Reinforcing its green commitment, Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) led by Shri Atul Sobti DG, SCOPE hosted a high-level meeting with GIZ team led by Ms. Ulrike Ebeling, Country Director, GIZ India. Attended by senior officials from SCOPE and GIZ, the meeting deliberated upon the continued association between the two organizations in guiding  PSEs through climate mitigation, industrial decarbonization, knowledge exchange, and climate capacity building. The Ministry of Steel held a one-day Chintan Shivir 2026 at the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab. Led by Secretary Steel Shri Sandeep Poundrik, the summit focused on the theme of “Green Steel,” specifically targeting the secondary steel sector which contributes nearly 47% of India’s total production. Key discussions centered on low-carbon breakthroughs, including green hydrogen injection in blast furnaces and the use of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to reduce grid dependence.

During the event, it was announced that NISST has been designated as the nodal agency for Green Steel Certification, having already issued certificates to 76 industries covering nearly 11 million tonnes of production. Secretary Poundrik emphasized that the government is working on a new incentive scheme to support technology upgrades and emission reductions. The deliberations aimed to prepare Indian steelmakers for global challenges like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) while driving the nation toward a sustainable, competitive future in the global market.
