BJP’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan was sworn in as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh today, days after the Congress government of Kamal Nath fell after losing its majority.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan took oath for the fourth time as Chief Minister.

Kamal Nath resigned on Thursday just before the Supreme Court’s deadline to prove his majority in a trust vote.

The Congress lost its majority after 22 MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia took a flight to Bengaluru and resigned

The MLAs joined BJP yesterday, tweeted Mr Scindia, who quit his party of 18 years and joined the BJP last week.

The Congress tried to reach out to the rebel MLAs but failed to win any of them back. Rejecting their appeal for more time, the Supreme Court said the uncertainty in Madhya Pradesh must end and ordered a test of strength last Thursday.

Kamal Nath, who came to power in December 2018, resigned before the deadline, knowing it would be impossible for him to make up the numbers needed to stay in power.

Announcing his resignation on Friday, Madhya Pradesh chief minister KAMAL NATH said he will continue to fight aginst BJP.

After weeks of political drama in Madhya Pradesh which went from senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia joining the BJP, the Grand Old Party’s government in the state has collapsed.

Kamal Nath listed out the several projects done under the Congress administration. He followed it up with,”The BJP could not tolerate this”.

Nath further said that Indians can see the truth behind the incident where MLAs are being held hostage in Bengaluru. “The truth will come out. People will not forgive them,” he said.

Kamal Nath alleged the BJP had continuously plotted against the Congress government. “Every 15 days, a BJP leader would make a remark, saying this government is here only for a few months and won’t last long.

They also held hostage our 22 MLAs in Karnataka. They have spent crores of rupees by luring our 22 MLAs to the BJP camp. The BJP has planned this to kill democracy. The people of Madhya Pradesh will never forgive them,” he said.

Accusing the BJP of not being able to handle the work done by the Congress administration in Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath said, “I had been given five years to develop the state, five years to make Madhya Pradesh to be counted among one of the big states.”

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Sharad Kumar resigned on Friday hours ahead of the impending floor-test in Madhya Pradesh. The Speaker of the Assembly, NP Prajapati, accepted the BJP MLAs resignation this morning.

The BJP in Madhya Pradesh will seek a floor test on March 16 in the wake of 22 Congress MLAs resigning the state, a senior BJP leader said on Thursday. The 14-month-old Kamal Nath-led government has been facing deep crisis following the resignation of 22 Congress MLAs after former Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the party on Tuesday.

“Since the government is in minority, we are going to request the governor and the Assembly speaker for a floor test on March 16 when the state budget session begins,” BJP’s chief whip in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Narottam Mishra told reporters. As the Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon arrives in Bhopal today from his Holi vacation, a BJP delegation led by former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan is set to meet him.

Posters welcoming BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia have been removed by the city’s municipal corporation after miscreants tore them last night. A day after joining BJP, Scindia is set to return to Bhopal today and a grand welcome has been planned for the former Congress leader, said sources.

The governor and the speaker have the resignations of 22 MLAs. Now it is up to them to take a call, he said.

“This government has lost majority,” senior BJP leader former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said here.

The Congress has a wafer thin majority in the 228- member Assembly. Before the rebellion, its tally was 114. It also has the support of four Independents, two BSP MLAs and one from the SP, but some may now switch sides to the BJP.

If the resignations of the 22 MLAs are accepted, the strength of the Assembly will fall to 206.

The Congress, on its own, will then be left with 92 seats, while the BJP has 107 seats with the magic number for a majority being 104.

The 15-month-old Congress government in Madhya Pradesh led by Kamal Nath has been pushed to the brink with the party alleging that the BJP has confined a few of its MLAs at five-star hotel in Gurgaon near Delhi.
In dramatic developments overnight, top Congress leaders from the state were seen escorting one of the MLAs out of the hotel with her bags. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh says four MLAs are still inside the hotel.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said Ramabai, a suspended MLA from Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), managed to leave the ITC Grand Bharat in Manesar in Gurgaon. At around 2 am, Madhya Pradesh ministers and Congress leaders Jitu Patwari and Jaivardhan Singh who is Digvijaya Singh’s son, were seen coming out of the hotel in Gurgaon’s Manesar along with Ms Ramabai.
“People with whom our contact was established were ready to come back to us. We were able to get in touch with Bisahulal Singh (Congress MLA) and Ramabai. Ramabai came back, even when the BJP tried to stop her,” Mr Singh told early this morning.

The four who are reportedly still inside the hotel are Congress’s Hardeep Dang, Raghuraj Kansana and Bisahulal Singh and Independent MLA Shera Bhaiya. There are reports that the four may be moved to Chikmagalur in BJP-ruled Karnataka.

Six others who the Congress says it managed to rescue from the hotel are currently at another hotel in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. They include suspended BSP MLA Ramabai, Congress’s Sanjiv Singh, Ranvir Jatav, Rajvardhan Dattigaon, Kamlesh Jatav and Rajesh Shukla (Samajwadi Party). Digvijaya Singh had alleged that the BJP was trying to bribe MLAs of his party by “offering Rs 25-35 crore”. “The BJP’s Rampal Singh, Narottam Mishra, Arvind Bhadauria, Sanjay Pathak were going to give them money. Had there been a raid, they would have been caught… We think 10 to 11 MLAs were there, only four are still with them now, they will also come back to us,” Mr Singh said today.
