Region-wise disbursements showcased the scheme’s broad impact across India, with Rs 91.13 crore allocated to 2,366 projects in the Central Zone (Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand), Rs 62.68 crore to 2,167 projects in Eastern India (Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Northeast states), Rs 41.80 crore for 1,320 projects in Northern India (Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan), and Rs 24.12 crore for 496 projects in Western India (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa). Since its inception till FY 2024-25, PMEGP has established over 10 lakh micro enterprises with a sanctioned loan of Rs 73,348 crore and a margin money subsidy of Rs 27,166 crore, directly and indirectly creating employment for more than 90 million people, thus solidifying its role as a key driver of rural and urban entrepreneurship in India.

Chairman Kumar emphasized that the remarkable achievements of KVIC contribute significantly to the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 and to making India the third-largest economy in the world. The production of Khadi and Village Industry products increased from ₹26,109.07 crore in 2013-14 to ₹116,599.75 crore in 2024-25, illustrating a nearly fourfold increase. Similarly, the production of Khadi clothes saw a significant rise from ₹811.08 crore to ₹3,783.36 crore, marking a 366 percent increase. The sales of Khadi clothes rose from ₹1,081.04 crore to ₹7,145.61 crore, demonstrating a remarkable growth of 561 percent. This resurgence is largely attributed to the promotion of Khadi by Prime Minister Modi on larger platforms.

The key objective of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is to create maximum employment opportunities in rural areas, and recent data illustrates success in this regard as well. Cumulative employment rose from 1.30 crore in 2013-14 to 1.94 crore in 2024-25, reflecting a 49.23 percent increase. The business of Khadi and Village Industries Bhawan in New Delhi also flourished, doubling from ₹51.02 crore to ₹110.01 crore over the same period, with a 115 percent increase. Furthermore, since the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Program (PMEGP), a total of 1,018,185 units have been established with a margin money subsidy of ₹27,166.07 crore against loans totaling ₹73,348.39 crore, providing employment to over 9 million individuals through PMEGP programs.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission KVIC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding MoU with the Department of Posts. Under this MoU, the employees of the Postal Department will physically verify new units being set up across the Country under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme PMEGP. The KVIC will also train the employees for the physical verification process.

The MoU was signed by Postal Department’s Deputy General Manager Dr Amanpreet Singh and Deputy CEO of PMEGP Rajan Babu on behalf of KVIC.

There has been an unprecedented growth of 332 per cent in the sale of indigenous Khadi products made by artisans from 2013-14 to 2022-25. Among the different KVI products, there has been unmatched growth in the production of Khadi fabrics in the last 9 years, in 2013-14, the production of Khadi clothes was Rs 811 crore, with a jump of 260 per cent, it has touched the figure of Rs 2,916 crore in 2022-23. The demand for Khadi clothes has also increased rapidly from 2013-14 to 2022-23. In 2013-14, where its sales were only Rs 1,081.04 crore, the statement added that by 2022-23, it increased by 450 per cent to touch the figure of Rs 5,942.93 crore.

On the occasion, the Chairman released margin money grant of about Rs.25 crores to 237 beneficiaries of Western Zone under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) scheme. He congratulated KVIC officials and lakhs of Khadi artisans working in rural areas of country for achieving the historic turnover of Rs.1.34 lakh crores in the financial year 2022-23.

KVIC Chairman further added that under the leadership of Prime Minister  KVIC has taken the concept of “Vocal for Local” and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign to new heights. For the first time in the history of independent India, the turnover of KVIC products has crossed Rs.1.34 lakh crores, while 9,54,899 new employment opportunities also have been generated in rural areas. He further said that the ‘Khadi Yoga Mat’ launched today is a completely indigenous product prepared by the skills of Khadi artisans. He said we all have to be vocal for this new local product. And when we become ‘Vocal for Local’ for our products, then only our products will be able to reach the category of ‘Local to Global’.

KVIC Chairman, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena today instructed concerned agencies to scrutinize the applications under PMEGP and forward it to banks for disbursal of funds within 26 days. He also instructed bringing down this time frame to 15 days. It will be mandatory for implementing agencies to guide and hand-hold the applicants for formulation of proposals and assist them till sanction of loan. All agencies will follow-up with banks for early sanction of loans.

According to the revised guidelines, the Monitoring Cell at KVIC, Mumbai will monitor the application process on a daily basis while it will be giving feedback to the implementing agencies every fortnight. The progress report, thereafter, shall be placed for perusal of the CEO and Chairman of KVIC.

Shri Saxena said the revised guidelines come in wake of the Prime Minister’s appeal for encouraging local production. “As the Prime Minister has said, ‘self-dependence’ is the mantra. Easing out the process under PMEGP will further accelerate the growth of local manufacturing. This will ensure maximum employment generation within a short time frame,” Saxena said. He said the transformation of the Khadi and Village Industries from local to global was a case study for other local industries and enterprises. “As the nodal agency, KVIC is committed to hand-hold the upcoming projects under PMEGP,” he added.

To boost the local production, it has been decided that at least one unit each pertaining to manufacture of N95 masks, ventilators or its accessories, PPE Kits for medical staff, sanitizers/liquid hand wash, thermal scanner and agarbatti and soap will be set up in each district. This is in order to meet the growing demand due to prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country.

According to the revised guidelines, the implementing agencies, at the time of scrutiny, must ensure that the applicant has secured at least 60 marks out of 100 in the score card. Similarly, technical feasibility like availability of raw material, manpower, access to transport and electricity must be examined so as to reduce rejections at the bank level.

Similarly, the implementing agencies shall also examine the market study, assessment of demand of the proposed product, similar projects in the vicinity and the market strategy. The agencies will ensure that the proposal falls under the selected bank’s jurisdiction to avoid rejection on that ground..

Quite noticeably, each women artisan at Nagrota used to earn around Rs. 170 – Rs. 200 stitching 85-90 Khadi Rumals on an average working 4 hours per day. Now with revised wages, each woman will earn around Rs. 250 – Rs. 300 per day, thus increasing their income by around 50%. Since the launch on 17th December 2019, approximately 30,000 Khadi Rumals have been sold by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Nagrota a centre has been established by KVIC to provide employment to local women.

Highlighting this as a major step towards nation building, Chairman KVIC, Shri VK Saxena said, “Since the inception of this training center, the intention of KVIC has been to promote ‘Khadi Rumal’ and contribute meaningfully to the families of militancy affected areas of J&K. Currently the stitching center has a production capacity of 10,000 ‘Khadi Rumals’ per day stitched by 130 women artisans.”

Speaking about the initiative, Shri VK Saxena said, “‘Khadi Rumal’ is a symbol of trust that the women in militancy affected areas residing in Nagrota, have on the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Modi, who is working towards ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’. Currently we have been able to employ 130 women and as the sale of Khadi Rumal increases, we plan to reach out and empower 4000 women of this area.”
