With several cases of tomato flu being reported in children in Kerala, Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar has instructed authorities to keep a vigil on daily travellers from the state entering border districts like Mangaluru, Udupi, Kodagu, Chamrajnagara and Mysuru. Sudhakar also reiterated that there was no need to panic.

Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar on Wednesday said that there is no need to panic against the backdrop of an outbreak of Tomato Flu in neighbouring Kerala.

“Though some symptoms are similar to Covid-19, the Tomato Flu has nothing to do with Covid-19. These symptoms are usually seen in other types of viral infections also.

“There is no need to panic as the authorities have been asked to remain alert. Moreover, the Tomato Flu is endemic to Kerala,” he said.

According to a release by the Health Department, Tomato Flu is a rare viral disease, which causes red-coloured rashes, skin irritation and dehydration. The disease gets its name from the blisters it causes, which look like tomatoes.

Tomato fever is affecting children below the age of five in Kerala, it said, adding that the main symptoms include large blisters the size of tomatoes which are red in colour, as well as high fever, body ache, joint swelling, and fatigue – much like chikungunya.

Cases of Tomato Flu have currently been reported from Aryankavu, Anchal and Neduvathur in Kerala. Following this, contiguous Karnataka districts – Mangaluru, Udupi, Kodagu, Chamrajnagara and Mysuru – have been directed to keep a vigil on daily travellers from Kerala.

According to the Health Department, tt is also advised to monitor children for any of the aforementioned signs and symptoms in OPDs of health institutions. Further directions have been given to inform the state IDSP section immediately if any cases with such symptoms are detected.

DHOs of concerned districts and other districts too are directed by the Commissioner of Health to ensure surveillance is ensured, the statement said.

An Air India Express flight from Dubai carrying 190 people skidded off a tabletop runway in heavy rain and broke into pieces on Friday evening at Kozhikode airport in Kerala resulting Eighteen people, including both pilots, were killed after. The Boeing 737 overshot the runway at 7.41 PM and slid into a valley, said Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who has ordered an investigation.

The pilots, one of them a decorated former fighter pilot, had aborted two landings due to tailwind and had circled the airport several times before the final landing. The area had been slammed by torrential rains since Thursday.

“According to weather radar, the approach was for runway 28 but as the pilots faced difficulties, they went around twice and came from the opposite side on runway 10 and the plane crash-landed,” an investigator of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as saying.

The officer said the aircraft was at full speed while landing and continued to the edge of the runway and fell over in the valley.

The Air India Express flight IX-1344 from Dubai to Calicut was operating under the Vande Bharat Mission to repatriate Indians stranded abroad because of coronavirus lockdowns. The Air India Express, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, has only B-737 aircraft in its fleet.

There were 184 passengers on the plane, including 10 babies and 4 cabin crew members. Many passengers were workers returning home after losing their jobs due to the pandemic.

A worse tragedy was averted because the plane did not catch fire after the crash. In the heavy downpour, rescue personnel, including local policemen, pulled out people from the debris and jagged pieces of the plane’s fuselage scattered on a slope. Little children, wailing in fear, were found trapped under seats.

Investigating officers from the DGCA, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the CEO of Air India express and other officials of Air India and Air India Express were flown to Kozhikode early today to inquire into what happened. An aircraft from Mumbai also took “Angels of Air India” — grief counsellors — and other employees to coordinate relief and assistance.

A man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of a pregnant elephant in Kerala, the state Forest Minister said today. This is the first arrest in the case that has sparked massive outrage. The arrest comes a day after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that three suspects had been identified.

“The arrested man is a rubber tapper. A search is on for others,” Palakkad district police chief G Siva Vikram Said.

The man, who is in his forties, allegedly handled explosives and also assisted others, according to Chief Wildlife Warden Surendra Kumar.

Meanwhile A lawyer from Kerala’s Malappuram has filed a police complaint against BJP leader Maneka Gandhi and others for allegedly indulging in a hate campaign against the district and its residents over the death of the pregnant elephant.

Subhash Chandran, an advocate from Malappuram, filed the complaint with the district’s superintendent of police on Thursday seeking the registration of a first information report (FIR) against former Union minister Maneka Gandhi and others.

Chandran alleged that the campaign against the district was very derogatory and with a malafide intent .The lawyer alleged that Maneka Gandhi made false and frivolous allegations against the district of Malappuram and its residents, it added.

The wild elephant strayed into a village near Silent Valley National Park in Palakkad last month and is suspected to have eaten something with firecrackers stuffed in it. It exploded in the elephant’s mouth. The animal walked for days in agony before it went into a river and died standing on May 27.

Villagers in the region often use firecrackers or explosives stuffed in food – fruit or animal fat – to protect their fields from wild animals like boar. The horrific practice has been widely condemned.

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli was among several sportspersons who took to social media to express shock over the inhuman incident where a pregnant elephant was fed pineapple stuffed with firecrackers in Kerala.

The brutal incident of animal abuse took place in Kerala’s Palakkad district, which resulted in the death of the elephant while standing in the river.

“Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let’s treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts,” Kohli said in a tweet from his Twitter handle.

Meanwhile animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as she questioned his silence over the issue.

The pachyderm in Kerala’s Silent Valley Forest fell victim to an act of human cruelty after the pineapple offered by a man exploded in her mouth when she chomped on it, a senior forest officer said. Her jaw was broken and she was unable to eat after she chewed the pineapple and it exploded in her mouth.

Officer Surendrakumar said the elephant died at Velliyar River in Malappuram district on May 27. He said the post-mortem revealed that the pachyderm was pregnant.

“Rahul Gandhi is from that area, why has he not taken action?” questioned Maneka Gandhi on Wednesday.

The Congress scion represents the constituency of Wayanad, which is adjoining the district of Malappuram.
Demanding the removal of the state forest secretary and the resignation of the forest minister, Maneka targeted the state government over the incident. “It’s a murder. Malappuram is famous for such incidents. It’s India’s most violent district.”

South actors like Rashmika Mandanna, Tamannaah Bhatia, and singer Chinmayi Sripada took to their social media handles to condemn the horrific act involving a 15-year-old elephant in Kerala who was reportedly pregnant.

Bollywood actors including Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, John Abraham, Dia Mirza, Shraddha Kapoor and Disha Patani on Wednesday condemned the inhuman treatment meted out to pregnant elephant in Kerala.
.
Expressing shock over the tragic incident, the actors took to social media platforms and demanded stricter laws against animal cruelty.

Akshay Kumar put out the heart-wrenching picture of the dead body of the mother elephant, tied in strings after being pulled out from the water

The Union government on Wednesday released a list of hotspot zones in the country, including 170 districts classified as red zones.

Of this, 123 districts have been classified as ones that have a large outbreak, while 47 districts have COVID-19 clusters. A total of 207 districts have been classified as non hot-spots.

In the south there have been 11 districts in Andhra Pradesh, three in Karnataka, six in Kerala, 22 in Tamil Nadu and eight in Telangana identified as ‘red’ zones with large outbreaks.

Hotspots in the south with large outbreaks

Andhra Pradesh: Kurnool, Guntur, Spsr Nellore, Prakasam, Krishna, YSR, West Godavari, Chittoor, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Anantapur

Karnataka: Bengaluru Urban, Mysuru, Belagavi

Kerala: Kasaragod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta

Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Erode, Vellore, Dindugal, Villupuram, Tiruppur, Theni, Nammakal, Chengalpattu, Madurai, Tuticorin, Karur, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari, Cuddalore, Thiruvallur, Thiruvarur, Salem, Nagapattinam

Telangana: Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Warangal Urban, Ranga Reddy, Jogulamba Gadwal, Medchal Malkajgiri, Karimnagar, Nirmal

Hotspots in the south identified as clusters

Karnataka: Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Bagalkote, Dharwad

Kerala: Wayanad

Telangana: Nalgonda

How districts have been classified

Hotspots were earlier defined by the Union Health ministry to be those districts which have either reported large numbers of people falling sick with COVID-19 or where there has been a steady increase in the number of individuals infected with the disease.

As per the notice signed by Preeti Sudan, Health Secretary of India, districts are now classified as either hotspots or ‘red’ zones, non-hotspot districts, and non-infected or ‘green’ zones.

Hotspots districts are further divided into districts with large outbreaks and those with clusters.
Non-hotspot districts which have reported cases are referred to as clusters.

If a red zone hasn’t reported a new positive case in 14 days it will be shifted to hotspot ‘orange’ zone. If no further cases are reported for another 14 days, the district is then declared a ‘green’ zone
