Addressing the JNU students and the youth of the country, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his views on harms of prioritizing ideology over national interest. He said this is one thing that has done great harm to the democratic system of our country. “Because my ideology says this, so in matters of national interest, I will think in the same framework, I will work on the same parameter, this is wrong”, said Shri Modi. It is natural to be proud of one’s ideology still, on the subjects of national interest, our ideology should be seen standing with the nation not against it, he stressed.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled a statue of Swami Vivekananda in JNU Campus, New Delhi today through video conferencing. Union Minister of Education Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Vice-Chancellor, JNU, Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar also participated in the event

Prime Minister told the students that in the history of the country, whenever a difficult time arose before the country, people of every ideology came together in the national interest. People of every ideology stood united under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom struggle. They fought for the country together. The country saw the same solidarity during the Emergency. Former Congress leaders and activists were also present in the movement against the Emergency. There were RSS volunteers and Jana Sangh people. Socialists and communists too came together.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that in this solidarity, no one had to compromise on ideology. There was only one purpose – national interest. Therefore, whenever there is a question of national unity, integrity and national interest, taking decisions under the burden of any ideology will lead to the loss for the nation.

Prime Minister made it clear that idea-sharing and the flow of new ideas need to be kept uninterrupted. Our country is the land where seeds of different intellectual ideas have sprouted and thrived. It is necessary for the youth to strengthen this tradition. Due to this tradition, India is the most vibrant democracy in the world, Shri Modi said.

Prime Minister put forward the framework of the reform agenda of his government before the students. He added the idea of AtmaNirbhar Bharat has become the collective consciousness of more than 130 crore Indians, has become part of our aspirations. Continuing about the Reforms in India, the Prime Minister urged JNU students to ponder on how the notion of Good Reforms as bad politics changed to good reforms as good politics. He said today, behind the reforms, there is a resolve to make India better in every way. He added intention and determination underlying the Reforms happening today are sincere. He said before ongoing reforms, a safety net is being created and trust is the basis of this safety.

Prime Minister said for a long time the poor were kept in slogans only and there was no attempt to connect the poor of the country with the system. He said the poor were the most neglected, most unconnected and most financially excluded person earlier. He added now the poor are getting their own pucca house, toilet, electricity, gas, clean drinking water, digital banking, affordable mobile connectivity and fast internet connection. This is the safety-net woven around the poor, which is necessary for the flight of his aspirations. Similarly, through better irrigation infrastructure, modernization of mandis, E-Nam, soil health cards, availability of urea better MSP a safety network was created around the farmers. The government first worked for their needs, now it is working for their aspiration.

A team of researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has developed new drug molecules against the protozoa that causes amoebiasis.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Entamoeba histolytica is the third-leading cause of morbidity and mortality due to parasitic disease in humans. It causes amoebiasis or amoebic dysentery, which is highly prevalent in developing countries. A team of researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has developed new drug molecules against the protozoa that causes amoebiasis.

This protozoan is anaerobic or micro-aerophilic in nature such that it cannot survive high concentrations of oxygen. However, during infection, it faces a high surge of oxygen inside the human body. The organism synthesizes large amounts of cysteine to counter oxidative stress.

This pathogen deploys cysteine as one of the essential molecules in its defence mechanism against high oxygen levels. Entamoeba expresses two crucial enzymes for synthesizing cysteine. Researchers from JNU has characterized and determined the molecular structures of both these crucial enzymes. “We have also successfully screened for potent inhibitors for one of the enzymes, O-acetyl L-serine sulfhydrylase (OASS). Some of these inhibitors can check the growth of this organism with high efficacy,” said Prof. Samudrala Gourinath, lead researcher, School of Life Sciences, JNU, while speaking with India Science Wire.

“Cysteine biosynthesis is crucial for the survival of E. histolytica and may be similar protozoan parasites. These can be targeted by inhibiting their pathways, which we have successfully done. The identified molecules can be lead to the development of drug molecules” said Dr Gourinath.

The research team includes Sudhaker Dharavath, Ramachandran Vijayan, Khushboo Kumari, and Priya Tomar. The study has been published in the journal European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Fresh incidents of stone pelting were reported in Delhi’s Maujpur and Brahmpuri today morning, even as the death toll from Monday’s violence rose to seven. A head constable was among the people killed and at least 50 others, including several paramilitary and Delhi Police personnel, were injured on Monday as violence flared up once again over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Northeast Delhi.

Intense violence after protesters for and against the controversial citizenship law clashed and threw stones at each other, set vehicles and shops on fire. Five people, including a cop, were killed and nearly 100 were injured in Delhi. Around 20 police personnel were injured and have been hospitalised. Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a late-night meeting with the Delhi police chief, the Union Home Secretary and other senior officials.

Three firefighters have been injured after a group of people set a fire engine ablaze and threw stones at another. The violence began on Monday hours before United States President Donald Trump, was expected in the capital. Mr Trump is expected to spend the day in Delhi for the operative part of his state visit.

Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal has called an urgent meeting of MLAs and officials from the violence-hit areas. He tweeted, “I am very worried about the prevailing situation in certain parts of Delhi. All of us together should make all efforts to restore peace in our city. I again urge everyone to shun violence.”

Delhi ministers Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain and other Aam Aadmi Party MLAs camped outside Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s residence late last night to discuss with him the law and order situation. Mr Baijal said he had “instructed Delhi Police to ensure law and order is maintained”.

The Delhi government has ordered all private and government schools to be closed in the northeast Delhi district to remain closed today in the wake of the violence. Large gatherings have been banned in northeast Delhi under Section 144. They have also been imposed outside Delhi Police Headquarters after calls for protest marches by the JNU Students Union. Delhi Metro has closed the Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar stations

Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone who visited Jawaharlal Nehru University show her solidarity with the students said she could not resist even she knew consequences .Meanwhile right wing supporters started hastag boycott CHHAPAAK which is due to release on Friday .

The Actor attended meeting had been organised by the JNU students’ union and the teachers’ association against the attack on students by masked men and women armed with lathis and iron rods on Sunday which resulted in more than twenty people getting injured and hospitalised.

Deepika, however, did not address the crowd. She stood by as former JNUSU president, Kanhaiya Kumar raised slogans and left just as current President Aishe Ghosh, who too was injured in the attack, began to speak.

Soon after news of Deepika making an appearance at JNU broke, social media was split into two sections.

On one hand, people lauded the actor for having taken a strong stance and condemning the attack on students.

Last month, when protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act resulted in violent clashes between the students at Jamia Milia Islamia and Delhi Police, most of Bollywood stood as mute spectators until they were practically coaxed to speak up.

This time around nevertheless, Bollywood has seen support pouring in from all corners as stars took to the streets to voice their dissent. In Mumbai, celebrities such as Anurag Kashyap, Swara Bhasker, Shweta Tripathi, Vishal Bharadwaj, Vishal Dadlani among others joined the protests at Carter Road.

Many have argued that Deepika would never have turned up at JNU had she not been in Delhi for Chhapaak promotions. Some even claimed that her appearance was a mere publicity stunt. But, even if that’s true, why is that a problem?
.
In the past few hours, Deepika has seen the very worst hatred on social media. “Anti-national”, “Urban Naxal”, “Pakistani” – these are just some of the things she’s been called.

गोपाल सिंह राजपुरोहित@Gopalrajdoli

I never imagined that actress like Deepika Padukone will support These JNU Goons and Afzal

Now Deepika shows True colour

This is my final decision that I will never watch any Film of these actress who Support anti nationalist goons #boycottchhapaak

Hindu Raksha Dal, a far-Right group, has claimed responsibility for the brutal assault on teachers and students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) by a masked mob on January 5.

In another video posted on Twitter, the outfit’s leader Bhupendra Tomar alias Pinky Chaudhary said Hindu Raksha Dal workers barged into the JNU campus on Sunday night as “anti-national and anti-Hindu activities” were being carried out there.

JNU is a hub of communists and we won’t tolerate such hubs. They abuse our religion and our country. Their attitude towards our religion is anti-national. In future, too, we will take the same action in other universities if someone tries to indulge in anti-national activities,” Tomar said in the 1 minute and 59 second video.

Meanwhile, government sources said that claims made by Tomar are being investigated. “Delhi Police has taken cognizance. To identity masked men in JNU, Police is taking help of video footage as well as face recognition systems,” the sources said.

Violence broke out at JNU on Sunday as a masked mob armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus.

Over 20 people, including JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as chaos reigned on the campus for two hours.

The violence drew strong reactions from opposition parties which hit out at the BJP and accused “those in power” of trying to scuttle the voice of students.

The Delhi Police are also using face-recognition software to identity the masked people who came armed with sticks and sharp weapons, people with direct knowledge of the matter said. The police are scanning multiple video clips to unmask the attackers, who charged at students and professors after sundown on the campus.

Delhi Police has filed two FIRs against JNU students’ union leader Aishe Ghosh and several other people for allegedly vandalising the university server room and attacking security guards on Saturday. The FIRs claim Ms Ghosh “indulged in physical violence”, “pushed lady guards” and “threatened” guards.

University officials have claimed a group of students, led by Ms Ghosh – who is President of the students union and Saket Moon – who is Vice President – broke into the server room on Friday and vandalised servers to hamper registration ahead of the winter semester.

Officials said they sought to restore servers but “miscreants” re-entered around 1 pm on Saturday and again damaged them. Servers were restored for a second time around 4 pm, university officials said.

JNU Students Union hit back and said the university administration used “masked” security guards to destroy the server room and attack students. “They were shamefully wearing masks. JNUSU president was openly slapped,” the JNUSU had alleged.

Meanwhile Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday said “masked” men involved in the JNU attack will be exposed soon as the Home ministry has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an event, the Information and Broadcasting Minister said misunderstanding are deliberately being spread in JNU and others parts of the country to incite violence. “I feel that Home minister has ordered an enquiry and the masked men involved in the JNU attack will soon be unmasked.

Delhi Police is taking the help of video footage and face recognition system to identify those involved in the violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here on Sunday, government sources said. The violence was perpetrated by a group of masked men at the premises of the prestigious institution.

Police is taking the help of video footage as well as face recognition system to identify the culprits, the sources said on Tuesday. The police is also investigating the claim made by a group called Hindu Raksha Dal of being involved in the violence at the university.

The Delhi Police has registered two FIRs in connection with vandalism at the server room at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, police said on Tuesday. The FIRs were registered on the complaint of JNU administration on 5 January, they said.

The JNU administration had given the names of students union office bearers including its president Aishe Gosh in connection with the vandalism but police have not put her name or that of other students in the accused column of the FIRs.

Bollywood celebrities took to their social media handles to condemn the rampage carried out by a masked mob on the students and teachers. Swara Bhasker, Taapsee Pannu, Anurag Kashyap, Shabana Azmi, Riteish Deshmukh and others have opened up about the violence.

Kriti Sanon SAID : “It breaks my heart to see what happened at JNU! What’s going on in India is horrifying!! Students & teachers being beaten up & terrorized by masked cowards!! The constant blame game!Stooping so low for political agendas!Violence is NEVER a solution! How have we become so inhuman?”

Taapsee Pannu SAID : “such is the condition inside what we consider to be a place where our future is shaped. It’s getting scarred for ever. Irreversible damage. What kind of shaping up is happening here, it’s there for us to see…. saddening”

Meanwhile Hundreds of protesters who gathered at Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India since Sunday night in anger against the mob attack in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) were forced out by the police this morning and moved to Azad Maidan, 2 km away. This after the police were told by the students that there was no leader of the protest and no one would listen to the requests to shift to Azad Maidan.

Policemen then physically removed from the popular tourist site that became the epicentre of the “Occupy Gateway” protest. The police say while some moved voluntarily, some had to be dragged away from the site after they refused to comply.

A police officer told there are no toilet or water facilities at the Gateway of India and it was becoming a challenge to control the crowd at what is one of the busiest sites in Mumbai.

Actor Anil Kapoor has strongly condemned the violent attack on the students and faculty members of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) by masked assailants on Sunday night.

The actor said, “It has to be condemned. It was quite sad and quite shocking. What I saw was very disturbing. In fact, main poori raat soya nahi yeh soch soch ke ki what is happening. (In fact, I did not sleep all night because I was thinking about what is happening.) It has to be condemned. Violence se kuch hone wala nahi hai. Jinhone yeh kiya, they should be punished, absolutely.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union on Monday sought the removal of Vice Chancellor and accused him of being behind the violence unleashed in the university on Sunday. The administration had in a statement on Saturday condemned “any form of violence in the campus”.

A mob of around 50 to 60 masked men and women, holding sticks and rods entered hostel buildings, assaulted students and vandalised the campus. many were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. They were discharged on Monday morning, AIIMS Trauma Centre Chief Dr Rajesh Malhotra told ANI. A few students were reportedly admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital but there is no clarity on the exact number. Among those injured were the president of the students’ union Aishe Ghosh and faculty member Sucharita Sen.

“Mr Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, it is time to go!” Monday’s statement from the university’s students’ union said. “The JNU community has a single point demand. That either this V-C resign or the MHRD [Ministry of Human Resource Development] as the competent authority remove him! M Jagadesh Kumar is behaving like a mobster who perpetuates violence in the university he is supposed to administer

Masked goons, armed with sticks and stones, barged into Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Sunday evening and beat up students and teachers, spreading chaos and terror. Nineteen students, all from Left-backed groups, and five teachers were injured and hospitalised. The Left students and the ABVP, the student wing linked to the BJP, have accused each other of involvement in the attack. Late in the evening, the JNU authorities called in the police, who held a flag march and declared the situation normal. But students and staff insisted that the miscreants are still lurking in the campus and that they were not safe. They also accused the university authorities and the police of complicity. Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah has asked Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik for a report. Hundreds, meanwhile, gathered outside the city’s police headquarters to protest against the violence.

Demanding a complete rollback of the hostel fee hike, thousands of JNU students today started their protest march from the university campus towards the Parliament amid heavy police deployment. Authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in and outside the university and stopped the march a kilometer away from the university gate after the students crossed three layers of police barricading.

Entry and exit points of three Delhi Metro stations near Parliament have been shut down temporarily due to the ongoing JNU protest, authorities said on Monday. “As advised by Delhi Police, trains are not halting at Udyog Bhawan and Patel Chowk. Exit/Entry gates for Udyog Bhawan, Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat have been closed temporarily,” the DMRC tweeted.

In face of unrelenting protests, the police has resorted to lathi charge. The JNU students are gathered near the Safdarjung tomb. After the resistance of police force, the protesting JNU students took an alternate route from Bikaji Cama Place to continue their march towards Parliament against the recent fee hike implemented in the university.

Cong spokesperson Pawan Khera, says the crackdown by Police shows that the government is afraid of the youth. “It clearly shows that this govt is afraid of the youth of India. It is afraid of any University which encourages free school of thought. The proposed fee hike would make JNU one of the most expensive universities, students are right in demanding a roll back,” he said. Meanwhile Delhi Police PRO has said that they will inquire into lathi charge allegations made by JNU students.
