Bangalore, January 14, 2025: The Tata Group today announced a partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to establish the Tata IISc Medical School in the IISc Bengaluru campus.

Under an MoU signed today, the Tata Group will make a contribution of Rs 500 crore to support the establishment of the medical school.

The Tata IISc Medical School will be a centre of excellence that seeks to catalyse a unique model of clinical research and medical education in India, by bringing basic science and engineering to bear on clinical science and practice. It will focus on a variety of specialities including oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health.

The Tata IISc Medical School will offer integrated MD-PhD and other dual degree programmes to create a new cadre of physician-scientists and medical technologists. These students will be trained simultaneously in the medical school as well as science and engineering labs at IISc, combining cutting-edge clinical practice with scientific research. The medical school seeks to establish a unique model of clinical research and training that can be emulated nationwide. It will also collaborate with renowned medical schools from across the world to enable students to acquire global expertise, knowledge and practices.

On this occasion, Mr N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons said: “Healthcare is one of India’s biggest challenges and also one of its greatest opportunities, given the scale at which technology will be able to transform everything from diagnosis to care and community health. We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Tata IISc Medical School. In time, the institute’s emphasis on cutting-edge research and global collaboration will create a highly qualified cadre of physician-scientists trained in the latest approaches to modern medicine. Their effect will be felt across the spectrum of healthcare, and will help individuals access quality treatment. I believe that the Tata IISC Medical School will play a significant role in keeping our communities healthy and positioning India at the forefront of the global healthcare revolution.”

“We are very grateful to the Tata Group for their generosity,” said Prof G Rangarajan, Director, IISc. “After a century of contributions to science and engineering, we now have a unique opportunity to create new frontiers in medicine. The Tatas and IISc have a century-old legacy of commitment to excellence. The Institute owes its existence to the munificence and far-sighted vision of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who was unparalleled in his philanthropy towards education in India. We are firmly committed to carrying forward this legacy and breaking new ground in creating affordable healthcare solutions for India and the rest of the world.”

In a pathbreaking technological progress in the field of AI, a group of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has developed an analogous computing platform within a molecular film which is able to mimic human brain-like functioning, according a News Report in the Indian Express. The Bengaluru-based researchers working at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) at IISc said that the ‘brain on the chip’ design, even though it is analogous, could perform functions like processing and data storage which showed close resemblance to that of a human brain. And more importantly, it offers 16,500 conductance states within the molecular film. For comparison, the existing digital computing platform needs to be programmed and it operates on the binary states of 0 and 1. They can also be bulky on energy and time consumption, thus offering a reduced speed in comparison to the estimated AI-based calculation speeds with this platform.

This could revolutionise and shatter the glass ceiling of overall AI capabilities present today. The new platform, researchers said, offers flexibility and easy deployability of AI-Based tasks on to one’s personal electronic gadgets like smart phones, laptops and desktops. This would also significantly find use in computing applications, in Machine Learning and scientific computing, the IISc team on their work which addressed some of the pressing gaps in the present-day neuromorphic (following human brain-like computing techniques) operations. Unlike the energy-heavy operability in the digital platforms used for extensive computing purposes, use of molecular films permitted researchers to track free Ionic movements, which widened the memory pathways.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) slipped 11 spots in Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings 2020-21 released on Tuesday (June 9).

Only three institutes from India managed to find a place in top 200 in QS World Rankings this year. The Indian institutes in the list are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore. It may be recalled that IIT Delhi was ranked 182 in 2019 and it fell down to 193 this year.

IIT Delhi director Ramgopal Rao tweeted a letter asking people not to trust the rankings blindly and share some facts. According to Rao, the QS Rankings consider International faculty and students in the institute which is very low for IIT Delhi. He added that in 2019 rankings international students were below the global median and there was a need to hire the faculty. Rao said that IIT Delhi needs to hire 69 international faculty and 820 international students to be close to the global median.

The rankings are based on six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio, compilers of the rankings said.

IIT Bombay is ranked 172nd, while IISc is 185th and IIT Delhi is at 193rd place. A total of 21 Indian higher education institutions are in the top 1000. IISc is ranked as India’s best research university with a score of 100/100 on the ‘citations per faculty’ indicator.

Other IITs in the top 500 are: Madras (275), Kharagpur (314), Kanpur (350), Roorkee (383) and Guwahati (470).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is ranked as the world’s best university, followed by Stanford University (2nd) and Harvard University (3rd).
