IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur & IIT Madras Open Doors to the Next Generation of Industry 4.0 Leaders

Bengaluru, November 13, 2025: India’s manufacturing sector is at a turning point. With global competitiveness, sustainability, and innovation shaping the industry, there is a growing demand for leaders who can blend strategic insight with technological and operational excellence.

To nurture such leaders, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC), and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) have jointly launched the Post Graduate Program for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM), a one-year, full-time, residential program tailored for experienced engineers and professionals in manufacturing and allied sectors.

The course has been designed by these institutes in consultation with industry, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The PGPEX-VLM program brings together the core strengths of three premier institutions to create a learning experience that is comprehensive and future-oriented. Product and Technology Excellence – IIT Kanpur, Business Excellence – IIM Calcutta, and Process Excellence – IIT Madras. This collaboration integrates managerial acumen, technical depth, and process innovation to equip participants with the skills to lead manufacturing transformation in India and beyond.

The program features over 1,170 contact hours of classroom learning, industry cases, simulations, and practical projects. The curriculum spans key domains such as strategic management and leadership, operations and supply chain excellence, product design and automation, advanced manufacturing systems and quality management, and data analytics and technology-driven decision-making.

Participants will undergo an industry internship to apply their learning to real-world manufacturing challenges. A highlight of the program is the international immersion in Japan, offering direct exposure to world-class manufacturing practices, lean production systems, and technological innovation — hallmarks of Japanese industry excellence.

The PGPEX-VLM is perfect for mid- to senior-level professionals and experienced engineers (with at least 4.5 years of experience) seeking to expand their leadership capabilities, understand global best practices, and drive large-scale manufacturing innovation. The upper limit of experience is 10 years, unless the candidate is sponsored by an organization. Graduates of the PGPEX-VLM program will gain alumni status of all three institutions — IIT Kanpur, IIM Calcutta, and IIT Madras — giving them lifelong access to a vast and distinguished professional network.

Coal India signed MoU with IIT (M) establish the “Centre for Sustainable Energy” at the IIT Madras

New Delhi: Coal India Limited announced its collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to establish the “Centre for Sustainable Energy” at the IIT Madras. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed at the corporate office in Kolkata. The MoU was signed by CIL, Director (Technical), Shri Achyut Ghatak, and Shri V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in the presence of Chairman, Shri P.M. Prasad, along with senior officials from both the organizations.

In a statement, the Ministry of Coal said that the Centre will focus on cutting-edge Research and Development in sustainable energy, with goals to develop low-carbon technologies, repurpose coal mines, and create innovative solutions to support India’s clean energy transition. It added that CIL’s funding will drive these initiatives as part of its strategy to diversify into clean energy solutions.

CIL Chairman P M Prasad said the partnership reflects Coal India’s transformation from being a traditional energy provider to a key player in India’s clean energy future. He stressed the importance of generating indigenous solutions to ensure energy security and support decarbonization. Director IIT Madras, V. Kamakoti also highlighted the significance of industry-academia collaborations in India’s low-carbon transition.

The Ministry further underlined that the Centre will also focus on developing human capital through Ph.D., postdoctoral, and internship programs to empower the next generation of researchers in green energy.

The Centre will serve as a hub for cutting-edge R&D and capacity-building initiatives in sustainable energy technologies.

Sundaravadivelu, Retired Senior Professor at the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras, and Director of the Centre for Innovative & Sustainable Technologies for Offshore Infrastructure (CISTOI), visited Matter – Material Testing and Research Laboratory – in Kozhikode on May 29, 2025.

Matterlab, a NABL-accredited initiative of the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), is a cutting-edge facility offering comprehensive testing and research services across civil and construction domains. During his visit, Prof. Sundaravadivelu toured the lab’s infrastructure, reviewed its operations in detail, and expressed strong appreciation for the facility’s advanced technical capabilities.

He was particularly impressed by the copuler testing process and lauded the technicians for their meticulous safety practices. “Labs like Matterlab must evolve into research and knowledge hubs, addressing pressing infrastructural challenges,” he remarked. He emphasized that such facilities should play a larger role in shaping preventive strategies for infrastructure development.

Highlighting recent incidents like the Wayanad landslide and frequent highway failures in Kerala, Prof. Sundaravadivelu urged government bodies and the private sector to leverage credible facilities like Matterlab to ensure structural integrity, safety, and long-term sustainability in construction projects.

His visit underlines the critical role that high-quality research and testing infrastructure play in supporting Kerala’s infrastructure ambitions.
