Doctors at Ispat General Hospital (IGH), SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), successfully managed a critically injured 55-year-old road accident victim who was brought to the hospital in a semi-comatose condition with severe breathing difficulty. After emergency brain surgery followed by intensive care and rehabilitation, the patient has made significant recovery and is now planned for discharge after 23 days of hospitalisation.

Mr. Biranchi Narayan Sahoo sustained serious injuries in a road accident on 19th July 2026 after being hit by a vehicle in Civil Township, Raurkela. He was initially taken to private hospital, where a CT scan of the brain revealed a serious collection of blood over the brain along with significant brain injury. He was subsequently referred to IGH in a critical condition.

On arrival at IGH, the patient was immediately placed on ventilator support and taken up for emergency brain surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Manoj Kumar Deo, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, with anaesthesia support from Dr. Sanjukta Panigrahi, Additional CMO, Anaesthesia. Nursing Officer Lipika provided crucial intraoperative assistance. Following surgery, the patient required prolonged intensive care and ventilator support. The ICU team, led by Sister Shiny George, along with the nursing and critical care staff, provided continuous monitoring and care during the critical phase of his recovery.

Gradually, the patient’s condition started improving. He was successfully weaned from ventilator support and subsequently underwent a temporary tracheostomy to facilitate breathing during his recovery. With further improvement, he was shifted from the ICU to the ward. Over the following days, his level of consciousness steadily improved. He began following simple commands, interacting intermittently with his relatives and gradually accepting food orally. Once he was able to maintain adequate oral intake and breathe independently, the temporary tracheostomy was successfully removed.

The ward nursing team, including Gouri, Manaswini, Manisha, Nomita, Priyanka and other dedicated nursing staff, continued close monitoring, nursing care and support throughout his recovery. Intensive and individualised physiotherapy also played an important role in helping the patient regain strength and mobility following his prolonged critical illness. Physiotherapy care was provided by Mr. Premananda Swain and his team.

After 23 days of hospitalisation, Mr. Sahoo regained consciousness, was able to follow simple commands, take adequate food orally and walk with the support of one person. He is now planned for discharge in an improved condition.

The case highlights the importance of timely emergency intervention, advanced critical care, dedicated nursing and structured rehabilitation in the management of severe head injuries. The coordinated efforts of the Neurosurgery, Anaesthesia, ICU, Nursing and Physiotherapy teams at IGH contributed significantly to the patient’s recovery.

The successful outcome reflects the importance of multidisciplinary care in managing complex and life-threatening trauma cases at Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela.

In a significant step towards strengthening advanced rehabilitation and pain management services, Ispat General Hospital (IGH), of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has introduced High-Power LASER Therapy (HPLT) at its Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre. The newly installed High-Power LASER Therapy System brings state-of-the-art technology to patients seeking effective, non-invasive treatment for pain and musculoskeletal disorders.

It is worth mentioning here that this advanced treatment modality uses focused light energy to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, promote tissue repair, and accelerate recovery. It is particularly beneficial for patients suffering from chronic back pain, neck pain, arthritis, sports injuries, tendon and ligament disorders, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, nerve-related pain, and post-operative rehabilitation.

Available in very few hospitals of western Odisha this technology further strengthens the comprehensive rehabilitation services available at IGH. Patients can now access advanced physiotherapy interventions closer to home, reducing the need to travel to metropolitan centres for specialized treatment.

Notably, the Physiotherapy Unit of IGH has a rich history of providing quality rehabilitation services to patients from Rourkela and surrounding regions for several decades. Over the years, the department has earned the trust of the community through its patient-centred approach, evidence-based treatment practices, and consistently high levels of patient satisfaction.

Headed by Dr. S. K. Tiwari, the dedicated physiotherapy team, comprising Mr. B N Panda and Mr. Premanand, plays a vital role in delivering personalized, evidence-based rehabilitation care with excellent clinical outcomes. The department offers a wide range of modern physiotherapy and rehabilitation services for orthopaedic, neurological, paediatric, geriatric, sports injury, and post-surgical patients. The unit is equipped with advanced rehabilitation equipment and treatment modalities, enabling comprehensive care under one roof.

The Physiotherapy Centre is open not only to SAIL employees and their beneficiaries but also to the general public, ensuring that quality rehabilitation services are accessible to all. With the addition of the High-Power LASER Therapy System, Ispat General Hospital continues its tradition of combining experience, expertise, and modern technology to provide high-quality rehabilitation care.

The expert medical team of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has saved the life of a critical patient suffering from severe poisoning through Hemoperfusion Dialysis, the first such reported case in Western Odisha.

The patient was brought to IGH in an unconscious condition and was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He was detected with Paraquat, a highly lethal poison with an almost 100 percent mortality rate if not treated promptly. Paraquat poisoning has no antidote, and the only effective life-saving intervention is Hemoperfusion Dialysis, which must be initiated within 24 hours to remove the toxin from the bloodstream.

Hemoperfusion is a highly challenging and advanced dialysis technique in which poisonous substances are removed from the blood by passing it through a special dialyser, while preserving essential body proteins. The procedure requires specialized equipment, expertise, and precise monitoring.

Considering the critical time factor, Dr. S. K. Rout, Chief Nephrologist, IGH, along with his dedicated team, decided to perform the complex procedure using the hospital’s existing facilities. The timely intervention proved successful, following which the patient showed significant improvement. His vital parameters stabilized, and he was closely monitored for ten days to rule out any complications.

The procedure and post-treatment care were supported by the committed efforts of nursing and technical staff, including Sister Anita, Sister Munita, technicians Dhananjaya, Srabani, Mahima, and other members of the Artificial Kidney Unit, who worked tirelessly for the patient’s recovery.

Dr. Rout has said that IGH is now fully capable of managing poisoning cases requiring Hemoperfusion Dialysis if patients are brought in at the right time, eliminating the need for referral to Bhubaneswar for such treatment.

It is noteworthy that the Artificial Kidney Unit of IGH was established in 1984 and has been serving patients from Rourkela and neighboring regions ever since. The unit provides comprehensive kidney care services, including kidney biopsy, permanent catheter insertion, hemodialysis, plasmapheresis, and other advanced renal therapies. The PMJAY empanelled hospital is well equipped to serve advanced treatment to patients with kidney-related ailments.
