2024: In a major step towards building a heart-healthy city, Manipal Hospitals, among the top healthcare service providers of India, introduced its Hridoye Jurey Kolkata initiative today. The event was organized as a prelude to the World Heart Day, observed globally every year on September 29th. The engaging sessions included leading cardiac specialists from all units of Manipal Hospitals in Kolkata, who shared their varied experiences in cardiovascular health and innovative surgeries that are transforming medical discourse around patient outcomes.

The event was attended by Chief Guest, Mr. Barun Chanda, prominent actor and author. It also witnessed experts in cardiology, including Dr Prakash Kumar Hazra, Director & HoD, Cardiology, Manipal Hospitals, Dhakuria, Dr Rabin Chakraborty, Senior Vice Chairman & Head of Cardiology, Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a part of Manipal Hospitals), and Dr Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman & Head of Cardiac Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a part of Manipal Hospitals), along with Mr Ayanabh DebGupta, Regional COO, Manipal Hospitals (East), addressed the noble healthcare initiative.

The event also saw the launch of two groundbreaking awareness initiatives. ‘One Scan Can Save a Life’, in which boards with a QR code will be fixed at traffic signals. By scanning the code, citizens can get instant access to MARS (Manipal Ambulance Response Service), promoting both 24×7 Emergency Service, along with informative video tutorials on learning how to administer CPR (cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Procedure). As part of the initiative, traffic lights across the jurisdiction of Bidhan Nagar Police Commissionerate will be displaying heart-shapes, instead of the usual round shape, from 25th September night till 30th September, at important crossroads. The unique traffic signals are expected to constantly instill awareness of heart health amongst the people of Kolkata.

The ‘Hridoye Jurey Kolkata’ campaign aims to ensure at least 3 percent of Indians know how to administer CPR. Manipal Hospitals conducted an extensive CPR training program for community members, including Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), school students, staff and principals, security guards, police personnel, HR heads, and corporate employees. The initiative, called ‘Heart Smart Kolkata’ aims to develop a database of people trained in CPR all over the city.

This was followed by two panel discussions — Heart Problems in Women, and Cardiac Surgery: Myths Vs Facts — where top cardiologists and cardiac surgeons from Manipal Hospitals provided valuable insights.

Mr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Hospitals East, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Hridoye Jurey Kolkata aims to build communities of heroes and survivors by improving action and response to cardiac arrest through training, preparation and response protocols. We intend to create a heart safe community through training citizens in CPR and we are actively taking this initiative across all Manipal group hospitals in the East. We want the message to be spread across schools, colleges, corporates, clubs and all other associations so that those who are trained in CPR can train their near and dear ones. This way we can create a huge pool of CPR trained resources around us, which will help us to save many a lives.”

Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman & Head of Cardiac Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a part of Manipal Hospitals), further highlighted Manipal Hospitals’ commitment to the initiative, stating, “At Manipal Hospitals, our vision is to revolutionize the cardiac care system of Kolkata while offering the best and latest treatments.”

“Cardiovascular diseases are ranked as the leading causes of death, affecting one-third of all global deaths; it therefore becomes crucial to address prevention, early intervention, and effective management of these conditions. ‘Hridoye Jurey Kolkata’ is a proof of our commitment to make the city a heart smart one. Another significant achievement of our work includes the swift solution to the method of using a Quick Response Code (QR) to access emergency assistance or a CPR demonstration and the reminder through the heart-shaped traffic signs that make the community aware of cardiovascular diseases. We seek to make a lasting change and create a force of people capable of making life-saving CPR actions that can cover minimum 3% population of India. As a team, we are hopeful to action against premature mortality and provide efficient care for heart health risks for the populace of Kolkata,” Dr Sarkar added.

Dr. Rabin Chakraborty, Senior Vice Chairman & Head of Cardiology, Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a part of Manipal Hospitals), commented, “The rising incidences of cardiovascular diseases especially among patients between 25-40 years is a matter of grave concern. The percentage of heart attacks before the age of 50 has gone up to 50% over last decade. More than 25% suffer heart attacks before their 40th birthday. Even women are succumbing to heart failures at a much younger age. As per research by the American Heart Association, in the last decade, there has been a 20% increase in heart attacks in women under 55. Keeping these critical factors in mind, as doctors, we feel there is a need to focus on preventive measures, early diagnosis, and timely treatment. The ‘Hridoye Jurey Kolkata’ initiative by Manipal Hospitals is a timely initiative in making Kolkata a heart-healthy city. We need to educate the community, society at large and change specific behaviors for prevention of heart diseases, improving the health of individuals.”

Dr. Prakash Kumar Hazra, Director & HoD, Cardiology, Manipal Hospitals, Dhakuria, said, “This initiative that we have taken up this World Heart Day, will make people of Kolkata more aware about their heart health. Moreover, training common people in CPR techniques is not only unique, it is also crucial. Knowing CPR can help save thousands of lives because even the basic effort to resuscitate the heart till a heart attack patient is brought to a hospital can help. This World Heart Day we have also taken the pledge of ‘Mission 2 to 3’ meaning that while two percent Indians already know CPR, we want to train the general public and take up the percentage to three, so that more and more people are encouraged to learn this technique.”

During the panel discussions important facets were highlighted by the doctors (refer to annexure below) and the specialists exchanged views and presented various aspects regarding cardiac health, liberal medical preventative measures, and contemporary trends in cardiac treatment.

According to World Heart Federation, 1 in 3 deaths across the globe are caused by cardiovascular diseases, and majority of premature heart disease and stroke are preventable and treatable, if the patient is brought to a hospital within the golden hour. With this heart smart program being run in Kolkata, Manipal Hospitals is confident that there will be an improvement in the heart health status of every Kolkatan.
