NEW DELHI. The department of posts has announced a major technological leap in India’s addressing system with the launch of DIGIPIN, a new 10-digit alphanumeric digital code that will replace the existing six-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) system introduced in 1972.

Developed jointly by IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO, the DIGIPIN system is designed to pinpoint every address in India with high accuracy, mapping each location to a four-metre by four-metre grid.

According to Vivek Daksh, deputy director general, department of posts, the new system aims to improve precision and efficiency in sorting and delivery. He stated that the traditional PIN code system, though effective for its time, now needs an upgrade to match modern delivery and navigation requirements.

The DIGIPIN system is expected to enhance last-mile delivery services, support emergency response systems, and simplify navigation in rural and densely populated urban areas where conventional addresses often lead to confusion.

To facilitate smooth implementation, the postal department has sought technical and strategic assistance from institutions such as IIM and IISc Bengaluru to study the nationwide adoption of the digital pincode framework.

While the existing six-digit PIN codes will continue for now, the new DIGIPIN system marks the beginning of a phased transition towards a more accurate, technology-driven addressing infrastructure across the country.

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) unveiled an India Post Special Cover and Special Cancellation Cachet to celebrate Coal India Limited’s Golden Jubilee and SECL’s Ruby Jubilee. The release, held under the Government of India’s Special Campaign 5.0, was graced by senior officials from Coal India, SECL, and India Post. The commemorative cover, issued in collaboration with the Chhattisgarh Postal Circle, serves as a philatelic tribute to five decades of Coal India’s contribution to the nation’s energy sector and four decades of SECL’s operational excellence and innovation.

Since its inception in 1975, Coal India has remained India’s primary coal supplier, recently achieving record production that contributed to the nation’s landmark 1 billion tonnes of coal output in FY 2024–25. SECL, a key subsidiary operating in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, plays a vital role in this success, with its Gevra Mine being the largest in Asia. Beyond production, SECL emphasizes sustainability, environmental conservation, and community welfare, reinforcing its commitment to responsible nation-building and long-term growth.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that India Post will revolutionize its services by launching a guaranteed mail and parcel delivery service from January 2026. Under this new initiative, customers will be assured of a guaranteed delivery timeline within 24 and 48 hours. This means your items will now be guaranteed to be delivered within 24 to 48 hours. The launch of this service is likely to provide strong competition to private courier and parcel service providers.

The Communications Minister stated that these new services will upgrade the existing Speed Post network. Under this, mail delivery will be ensured within 24 hours. Deliveries through this service will be completed within 48 hours. Scindia also announced another significant initiative: a “next-day parcel delivery” service will be launched. This service will dramatically reduce parcel delivery times. Instead of the current 3 to 5 days, parcels will be delivered the very next day.

The Communications Minister also addressed India Post’s financial future. He stated that the government’s overarching goal is to transform India Post from a mere cost center to a profit center by 2029. This initiative will help India Post compete with private courier companies and increase its efficiency and revenue by ensuring timely and reliable delivery to customers.

The minister informed that India has secured 49th position in the Network Readiness Index 2024, which was 60 last year. Also, India has now joined the Tier-1 category in the Global Cybersecurity Index, where it has a score of 98.49/100.

India Post has successfully deployed the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) application across the entire network of over 1.64 lakh post offices nationwide, including urban, rural, and remote areas. This deployment is a key milestone under our IT 2.0 initiative, aimed at modernizing and streamlining postal operations.

The rollout commenced on August 4, 2025. While initial implementation encountered some slowness due to the system’s scale, our technical teams responded promptly and resolved the issues within 24 hours, ensuring minimal impact on our services.

As of August 5, the new system has demonstrated its capabilities with over 20 lakh articles booked and more than 25 lakh items delivered across the country. The APT platform enhances transaction speed, enables smooth digital payments, provides real-time tracking, and improves the overall user experience for our customers.

To support this transition, dedicated monitoring teams are actively overseeing operations and addressing any challenges swiftly. We remain committed to providing efficient, uninterrupted, and citizen-focused services.
