Chidambaram has been told by the court not to travel abroad or attempt to get back his passport, which is now with the authorities. He has been asked to appear before the agencies when requested, and send a bond worth Rs 2 lakh.

According to reports, Chidambaram reiterated in court that others named in the case have either not been arrested or had received bail. 

In October, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). However, the Congress leader continued to be in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which too had filed a money-laundering case on the case.

The CBI had opposed his bail plea alleging that Chidambaram was a ‘flight risk’ and had tried to “pressurise and influence” key witnesses.

The 74-year-old leader was arrested on August 21 by the CBI from his Jor Bagh residence in Delhi. Following 15 days of CBI custody, he was sent to Tihar Jail on September 5. In October, he was sent to the ED’s custody in the INX Media case.

In the same month, the CBI finally filed a chargesheet after first registering a case in 2017, charging P Chidambaram and his son Karti P Chidambaram along with other government officials. The chargesheet reportedly stated that Indrani Mukerjea allegedly paid a bribe of USD 5 million to the father-son duo through offshore payments. Indrani and Peter, directors of INX Media Private Limited, had reportedly received foreign investment of Rs 403.07 crore against approved foreign direct investment (FDI) of Rs 4.62 crore.

The gesture by two of the Congress’s top leaders signaled the party’s stand that it would back its leaders all the way against what it calls politically-driven targeting.

Mr Chidambaram appreciated the visit in his tweets. “I am honoured that Sonia Gandhi and Dr.  Manmohan Singh called on me today. As long as the party is strong and brave, I will also be strong and brave,” his family tweeted on his behalf. Mr Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram, who also went with the Congress leaders, said Sonia Gandhi had given “immense support” to his father and he and Dr Singh had a “long discussion about the state of the economy”. Last week, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel had met Mr Chidambaram.

Mr Chidambaram is accused of facilitating in 2007, as the country’s finance minister, a huge infusion of foreign funds into the company INX Media. Karti Chidambaram is accused of receiving kickbacks for facilitating the process.

The Chidambarams were named by INX co-founders Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who are in jail in Mumbai in connection with the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora.

Mr Chidambaram, who celebrated his 74th birthday on Monday, “is in good health”. The former union minister has kept his Twitter timeline active from jail, targeting the government on various subjects including the economy.

This morning, he also tweeted on the grand “Howdy, Modi” event on Sunday at Houston, Texas, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump addressed a giant crowd of Indian Americans.

Mr Chidambaram picked on PM Modi’s comment, “If you ask me ‘Howdy, Modi‘, I’ll say – Bharat mein sab  achha hai (everything is great in India)”.”

The former Union Minister responded: “Bharat mai sab achha hai. Except for unemployment, loss of existing jobs, lower wages, mob violence, lockdown in Kashmir and throwing Opposition leaders in prison.”

Earlier Sunday, Mr Chidambaram had also directed a jibe at the CBI for arguing in court that he was a flight risk. “I am thrilled to discover that according to some people, I will grow golden wings and fly away to the moon. I hope I will have a safe landing,” his family posted on his behalf.

Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar rejected Mr. Chidambaram’s plea to release him on expiry of his police custody. The court allowed him to carry his medicines to the jail.Considering that he has Z-security, the court directed that he be kept in a separate cell.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that there will be adequate security for Mr. Chidambaram in the jail. Chidambaram in Tihar’s Jail No. 7: Separate cell but no special facilities.

Mr. Chidambaram’s 15-day CBI custody, ordered by the special court in five spells that started after his arrest on August 21 night, ended today. He also moved an application in court to surrender in the money laundering case connected with the INX Media case. The court is due to hear it on September 12.

“Anticipatory bail has to be exercised sparingly in cases of economic offences. Considering the facts and circumstances, this is not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail,” the Supreme Court said, in a huge blow to Mr Chidambaram, who has spent 15 days in CBI custody.

The Enforcement Directorate has accused Mr Chidambaram of money-laundering in the case involving INX Media, which is being investigated by the CBI. The CBI accuses Mr Chidambaram of misusing his place as Finance Minister of the country in 2007 while facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds in INX Media at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram.

The allegations against Mr Chidambaram and his son are based on the information from INX Media co-founders Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea, who are now jailed in Mumbai in connection with the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora. Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks for his role in securing the foreign funds, was arrested in 2018 and released after 23 days.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had extended Mr Chidambaram’s CBI custody for two days after his lawyer said the 74-year-old leader should not be sent to Tihar jail, where arrested persons are taken when they do not get bail after police custody expires. Mr Chidambaram’s petition challenging a non-bailable warrant against him  and his ask for pre-arrest bail in the Aircel-Maxis case will also come up during the day.

The Rs. 3,500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal involves a clearance of $800 million foreign investment to the company in 2006, allegedly in exchange of kickbacks. While the approval was expected to come from a committee headed by the Prime Minister, it came illegally from the finance ministry, the CBI said.

In CBI custody, Mr Chidambaram has been put up in a room on the ground floor of the agency’s headquarters in Delhi. If he is sent to judicial custody, he will be taken to Tihar, Asia’s largest prison facility, where he will be treated like other prisoners.

“You can’t humiliate people like this,”Mr Sibal argued, wondering what would happen if the trial court rejected the request and sent him to jail.

The court said house arrest was an option only for political prisoners. The judges, R Banumathi and AS Bopanna, also questioned why Mr Chidambaram was not making the request before the special CBI court, which has to decide on his custody.

The CBI, which is investigating allegations against Mr Chidambaram in the INX Media case, said it was the special CBI court which has to decide on where the Congress leader should be held. The agency insisted that he should be granted no protection.
