As part of the summer care plan, cold water is being regularly sprayed inside the enclosures of leopards, bears, deer, and primates using water tankers to reduce ambient temperatures. Air coolers have also been installed in the enclosures of leopards, bears, monkeys, peacocks, and macaws to provide additional relief from the soaring heat.

To maintain hygiene and ensure animal comfort, water pools in the paddocks of bears, deer, and emus are being scraped and cleaned thoroughly to provide clean bathing spaces. Enclosures are being disinfected regularly with medicinal disinfectants to prevent infections and maintain sanitation during the hot season.

A continuous supply of cold and potable drinking water is being ensured in the deer enclosures and wallowing ponds for sambars, nilgai, and emus. In addition, to prevent dehydration and heat-related stress, the animals are being provided electrolyte supplements, succulent feed, and anti-stress formulations mixed with drinking water, particularly for primates, birds, and deer.

Water tankers are also being deployed to sprinkle water over animal sheds every alternate day to reduce surface temperature and create a cooling effect. Special attention is being given to sensitive and endangered species, ensuring uninterrupted access to water bodies for effective body temperature regulation.

Notably, Indira Gandhi Park Zoo, is the the second-largest integrated zoo in Odisha, which attracts nearly one lakh visitors every year.

It is noteworthy that a series of initiatives is being implemented under the attentive guidance of Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge, RSP, to enhance the quality of life and provide more recreational opportunities for the residents of the Steel Township. Following the renovation of the musical fountain and the launch of the exciting Laser Show at Indira Gandhi Park, this is another significant step in this direction.     

In exchange for the leopards, the Indira Gandhi Park Zoo contributed one male and three female four-horned antelopes. The leopards were transported over 1,700 kilometers in a specially equipped truck to ensure their safety and comfort during the journey. The male leopard is approximately 8 years old, while the female is around 7 years old. Both animals are fitted with transponders for identification and monitoring.

Upon arrival, the leopards have been placed in quarantine for a 21-day observation period. Thereafter they will be accessible for public viewing. The leopards are adjusting well to their new environment and are consuming their regular diet. Currently housed in the leopard enclosure under constant observation, the leopards are healthy and acclimatizing to their surroundings.

As the second-largest Zoological Park in Odisha, the Indira Gandhi Park Zoo is home to a diverse range of 251 animals and birds, including the recent addition of two bears and a new born Nilgai. Known for its successful breeding programs, the zoo actively participates in animal exchanges to enrich its biodiversity and provide new attractions for visitors.
