In a compelling convergence of intellect and strategic discourse, Mr. Rahul Kashyap, Executive Director at PR Professionals Group and an eminent expert in Media and Corporate Communications, chaired a high-impact Round Table on the “Role of Media and Academia During War” at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The session featured prominent thought leaders and academics who explored the synergy between media and academia in times of conflict, emphasising their combined influence on public perception, policy formulation, and strategic narrative-building.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) K.G. Suresh, a veteran journalist and media educator who has previously served as Vice Chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Director General of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. Prof. Suresh provided nuanced perspectives on the media’s role in shaping national and international discourse during conflict situations.

The Round Table also saw insightful contributions from Dr. Rajan Kumar, Associate Professor at JNU’s School of International Studies and an authority on international politics and India-Russia relations; Dr. Rahul Mishra, an Indo-Pacific geopolitics expert and Associate Professor at JNU, who has held academic positions across Asia; and Mr. Sandeep Mahapatra, Supreme Court advocate, former JNUSU President, and an expert in international law.

The session, marked by intellectual rigour and reflective dialogue, served as a meaningful attempt to bridge the often-perceived divide between media practitioners and academic thinkers. With participation from senior faculty and research scholars, the event reinforced the power of collaboration in enhancing national preparedness and informed discourse during times of geopolitical unrest.

For communication professionals, the session underscored the critical need for strategic storytelling, responsible media practices, and academic depth in navigating complex narratives during conflict. The event not only highlighted JNU’s enduring intellectual legacy but also emphasized the growing importance of informed media-academia alliances in shaping resilient public opinion and policy.

A team of researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has developed new drug molecules against the protozoa that causes amoebiasis.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Entamoeba histolytica is the third-leading cause of morbidity and mortality due to parasitic disease in humans. It causes amoebiasis or amoebic dysentery, which is highly prevalent in developing countries. A team of researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has developed new drug molecules against the protozoa that causes amoebiasis.

This protozoan is anaerobic or micro-aerophilic in nature such that it cannot survive high concentrations of oxygen. However, during infection, it faces a high surge of oxygen inside the human body. The organism synthesizes large amounts of cysteine to counter oxidative stress.

This pathogen deploys cysteine as one of the essential molecules in its defence mechanism against high oxygen levels. Entamoeba expresses two crucial enzymes for synthesizing cysteine. Researchers from JNU has characterized and determined the molecular structures of both these crucial enzymes. “We have also successfully screened for potent inhibitors for one of the enzymes, O-acetyl L-serine sulfhydrylase (OASS). Some of these inhibitors can check the growth of this organism with high efficacy,” said Prof. Samudrala Gourinath, lead researcher, School of Life Sciences, JNU, while speaking with India Science Wire.

“Cysteine biosynthesis is crucial for the survival of E. histolytica and may be similar protozoan parasites. These can be targeted by inhibiting their pathways, which we have successfully done. The identified molecules can be lead to the development of drug molecules” said Dr Gourinath.

The research team includes Sudhaker Dharavath, Ramachandran Vijayan, Khushboo Kumari, and Priya Tomar. The study has been published in the journal European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union on Monday sought the removal of Vice Chancellor and accused him of being behind the violence unleashed in the university on Sunday. The administration had in a statement on Saturday condemned “any form of violence in the campus”.

A mob of around 50 to 60 masked men and women, holding sticks and rods entered hostel buildings, assaulted students and vandalised the campus. many were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. They were discharged on Monday morning, AIIMS Trauma Centre Chief Dr Rajesh Malhotra told ANI. A few students were reportedly admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital but there is no clarity on the exact number. Among those injured were the president of the students’ union Aishe Ghosh and faculty member Sucharita Sen.

“Mr Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, it is time to go!” Monday’s statement from the university’s students’ union said. “The JNU community has a single point demand. That either this V-C resign or the MHRD [Ministry of Human Resource Development] as the competent authority remove him! M Jagadesh Kumar is behaving like a mobster who perpetuates violence in the university he is supposed to administer

Masked goons, armed with sticks and stones, barged into Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Sunday evening and beat up students and teachers, spreading chaos and terror. Nineteen students, all from Left-backed groups, and five teachers were injured and hospitalised. The Left students and the ABVP, the student wing linked to the BJP, have accused each other of involvement in the attack. Late in the evening, the JNU authorities called in the police, who held a flag march and declared the situation normal. But students and staff insisted that the miscreants are still lurking in the campus and that they were not safe. They also accused the university authorities and the police of complicity. Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah has asked Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik for a report. Hundreds, meanwhile, gathered outside the city’s police headquarters to protest against the violence.

Many people gathered outside the old Delhi Police Headquarters, including senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid and CPI General Secretary D Raja to protest against Jamia crackdown by dehli police. Students from all across Delhi joined the agitation, with Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union giving a call for overnight stir. The protesters raised anti-police slogans outside the headquarters in ITO area.

On Sunday three Delhi Transport Corporation buses were torched in south Delhi, following which hundreds of police officers entered Jamia Millia Islamia University to “chase some outsiders who had indulged in vandalism”.

The police used batons and teargas shells to disperse the violent mob and entered the Jamia university campus, detaining several persons allegedly involved in the violence.

Escorted by police, some youths could be seen coming out of their hostels with their hands raised. Some of them claimed the police also entered the library and “harassed” the students.

Sources said that at least 40 people were injured in the clashes and were taken to a nearby hospital. Father George PA, director of Holy Family Hospital, said, We received university students and also two police personnel who suffered injuries, bruises. Most of them have been discharged now.” He said that three-four persons, including two police personnel, were admitted to the hospital. “They have got injures on head, maybe due to stone pelting. None of them are critical. We are taking care of them,” he said.

Amia Millia Islamia Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan claimed that the Delhi Police entered the campus forcibly without any permission and beat up staff members and students who were forced to leave the campus. Condemning the police action, university vice chancellor Najma Akhtar said students who were inside the library have been taken out and are safe.

Police said they entered the university campus only to control the situation, after protesters indulged in the violence. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said four buses and two police vehicles were torched during the protest, and six policemen were injured. He said stones were pelted from inside the university campus at police personnel, forcing them to use teargas to disperse the “violent mob”. Biswal said some people have been detained but did not give details.

In the wake of violence during protests against the amended Citizenship Act in south Delhi, DMRC closed gates of several metro stations, including GTB Nagar, Shivaji Stadium, Patel Chowk and Vishwavidyalaya, on Sunday evening for several hours.
