Mumbai and Thane are likely to receive heavy rain on Tuesday with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall (between 64 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours) at isolated places.

The intensity of the rain is likely to reduce from Wednesday, with the weather bureau issuing a yellow alert for Mumbai.

Moderate to a few intense spells, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, hit parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas on Monday evening. Between 5 pm and 7 pm, Bandra recorded 20.2 mm, Santacruz 16.6 mm, Ram Mandir 28.5 mm and Thane and Kalyan between 40 mm to 70 mm of rainfall.

For the coastal districts – Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg – IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall (above 204 mm) on Tuesday.

“Given the low pressure area formed in north-west Bay of Bengal, parts of Konkan-Goa and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are very likely to receive enhanced rainfall activity during the next two days with a gradual reduction thereafter,” said IMD.

With the formation of the low pressure area, south-westerly monsoon flow is expected to strengthen, leading to an increase in rainfall activity in the state.

According to the forecast for Mumbai, occasional gusty winds with speed reaching 45 kmph to 55 kmph, along and off the coast, may damage vulnerable and temporary structures. With heavy to very heavy rainfall warning, flooding and traffic disruptions are also likely on Tuesday.

After above-average rainfall in August, Palghar, Mumbai and Raigad recorded deficient rainfall in September. Mumbai received 123.6 mm of rain between September 1 and 21, which is 46 per cent below the average (229.7 mm) for the same period. It had received 3261.3 mm rain since June 1, which is 55 per cent above the average mark.

Six hours of Cyclone Amphan’s wrecking winds left Kolkata airport flooded and many structures within damaged. At least 12 people died in Bengal as winds at 120 km/hour and heavy rain left a trail of devastation.

Cyclone Amphan, one of the worst storms over the Bay of Bengal in years, has killed 12 people in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.

The powerful cyclone destroyed thousands of homes, leaving authorities struggling to mount relief efforts amid the coronavirus crisis. Bengal took the brunt of Cyclone Amphan, which barreled into the coast with gusting winds of up to 185 km per hour.

Ms Banerjee said the impact of Amphan was worse than the coronavirus pandemic and claimed damages due to the cyclone could be in the region of Rs 1 lakh crore. Over five lakh people had been taken to shelters in Bengal and over one lakh in Odisha.

Road clearance and restoration work by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are underway after extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan hit West Bengal .

NDRF Director-General SN Pradhan tweeted photographs of restoration work by NDRF personnel at various locations in West Bengal, including North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Howrah, Kolkata and South 24 Parganas.

The cyclone made landfall with gusting winds of up to 185 kmph and waves about 15 feet tall. Over five lakh people had been placed in shelters in West Bengal and over one lakh in Odisha.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that severe cyclonic storm Amphan over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coast moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 30 km/ph during the past six hours and it is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken further into a deep depression during the next three hours and into a depression during subsequent six hours.

In its daily bulletin IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Western Assam and Meghalaya and heavy at other northeastern states during the next 24 hours. IMD has also predicted a Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and squall at isolated places in Bihar and lightning and gusty winds over Lakshadweep, and Kerala.

On January 17, Mumbai had recorded the minimum temperature at 11.4 degrees Celsius, which is the coldest January morning since 2012 and coldest this season so far. The weather bureau said cool weather was likely to continue through the weekend.

“Mumbai and surrounding areas recorded one of the coldest mornings again with minimum temperatures going far below the benchmark at many places especially in suburbs. Over the last two days, the weather pattern due to cool northerly winds has allowed temperatures to drop below the normal mark. This trend of cold breeze during early hours of the day is expected to continue for at least three days,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Cold wave continued unabated in the national capital on Friday, with the minimum temperature settling three notches below normal.

Twenty-one trains were delayed for a maximum of six hours in the north due to weather conditions.

“The minimum temperature was recorded at 4.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal,” a meteorological department official said.

The humidity level was recorded at 86 per cent.

According to meteorological department, the city will witness clear sky, shallow fog in the morning, cold day to severe cold day conditions at many places.

The maximum temperature will hover around 15 degrees Celsius, the official said.

The air quality was recorded in the “very poor” category (365), primarily due to low wind speed, high humidity and cold weather on Friday morning.

With a numbing cold continuing to sweep Delhi-NCR, the region is expected to record its second-coldest December since 1901, the weather department said.

According to the IMD, a “cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 notches below normal. A “severe cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Delhi-NCR, the region is expected to record its second-coldest December since 1901, the weather department said “The mean maximum temperature for December was less than 20 degrees Celsius only in 1919, 1929, 1961 and 1997,” an official of the India Meteorological Department said.

In December this year, the mean maximum temperature (MMT) till Thursday was 19.85 degrees Celsius. It is expected to dip to 19.15 degrees Celsius by December 31, he said.

“If it happens, it will be the second-coldest December since 1901. December 1997 recorded the lowest MMT of 17.3 degrees Celsius,” the official said.

Temperature in the national capital Delhi continued to dip on Wednesday, as cold winds from snow-clad regions blew in with the north-westerly winds.

The IMD said that the night temperature on Tuesday touched nearly 9 degree Celsius.

On Tuesday, the difference between the maximum and the minimum temperature dipped to 1.8 degrees, making the day the coldest since 1997. The maximum temperature was 12.2 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature on Tuesday was recorded 10.4 degree Celsius.

“Today (Wednesday) similar conditions are likely to prevail. The low cloud cover will not allow sunlight to reach the ground and keep the day cold,” said Kuldeep Srivastava head of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) regional weather forecasting centre.

Scientists also warned that an impending western disturbance on December 18 will bring rain and snowfall in many of states in north India, and its impact will bring down the temperature in Delhi further.
