NEW DELHI. NITI Aayog has released a series of 11 study reports on “Scenarios towards Viksit Bharat and Net Zero” over February 9–10 at the Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, in the presence of senior officials from NITI Aayog, the agriculture sector and State Governments, followed by a panel discussion on “Climate Transition and Social Implications Across Sectors.” Three reports were unveiled on Day 1, four during the first session of Day 2, and the final four on the afternoon of February 10 in the presence of Dr. Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog; B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO, NITI Aayog; Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General, ICAR, along with a virtual address by Dr. V.K. Paul, Member, NITI Aayog. The concluding set of reports covering Buildings, Agriculture, Waste and Social Implications underscores that India’s journey to Net Zero must be people-centric, balancing climate goals with economic growth and livelihood protection. The Buildings report highlights that over 80 percent of the floor space projected for 2070 is yet to be built, making early interventions in design and materials crucial to avoid future energy inefficiencies and heat stress; the Agriculture report advocates a carefully sequenced transition beginning with resource efficiency to safeguard farmers’ incomes; the Waste report outlines a roadmap for emission reduction through circular economy measures including universal waste collection and waste-to-Bio-CNG conversion; while the Social Implications report examines impacts on land use, jobs and health, stressing the importance of a just and equitable transition.

(Cureus Journal of Agriculture and Food Science – CJAF)

New Delhi : Fisheries research institutes under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) are exploring the use of drone technology for a range of aquaculture-related activities. These include water sampling from difficult terrains, automated feed and medicine distribution, biomass estimation, and health monitoring in aquatic systems. The move is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and scientific precision in aquaculture practices.

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) is currently developing a prototype drone capable of transporting up to 70 kg of fish and shrimp from production centres to markets. This initiative is being undertaken as part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). In addition, a technical committee has been formed by the Department of Fisheries to establish standard operating procedures (SoPs) for drone applications in fisheries and aquaculture.

Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, George Kurian, informed the Rajya Sabha that PMMSY also promotes innovative technologies, startups, and pilot projects including the use of drones. Key activities such as surveillance, stock assessment, environmental monitoring, disease detection, and precision fishing fall under the scheme’s central sector components. With an investment of ₹20,050 crore across all states and Union Territories, PMMSY also includes social security measures like group accidental insurance for fishers, with premium contributions shared between the Centre and states.

The insurance coverage provided under the PMMSY includes Rs 5,00,000 against death or permanent total disability, Rs 2,50,000 for permanent partial disability, and hospitalization expenses in the event of accident for a sum of Rs 25,000. During the last three years (2022-23 to 2024-25) of the implementation of the PMMSY, the Central government has released a sum of Rs 54.03 crores for insurance coverage of 103.73 lakh fishers with an average of 34.57 lakh fishers annually, Kurian said.

In his keynote address, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Labour and Employment Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya ji said, “Meditation gives us stability, sustains us, shows direction for life. To be successful you need only two things 1. Study the lives of the successful people only these people can inspire us to be successful, learn from a successful man and channel your energies towards this. 2. Commitment and dedication. For Viksit Bharat, it is the responsibility of the both the Govt. and the youth in alignment with each other’s expectations. For Make in India projects and to support Startups we have built an ecosystem for research and development and international exposure. The Govt. of India will support the young researchers, startups, and help with loans for young startups. We have made a single-window platform ‘My Bharat’ platform in the last seven months and register with resume and access over 33 lakh Indian companies and international registered companies. This year’s budget is 100% youth-centric budget. The Govt. of India through PLI is making India ‘atma-nirbhar’. We were inspired during Covid lockdowns to make the APIs within in India through incentives for API manufacture within India. Youth must be enthusiastic and motivated and put the knowledge achieved for the development of the country with positivity. Workaholism and social service must be our thought-process. For the vision of the next 25 years for the country’s development, we are also aiming at bringing India to top 5 in the world in sports arena. We have created an ecosystem under the Keerti project for schools to empower students at schools to take up sports with international exposure as well and international participation.
Rev. Daaji – Guide of Heartfulness & President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission said in his address, “Rising with Kindness are the three very important words. What would be our lives like had it not been for kindness starting from our mother and family who spoilt us with all their love and kindness. Imagine our role in the lives of others. We can only embellish and make this existence glorious and worth living only if we are kind to each other and kind to oneself. Start by not hurting oneself. The ultimate purpose of life is to be happy as told by Lord Krishna himself. Happiness and consciousness are always related. To be happy, one must be at peace and for that harmony is required which can only be arrived at by remaining contemplative. A contemplative mind comes from and a focussed mind comes only through meditation. Mediation helps our mind go beyond the mind itself to overcome the dimension from which thoughts or inspiration descends. Kindness, love, compassion, courage are byproducts of tapping into the heart. Let’s contemplate on world with kindness, and world without kindness. With Kindness we rise. Without kindness we shatter. Emerge as the healthiest human race full of love and kindness.”

New Delhi, 29th August 2024 – Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL), a leading vaccine manufacturer, has announced partnership with Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai, an Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Institute for the commercial development of a recombinant monovalent viral nervous necrosis vaccine for finfish developed by CIBA.

IIL ventured into aqua business in October 2022 by launching products for aquaculture health market dealing with pond management and fish or shrimp gut management and subsequently announced commercial development of fish vaccines with ICAR’s CIFE, Mumbai and CIFA, Bhubaneswar. India is the 3rd largest fish producer in the global sphere and more than 65% of India’s fish is through Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture. The main constraint to aquaculture globally, however, is disease with an estimate that 20% of all cultured aquatic animals are lost because of infectious diseases, amounting to >10 billion USD in losses annually on a global scale.

Viral nervous necrosis (VNN) or viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) is an acute viral disease affecting several species of marine, brackishwater and freshwater fishes. The disease causes up to 100% mortality in larval and early juvenile stages. Adult fish when infected, is asymptomatic, but can transmit the virus to the offspring through eggs and gonadal fluids.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr K Anand Kumar, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Limited said, “IIL is the first in India to get to fish vaccines. We are covering different kind of fishes (fresh water, brackish water, etc.) and culture conditions (pond, cage culture, etc.) and are aware of the challenges associated with being the first, having been in similar situations for many other livestock vaccines. We are working at multiple fronts in defining pathways for commercial development of fish vaccines in India“.

Dr. Priyabrata Pattnaik, Deputy Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Limited added “IIL as a leading “One Health” organization is committed to developing vaccines for different fish pathogens with a long-term strategic objective of reducing use of antibiotics in aquaculture there by antimicrobial resistance in environment”.

Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA said “viral nervous necrosis is a major threat for brackishwater aquaculture. The VNN vaccine developed by CIBA can prevent vertical transmission of the disease to the offsprings and prevent mortality in fingerlings. The vaccine can play a significant role in controlling the loss due to VNN in India and other Asian countries”.

Aquaculture in India suffers economic losses due to infections caused by several bacterial, viral, fungal, and other aetiological agents. Currently these infections are being managed by anti-infectives and other conventional measures with varying degree of success. With the rising concern pertaining on anti-microbial resistance (AMR) and chemical free food products both at global and domestic platforms, there is a growing need for better control measures against these infections. Currently there is no fish vaccines available in India on a commercial scale to prevent aquaculture infections.
