In a significant step towards strengthening advanced rehabilitation and pain management services, Ispat General Hospital (IGH), of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has introduced High-Power LASER Therapy (HPLT) at its Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre. The newly installed High-Power LASER Therapy System brings state-of-the-art technology to patients seeking effective, non-invasive treatment for pain and musculoskeletal disorders.

It is worth mentioning here that this advanced treatment modality uses focused light energy to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, promote tissue repair, and accelerate recovery. It is particularly beneficial for patients suffering from chronic back pain, neck pain, arthritis, sports injuries, tendon and ligament disorders, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, nerve-related pain, and post-operative rehabilitation.

Available in very few hospitals of western Odisha this technology further strengthens the comprehensive rehabilitation services available at IGH. Patients can now access advanced physiotherapy interventions closer to home, reducing the need to travel to metropolitan centres for specialized treatment.

Notably, the Physiotherapy Unit of IGH has a rich history of providing quality rehabilitation services to patients from Rourkela and surrounding regions for several decades. Over the years, the department has earned the trust of the community through its patient-centred approach, evidence-based treatment practices, and consistently high levels of patient satisfaction.

Headed by Dr. S. K. Tiwari, the dedicated physiotherapy team, comprising Mr. B N Panda and Mr. Premanand, plays a vital role in delivering personalized, evidence-based rehabilitation care with excellent clinical outcomes. The department offers a wide range of modern physiotherapy and rehabilitation services for orthopaedic, neurological, paediatric, geriatric, sports injury, and post-surgical patients. The unit is equipped with advanced rehabilitation equipment and treatment modalities, enabling comprehensive care under one roof.

The Physiotherapy Centre is open not only to SAIL employees and their beneficiaries but also to the general public, ensuring that quality rehabilitation services are accessible to all. With the addition of the High-Power LASER Therapy System, Ispat General Hospital continues its tradition of combining experience, expertise, and modern technology to provide high-quality rehabilitation care.

The expert medical team of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has saved the life of a critical patient suffering from severe poisoning through Hemoperfusion Dialysis, the first such reported case in Western Odisha.

The patient was brought to IGH in an unconscious condition and was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He was detected with Paraquat, a highly lethal poison with an almost 100 percent mortality rate if not treated promptly. Paraquat poisoning has no antidote, and the only effective life-saving intervention is Hemoperfusion Dialysis, which must be initiated within 24 hours to remove the toxin from the bloodstream.

Hemoperfusion is a highly challenging and advanced dialysis technique in which poisonous substances are removed from the blood by passing it through a special dialyser, while preserving essential body proteins. The procedure requires specialized equipment, expertise, and precise monitoring.

Considering the critical time factor, Dr. S. K. Rout, Chief Nephrologist, IGH, along with his dedicated team, decided to perform the complex procedure using the hospital’s existing facilities. The timely intervention proved successful, following which the patient showed significant improvement. His vital parameters stabilized, and he was closely monitored for ten days to rule out any complications.

The procedure and post-treatment care were supported by the committed efforts of nursing and technical staff, including Sister Anita, Sister Munita, technicians Dhananjaya, Srabani, Mahima, and other members of the Artificial Kidney Unit, who worked tirelessly for the patient’s recovery.

Dr. Rout has said that IGH is now fully capable of managing poisoning cases requiring Hemoperfusion Dialysis if patients are brought in at the right time, eliminating the need for referral to Bhubaneswar for such treatment.

It is noteworthy that the Artificial Kidney Unit of IGH was established in 1984 and has been serving patients from Rourkela and neighboring regions ever since. The unit provides comprehensive kidney care services, including kidney biopsy, permanent catheter insertion, hemodialysis, plasmapheresis, and other advanced renal therapies. The PMJAY empanelled hospital is well equipped to serve advanced treatment to patients with kidney-related ailments.

In a unique and critical case, doctors at Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) successfully saved the life of a 9-year-old boy of Rourkela, who was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in an unconscious state because of suicidal hanging.

On examination, ligature marks were observed on the child’s neck. He was immediately intubated and administered emergency medical care in the PICU under the supervision of Dr. Jayant Kumar Acharya, CMO In-charge, Dr. Archana Behera, Dr. Maya Bose, Dr. Poonam Ekka, Dr. Bibekanand Singh, and the team of DNB residents. The anesthesia team headed by Dr. B. K. Naik also played a vital role in the management. Through prompt and coordinated multidisciplinary efforts, the patient’s neurological condition gradually improved. He was later successfully extubated, treated, provided psychological counselling, and discharged in a stable state.

This case underscores the critical importance of early and skilled resuscitation, coupled with the availability of round-the-clock pediatric critical care facilities at IGH.

While suicidal tendencies have traditionally been associated with adolescents, recent trends indicate a disturbing rise in such behaviours among pre-adolescent children. Experts attribute this to multiple factors including increased exposure to mobile phones and social media, cyber-bullying, unsupervised access to inappropriate online content, and psychological stress resulting from peer comparison.

The case highlights the urgent need for stronger parental supervision, digital literacy, and the integration of school-based mental health programmes to nurture emotional resilience and well-being among children from an early age.

The successful recovery of the young patient once again reflects IGH’s prompt response, multidisciplinary teamwork, and strong commitment to high-quality pediatric critical care—bringing hope and saving lives even in the most sensitive cases.

The dedicated Neurosurgery team of Ispat General Hospital (IGH), Rourkela, has once again showcased their exceptional expertise by busting the common myth that spine surgeries invariably lead to prolonged recovery periods. The team successfully performed an urgent lumbar spine surgery on a 41-year-old female employee, enabling her to walk again on the very next day after the procedure.

The patient was admitted to the Orthopedics Department with severe low backache radiating to both legs, coupled with inability to stand, walk, turn on the bed, and difficulty in passing urine and stools, three days prior to admission. An MRI revealed an L5-S1 Extruded Disc causing Cauda Equina Syndrome, a condition requiring immediate intervention. She was promptly referred to the Neurosurgery Department, where urgent surgery was planned.

The surgery was conducted by Dr. Manoj Kumar Deo, Senior Consultant (Neurosurgery), with anesthesia support from Dr. Manoranjan Samantray, Additional CMO, and intra-operative assistance from Sister Godhuli and Brother Kamalakar.

In the post-operative period, the patient demonstrated remarkable improvement. She was able to stand and walk on the very next day after the surgery and reported nearly 70% relief from her pre-operative complaints. She is presently recovering well.

This achievement once again reinforces the clinical excellence of the Neurosurgery team at IGH, which continues to deliver advanced, life-changing care to patients in and around Rourkela.
