October 07 2025, Bengaluru: Karnataka, as the first state in India to make sudden heart attack deaths “notifiable,” is in a unique position to study critical data and shed light on what’s causing heart disease in young Indians. The early results are alarming but unsurprising.

Research and observations from Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has revealed new risk factors in young patients, including abnormal lipoproteins, insulin resistance, and elevated homocysteine levels. This indicates that lifestyle habits such as unhealthy diets high in fats and carbohydrates, sugary beverages, smoking, and sedentary routines are major contributors.

For Bengaluru’s tech-driven workforce, these findings carry particular significance. The city’s fast-paced work culture, long hours, and high-stress environment create a perfect storm for cardiovascular risk, especially when combined with easy availability of processed foods.

“Karnataka’s groundbreaking data on abnormal lipoproteins and insulin resistance in young patients gives us a roadmap for prevention,” says Dr. Vanita Rahman, a lifestyle medicine physician with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). “Plant-based diets specifically target these biomarkers. We consistently see reductions in LDL cholesterol and significant improvements in insulin sensitivity within weeks. For the young professionals showing up in Karnataka’s cardiac disease statistics, shifting to diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes isn’t just healthier, it’s a targeted intervention against the exact factors this state is now tracking.”

The convenience factor compounds the problem. A recent PCRM survey found that 89% of Bengaluru residents had tried losing weight at least once, but only 27% maintained long-term success. When asked about the biggest barrier to weight loss, 46% pointed to the availability of unhealthy food, which is “too convenient and affordable.”

A landmark 15-year study following 123,330 women demonstrates plant-based protection potential. Women who most closely followed plant-focused eating patterns were 11% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease overall, 14% less likely to develop coronary heart disease, and 17% less likely to develop heart failure.

As Karnataka continues collecting this vital data, the message for Bengaluru is clear: the state’s innovative tracking system has identified the problem – now the solution lies in addressing lifestyle factors driving premature heart disease through evidence-based dietary intervention.

Karnataka Elections 2023: The Congress had promised that upon coming to power, it would provide 200 units of free power to light the homes in the state. Now it has come to power and is all ready to light the houses of all Kannaḍigarus. The KERC cost per unit of electricity is ₹9.12 per unit means, the electricity of Rs 1824 will be free for the next five years till the Congress government is in power.

Well for the Indian electorate, electricity has always been important– in terms of access, reliability & cost. It is always one of the subjects to pull the electorate towards the party promising free power to come to POWER.

The freebies culture just ahead of elections was started by late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa. It was during her tenure that the freebie culture started with promises of free sarees, pressure cookers, television, and more. Nationwide political parties quickly adopted this, while free electricity units as a promise was started from Delhi, with Aam Aadmi Party founder Arvind Kejriwal promising free power (to certain units), free water, bus travel, and more to win the elections in 2015.

Now with several assembly elections scheduled this year, political parties are promising free power. But, we are oversubsidizing in most states, and doing it inefficiently. Offering free or subsidized electricity to ‘vote banks’ achieves the short-term goal of winning elections. In the long term, it erodes the financial viability of the electricity distribution sector. This is not a problem of DISCOM inefficiency but rather a problem of political expediency. Consumers in Delhi enjoy free electricity up to 200 units a month, which means several citizens get zero monthly bills. In Tamil Nadu, users get up to 100 units of free electricity consumption.

If an elected government wants to keep a poll promise of reduced or free electricity, it has to compensate the power distribution company for the difference. State governments either subsidize or take over the debt of Discoms. A case in point is the Ujjwal Discom Assurance Yojna (UDAY) scheme when state governments floated bonds to retire the debt of #DISCOMS

But what really happens in the majority of the cases is that power distribution companies incur massive losses. Discoms owed a total of Rs 1,15,904 crore to power generation firms in January 2021, according to portal PRAAPTI (Payment Ratification And Analysis in Power Procurement for bringing Transparency in Invoicing of Generators). In January 2022, the total overdue amount, which was not cleared even after 45 days of a grace period offered by generators, stood at Rs 1,01,357 crore as against Rs 99,650 crore in the same month a year ago. The overdue amount stood at Rs 99,981 crore in December 2021. Discoms in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu account for the major portion of dues to gencos, the data showed.

The manifesto announcements favored political parties with accumulated losses of 30 DISCOMS spread across 9 states accounting for over 60% of power demand are estimated at Rs 700 billion, for 2022 shows data from Crisil. India boasts that 40% of its power capacity is now based on renewables. But competition between political parties in election pledges has resulted in more and more states providing free electricity to domestic consumers. This subsidizes rather than taxes carbon.

Political parties in a sheer desperate attempt to regain lost national relevance, are choosing to follow in the footsteps of the Aam Aadmi Party and pledged free units of free energy to secure public loyalty and obedience prior to the election. In the recent elections in Karnataka where Congress came to power, it promised 200 units of free energy through its statewide campaign to brighten every house with
light calling the scheme ‘Gruha Jyothi Yojane’.

Political competition in freebies has already made agricultural power free in most states. Domestic power is going the same way. This undercuts the government’s green commitments. #power #india

quarantine team of health workers and policemen was targeted last evening in west Bengaluru by a large mob of about 200 locals when the officials reached a neighbourhood to take 58 people who were believed to have come in contact with three coronavirus patients. They were forced to retreat leaving behind 33 people who had to be taken to the isolation units.

A ward in West Bengaluru’s Padarayanapura locality was sealed last week after three people, who had attended a congregation in Delhi’s Nizammudin in March, tested positive for coronavirus. The congregation held by Tablighi Jamaat has set off the largest cluster of COVID-19 cases in India; more than 4,000 cases across the country have been linked to the congregation so far.

As the team reached the neighbourhood at around 7 pm, angry locals started removing tin sheets that were erected as barricades to mark the sealed area.

In videos shot on mobile phones, the locals are seen damaging tents installed for healthcare workers and policemen.

Fifty-four people have been arrested over the incident so far, including those who had to be taken to isolation units. Among those arrested is a woman who is believed to have instigated the group of locals.
“No healthcare worker was attacked… only some damage to the property has been reported. The locals were demanding on-the-spot testing,” senior police officer B Ramesh said. It took a few hours for the officials concerned to bring the situation under control.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi condemned the attack in a tweet

Several attacks have been reported in the past few weeks against the health workers and those in the frontline in the fight against coronavirus.

Last week, a group of sanitation worker in Madhya Pradesh were attacked by a mob of locals in Dewas district when they went to a neighbourhood to clean the streets. In Bihar, four such cases of attack on health workers were reported across the state within 24 hours on Thursday.

Across India, more than 17,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported, more than 500 people have died
