Bangalore, 21 November: Johns Hopkins University (JHU) today signed an MoU with Ajit Isaac Foundation (AIF) to provide assistance in setting up and launching palliative care centers in India. These centres will provide compassionate, dignified care to terminally ill patients in underserved regions in India, along with training and supporting community-based caregivers.

Of an estimated 8-10 million Indians who need palliative care, only 1-2% have access to it, which is significantly lower than the global average of 14%. With most palliative care centres being concentrated in urban locations, India faces a healthcare access equity issue, especially in rural areas where services are scarce. This collaboration seeks to address these disparities by expanding access to high-quality end-of-life care in underserved regions, enabling terminally ill patients to experience comfort and peace in their final stages of life.

AIF is establishing a 63-bed Palliative Care Centre in Tumkur, set to launch in early 2025. This Centre will serve as the foundation for the JHU-AIF collaboration, which aims to design and implement comprehensive training programs in palliative care, offered both online and offline, with continued mentorship support for staff. JHU will help in developing a research fellowship and designing curriculum. Additionally, AIF and JHU will jointly host workshops and conferences, both in India and internationally, to showcase the latest advancements in palliative care, fostering knowledge exchange and the adoption of best practices.

Commenting on the collaboration, Ronald J. Daniels, President, JHU said, “We are delighted to partner with AIF and are committed to bridging the healthcare divide, ensuring compassionate and dignified care for all. With colleagues in India, we will use evidence-based approaches to help healthcare providers and caregivers improve quality of life for terminally ill patients, regardless of geography or circumstances.”

More than 2.33 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 159,818 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

The US wants to send a team of experts to China to investigate coronavirus, President Donald Trump has said, a day after he warned Beijing of “consequences” if it was knowingly responsible for the spread of Covid-19 which has killed more than 165,000 people globally, including over 41,000 in America. Describing the coronavirus as a plague, Trump, during his White House news conference on Sunday, said that he is not happy with China where the pandemic emerged in December last year in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.
China’s new confirmed coronavirus cases dropped to 12 with eight of them reported from Chinese nationals coming from abroad, taking the total tally to 82,747, health officials said on Monday. The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 82,747 by Sunday, including 4,632 people died of the disease, 1,031 patients still being treated and 77,084 others who had been discharged after recovery.

Peru reported over 15,000 cases of coronavirus on Sunday, the second-highest tally in Latin America, as the disease continues to ravage the economy of the world’s No. 2 copper producer. Peru recorded its first coronavirus case on March 6 and took 25 days to reach 1,000 cases. It took only 14 more days to reach 10,000 cases on April 14, according to a Reuters tally. Peru has reported a total of 15,628 cases and 400 deaths, the health ministry said.

Across the globe, around 10,000 coronavirus deaths were reported across the world over 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 1.36 lakh, according to latest data from Johns Hopkins University. Globally, the total number of coronavirus cases has crossed 20 lakh. The US is the worst affected country with over 6.3 lakh cases and over 30,000 fatalities.

Spain (1.8 lakh cases), Italy (1.65 lakh cases), Germany (1.34 lakh cases) and France (1.34 lakh cases) are among the other worst affected countries.

The death toll in India from COVID-19 has risen to 308 while 856 patients have been cured of the virus or discharged.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Sunday said that it has conducted a total of 1,95,748 tests for coronavirus. Over last five days, an average of 15,747 samples were tested per day and the average number of samples which tested positive is 584, the apex health research body said.

Across the world, the fatalities from corornavirus has risen to 1.14 lakh, while number of confirmed cases has surged to 18.4 lakh, according to latest data from Johns Hopkins University.

With over 5.56 lakh cases, the US has been the worst affected country, followed by Spain (1.66 lakh), Italy (1.56 lakh), France (1.33 lakh) and Germany (1.27 lakh).

In US, the death toll has crossed 22,000, followed by Italy (19,899), Spain (17,209), France (14,393) and UK (10,612)

“A quarantine will not be necessary,” Trump tweeted, some eight hours after he stunned the New York metropolitan region, the epicenter of the US coronavirus outbreak, with a proposal to place it under quarantine to prevent residents from leaving.

Trump had indicated earlier he was responding to worries in other states, particularly Florida, that travelers from the greater New York city area could spread COVID-19 in their communities.

He told reporters that “heavily infected” New Yorkers were a threat to Florida, a popular southern holiday destination for people in the northeast.

New York state has reported more than 53,000 cases of the new coronavirus, out of more than 122,000 nationwide.

New York city alone reported a surge of 155 deaths Saturday, taking the city’s total to 617, more than one-quarter of the 2,147 across the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Neighboring New Jersey has reported over 11,100 COVID-19 cases.

A lockdown on the area like the one Trump was weighing would have been the harshest measure yet taken by the US government to slow the spread of the disease.

Cuomo told earlier that a lockdown on travel in and out of the global financial and trade hub would not be legal or make sense — especially since there are already local controls on movements.

“Why you would want to just create total pandemonium on top of a pandemic, I have no idea,” he said.

“New York city, New Jersey and southern Connecticut is the global capital of the world for commerce and for finance,” said Lamont.

“If you care as much as the president does about getting this economy going again, you’ve got to be very careful about what you say and what you don’t say.”

Yet Trump appeared to be echoing concerns in other states that visiting New Yorkers could exacerbate the spread of coronavirus.

In Rhode Island, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) northeast of New York city, police and national guard were knocking on doors of homes where cars had New York license plates to remind them of a requirement to self-quarantine.

Florida has a large population of retirees, but has so far only reported slightly more than 4,000 coronavirus cases.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a political ally of Trump, issued executive orders this week mandating two-week self-quarantines for anyone arriving or recently arrived from New York and Louisiana, another US hotbed of the disease.
