The scope of work encompasses engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a Linear Low-Density Polyethylene / High-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE / HDPE) Swing Unit comprising two trains of 575 KTPA each, at Bina in Madhya Pradesh.

To be executed by L&T Onshore on a Lump Sum Turnkey basis, it will be India’s largest LLDPE / HDPE Swing Unit, setting a new benchmark in polyethylene production capacity.

The project forms an integral part of BPCL’s Bina Petrochemicals & Refinery Expansion Project which aims to set up a petrochemical complex and enhance refinery capacity from 7.8 MMTPA to ~11 MMTPA. It aligns with Government of India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision by strengthening domestic manufacturing and achieving self-sufficiency in polymer production.

Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub has been conceived as a fully integrated facility with its own captive renewable electricity generation powered solely by Solar and Wind. The Renewables & Grid scope of the project involves multiple facilities including Solar PV, Wind and Battery Energy Storage System plants along with associated substations and transmission lines.

The MOU aims to establish a collaborative framework to design and reach the best configuration and achieve the performance targets for the Renewables & Grid scope. The cooperation involves a commitment from Larsen & Toubro to enter into a EPC contract once the final proposal is accepted.

Its Construction Equipment (CE) business unit has received long term after sales support orders from major coal and cement producers in India towards the supply of Komatsu mining equipment. In India, the order pertains to revamping power distribution with SCADA and smart technology integration in two towns. Jobs pertaining to distribution transformer station and conversion of overhead electrical lines into underground cabling are also in the scope.

In UAE, the order pertains to design, delivery and construction of two ±300 MVAr STATCOM systems. These will be installed at the existing 400 kV substations for dynamic reactive power compensation. STATCOM provides automated and instantaneous response to deter system fluctuations, and the power quality improves as it injects or absorb reactive power in real time, thereby stabilising the voltage.

Another order has been received from Oman for establishing a 400/132 kV grid station, along with associated 400 kV transmission line segment.

NPL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro and the thermal power plant is located in Punjab’s Patiala district.

In its latest report titled “Decarbonizing the Coal-based Thermal Power Sector in India: A Roadmap,” released recently, CSE evaluated the emission intensity of all coal-based thermal power plants in India and identified Rajpura plant among the top performers.

According to CSE, Rajpura plant achieved an emission factor of 0.84 tonne/MWh, a benchmark among all supercritical power units in the country. This is significantly better than the national average emission factor of 0.97 tonne/MWh.

The CSE report also highlighted the plant’s auxiliary power consumption rate of 4.62 per cent, the lowest in the sector. Auxiliary power consumption refers to the portion of electricity used by a plant to operate its systems — such as pumps, fans, and other essential equipment. A lower auxiliary power consumption rate indicates higher operational efficiency, as more of the generated power is available for external supply.

“Benchmark set by Rajpura TPP nudges other coal based TPPs to adopt operational and modernisation measures to achieve emission intensity improvements. Coal decarbonisation potential via efficiency improvement is key to emission reductions in the power sector of India”, said Parth Kumar, Programme Manager – CSE.

Rajpura plant comprises two supercritical units, each with a capacity of 700 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 1,400 MW. Both the units were commissioned in 2014 and continue to operate efficiently. The CSE report commended the fact that despite operating both the units using domestic coal, the plant is able to maintain emission factors below 0.9 tonne/MWh.

The performance of Rajpura power plant reflects L&T’s overall focus on environmental responsibility and efficient resource utilisation. L&T has set a target to achieve water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040.
