5 FAMOUS GANPATI MANDAL U MUST VISIT

Thousands of Mumbaikars are gearing for the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi which begins in the first week of September. While the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi will begin on September 2 this year, citizens across the city are already getting the first glimpse of few of Mumbai’s most famous and popular Ganesh idols while they are being taken to their pandals from the workshops where they are created.

1) LALBAUG CHA RAJA:

On the first day of the festival, which was started by Lokmanya Tilak over 100 years ago, long queues were seen at Lalbaugcha Raja, Mumbai’s most famous Ganpati mandal in Central Mumbai, with devotees eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of Lord Ganesh. The about 20-feet high Ganapati idol at Lalbaug has been crafted in a traditional way and is installed in the pandal.

2) GSB MANDAL:

Hailed as the richest Ganpati of Mumbai—Gowd Saraswat Brahman (GSB) Wadala Seva Mandal, King Circle has been insured for over Rs 266 crore.Precious gold ornaments of 68 kgs and 350 kgs worth silver have already been offered to the Lord at the GSB pandal. Even today, the Ganpati at GSB King’s circle is prayed to as per South Indian rituals.One of the popular Ganpati pandals of Mumbai is Guru Ganesh Seva Mandal or GSB Mandal which sees crowds of devotees for 10 days.

3) GANESH GALLI OR MUMBAI CHA RAJA :

This is the oldest Ganesh pandal in Mumbai, completing 92 years. It has one of the biggest Ganesh idols in the city.Ganesh Galli Cha Raha is one of the oldest and one of the most renowned Ganpati pandals in Mumbai. The Ganesh Galli Cha Raja which is Ganesh Galli cha Raja also called as Mumbaicha Raja was founded in 1928. This year the pandal will celebrate its 92nd Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Ganesh Galli Cha Raja is located in Parel in Central Mumbai, just a few lanes away from the most popular pandal in Mumbai, the Lalbaug Cha Raja. Well known for its unique themes which are often a replica of popular temples of India, the Ganesh Galli Cha Raja is also one of the oldest Ganpati pandals in Lalbaug, Parel.

4) ANDHERI CHA RAJA:

Azad Nagar Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti was established in 1966. The Ganpati idol here came to be known as “Navasala Pavnara Ganpati” (wish fulfilling Ganesha) who was also later known as “Andhericha Raja” (King of Andheri) by Mumbai.

5) TEJUKAYA MITRA MANDAL, LALBAUG:

This year, the organisers have decided to do away with the Plaster of Paris (PoP) idol and instead prepared an idol which is eco-friendly. A 22 feet idol has been built is completely eco-friendly without any use of plastic or PoP.

LALBAUG CHA RAJA Is Back

Mumbai’s most famous Ganpati, LALBAUG CHA RAJA is back in his seat. Each year, the ‘wish-fulfilling’ deity attracts over two crore devotees—that’s like every single person in Mumbai, or Delhi showing up. In 2018, the iconic Ganesh mandal is celebrating its 85th year of existence. If you’re planning to pay a visit to seek his blessings, you’ll need plenty of time, patience and some super-supple hamstrings.Back in the 1900s, Lalbaug wasn’t as we know it today. In place of the bustling markets, the area was filled with over 130 cotton mills and was called Girangaon or the ‘village of mills’. In 1932, the market took a hit and the livelihood of all vendors and fishermen in the area was severely affected. It was at that time that they prayed to Lord Ganpati for the market to re-open and bless them at this hour of need. In a couple of months, they were granted a plot of land to build a market, which is the present day Lalbaug market.

As a token of their gratitude, in 1934, they established an idol of the lord dressed somewhat as a fisherman (the idol has had many variations since). In the years that followed, the power of Lalbaugcha Raja or Navsacha Ganpati (wish-fulfiller) has piqued the interest of people around the country from all walks of life.Mukh Darshan: Get in this queue if you’re okay with just a quick dekko of the idol from a distance, from a few metres away. The wait time can range from 6-7 hours. The Mukh Darshan starts 6am on 13 September and is open 24×7 all the way till midnight on visarjan day, i.e. 22 September.

Navas or Charan-sparsh darshan: The Lalbaugcha Raja ganpati is also known as Navasacha Ganpati, or the ‘wish-fulfilling Ganpati’. This queue is for devotees who’d like to touch the idol’s feet for blessings. Obviously more popular, wait times range from 12-15 hours. Charan-sparsh darshan starts 6am With over two crore devotees expected to visit Lalbaugcha Raja, there are strict security and crowd-management measures in place. This year, over 180 CCTV cameras have been installed on premises. Apart from police protection, 5,000 trained volunteers will be stationed across the pandal, 1000 of whom are women and 200 trained in firefighting by the Mumbai Fire Brigade. Even the rich and famous turn up for the Bappa’s blessings. Some of the regulars include the Bachchans—Senior performs an arati each year—the Ambanis, the Devgns, Sachin Tendulkar, Shankar Mahadevan , Kangana Ranaut and many more. Of course, they have their own VIP access, so it’s unlikely you’ll find them in the queue behind you.
