Cold water is being regularly sprayed inside the enclosures of leopards, bears, deer, and primates using water tankers to lower ambient temperatures. Air coolers have been installed in the enclosures of leopards, bears, primates, and macaws to offer relief from the high temperatures.

Water pools in the paddocks for bears, deer, and emus are being thoroughly scraped and cleaned to provide clean bathing areas for the animals. Enclosures are also cleaned regularly using medicinal disinfectants to maintain hygiene and prevent infections during the hot weather.

A continuous supply of cold, potable water is being maintained in the deer enclosures and wallowing ponds for sambars, nilgai and emus. To prevent dehydration and heat stress, the animals’ diets include electrolyte supplements, succulent feed, and anti-stress formulations mixed with drinking water, especially for primates, birds, and deer.

Water tankers are also used to sprinkle water over the animal sheds every alternate day to help reduce surface temperature and provide a cooling effect. Special care is being taken for sensitive and endangered species, ensuring they have easy access to water bodies at all times to regulate their body temperature and stay cool.

It is worth mentioning here that Indira Gandhi Park Zoo, the second-largest integrated zoo in Odisha, receives nearly one lakh visitors annually.

Dr. Avijit Biswas, DGM (Horticulture) & In-charge (ZDP) and Dr. Satyanarayan Mishra, Senior Manager (Horticulture) and Curator Biologist, led the guided tour, ensuring an engaging and interactive experience for the children. They were introduced to a variety of animals housed in the park’s enclosures, including tigers, bears, deer, gharials, monkeys, crocodiles, pythons and emus. The experts provided fascinating insights into the characteristics and behaviors of these species while patiently answering the children’s curious questions.

The children also visited the Doll Museum and enjoyed a joyful ride on the toy train that circles around the picturesque pond. The visit was attended by approximately 140 students from both institutions, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Refreshments were also provided, making the outing even more delightful.

Notably, Indira Gandhi Park, developed in the early 1950s, is one of Rourkela’s most prestigious parks, set against the stunning backdrop of Durgapur hill range. It features a rich variety of flora, attracting nature lovers and visitors. The park offers multiple attractions, including boating, an aquarium, a zoo, a musical fountain, and a children’s play arena equipped with seven play structures that bring joy to toddlers and young visitors.

The Indira Gandhi Park Zoo, managed by the Horticulture Department, is home to over 169 animals and birds from 22 different species, including six species of mammals, 13 species of birds, and three species of reptiles. The park has welcomed visitors from more than 10 schools in the month of January and February 2025, reinforcing its role as an important center for recreation and education in Rourkela.

The Indira Gandhi Park (IG Park) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has become a favorite destination for winter visitors, offering a delightful blend of nature and wildlife. A large number of school children are also flocking to the park and its zoo, eager to learn about biodiversity and the significance of environmental conservation. On 25^th January, 2025, more than 200 school children from St. Benedict English Medium School, Kinjirkela and Carmel School, Balijodi visited the park , making the  park chirpy and cheerful.

It is noteworthy that a record 14651 people including large number of women and children visited IG Park on 1st January, 2025. The park had witnessed a footfall of around 11800 on 1st January in the previous year. The increase in number of visitors is credited to the latest additions of the Leopard pair and the attraction of two new Nilgai calves and two majestic bears besides diverse animals/birds in the park. The total revenue collected on 1st January, 2025 was around Rs. 7,32,540/-. The Town Engineering-Horticulture Department of RSP that takes care of the park has been making every effort to create awareness on the importance of bio-diversity besides educating the children on the importance of wildlife protection and environment. The biological information of the different resident species of animal/bird and their significance have been displayed in each housing of the inmates.

It is noteworthy that Indira Gandhi Park Zoo, the second-largest Zoological Park in Odisha, is home to a diverse range of 251 animals and birds, including the recent addition of two leopards, two bears and two new born Nilgai calves. Known for its successful breeding programs, the zoo actively participates in animal exchanges to enrich its biodiversity and provide new attractions for visitors. Adding to the festive spirit, the Ispat Nehru Park also witnessed a footfall of more than 3600 on the new year day to make it more vibrant and lively.
