Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray underwent an emergency surgery on Thursday morning after he developed blood clots that were compressing his spinal cord.

The chief minister, who is admitted on the 19th floor of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital since November 10, underwent his first surgery on November 12.

However, according to hospital sources, he developed issues and was taken in again for a surgery to remove the blood clots. The second surgery, which was performed in a special operating theatre on the 18th floor of the hospital, is said to be headed by Dr Shekhar Bhojraj, his spine surgeon, and Dr Ajit Desai, his cardiologist.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray underwent a cervical spine surgery Friday morning at HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai’s Girgaum. A press note issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said Thackeray is stable, quoting spine surgeon Dr Shekhar Bhojraj and the CM’s cardiologist Dr Ajit Desai. It added that he has been shifted to a room.

Dr Desai said, “He is absolutely stable and he will be discharged in three to four days. The surgery went on for nearly one and a half hours.”

CPSEs showed the way forward during Covid – DG, SCOPE

“Work From Home” has become “Work From Anywhere – Carry Your Hotspot” is the New Mantra for PR and Corporate Communicators.

New Delhi: “The Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) did tremendous work during the Covid19 pandemic through their initiatives ranging from supply of oxygen to hospitals, creation of infrastructure to supporting lakhs of migrants”, said Shri Atul Sobti, Director General of Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE). He was speaking at a webinar organized by ‘Public Relations Society Delhi’ on Saturday.

In his hour-long virtual interaction, he spoke passionately about “The role and contribution of CPSEs during the pandemic & the way forward for the Communication professionals” at the above event.

Elaborating upon how CPSE rose to the challenge of the pandemic SCOPE DG said “CPSEs are the real warriors. Many public sector workers lost their lives while serving the Nation. On 24 March 2020 when the first lockdown was announced, everyone was scared but CPSEs came forward and contributed close Rs. 2400 crore to PM Cares Fund, apart from CM Care Funds. The CPSEs provided infrastructure in the Hospitals, apart from providing masks, medical equipment, sanitizers, etc. Many CPSEs converted their facilities on war-footing and made them capable to supply medical-grade oxygen to every nook & corner of the country”

He spoke about how CPSEs are surrounded by many myths ranging from under performance to loss making. He highlighted some interesting facts and figures during the course of his interaction by saying that “During first Five Year Plan, there were only five CPSEs and today we have about 348 CPSEs, out of which 249 are operational. These CPSEs contribute 13% of India’s GDP, with a turnover of USD 363 billion. The combined contribution of India’s CPSEs is more than the combined contribution of 160 countries’ GDP put together. In coal sector, 92% of total work is done by the CPSEs; similarly, 51% in Power Sector, 83% in Natural Gas Sector, 37% in Fertilizer Sector. These are the published facts as given by DPE in the year 2018-19.”

He added, “CPSEs made profit of Rs 1.75 lac crores; against the common myth that CPSEs are loss-making, 178 out of 249 CPSE (75%) are profit- making. In USA alone, there are close to 7000 listed companies, only 38% are profit-making. In India’s stock exchanges, there are about 7400 companies, more than 50% are profit-making.”

Speaking about technological transformation took place during the pandemic, Mr. Sobti mentioned that “earlier people had not even heard of a Webinar and they were only used to attending conferences in auditoriums, but now everything has changed.”

On the emerging trends in corporate communications and usage of social media by CPSEs, he said, “Many CPSEs are still not using social media so frequently. At SCOPE, we started using Twitter and gradually moved to other social media. We asked every employee to have a Twitter Account for wide amplification and in no time we witnessed exponential growth. At the end of month of May, it crossed one lakh mark. All CPSEs have joined hands with us on social media, we were tagging them and they were retweeting it. Unfortunately, the strength of social media is still undermined by many CPSEs.”

About Public Relations Society Delhi, he said, “I am very happy to know that PRSD is doing good work for enhancing skills of PR professionals. It has a vision to get recognition of PR as a Profession to recon with. I would also like to give my wish best wishes to Shri SS Rao for taking over as Chairman, PRSD.”

Continuing about technological change, he said, “As against the physical format, SCOPE has now asked for online applications for its Eminence Awards. All recruitment applications are also being invited via online.”

When asked about how PR is evolving, he replied: “It has been there in one form or another since civilization began on earth. All the kings used to have services of messengers and the machinery used PR along with their work. Propaganda was used even during world war era. PR as a profession has been in existence over the past 75 years and has established it self over a period of time. It is basically a strategic communication with stakeholders for attracting goods, customers, employees, vendors, etc. But 80% of Corporate Communication includes event management, hospitality, logistics arrangement, publication, crisis communication etc.”

About technology disruptions, he said, “Time has changed, we can no longer follow the old methodology, even typing on computers is changing. Working from everywhere with hotspots is the new reality.”

Advising PR Professionals, he said, “As PR, you need to know that brevity is the key. Like in Twitter; Publication and Content, as two separate terms, are getting merged. In today’s time, Communication Professionals have to generate the content and publish it too. Earlier, Communication professionals were used only for internal communication but now they should have knowledge about both the internal and external communication strategies and tools. One has to be a custodian of all corporate-related information.”

To another question on ‘whether the stature of PR should be elevated to policy level, he replied, “Communication can play major role in meeting company’s objectives, positioning company internally and externally. Communicating with various agencies, helping in decision making, contributing towards healthy HR environment, effective administration, etc. I feel communication professionals are supposed to act as information custodians and as such, they shall guide management on what needs to be done. In organizations, we already have Chief Technical Officer, Chief HR Officer; similarly, there should be provision for Chief Communications Officer too.”

Mr. Sobti released SCOPE’s special issue of ‘KALEIDOSCOPE’ on its 40th anniversary. KALEIDOSCOPE is a monthly magazine published by SCOPE. DG, SCOPE also mentioned about the compendium which included the work undertaken by CPSEs during the Covid-19 released by Hon’ble Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises.

Shri G.S. Bawa, Secretary, PRSD hosted the Webinar while Chairman Shri SS Rao delivered the Welcome Address. Vote of Thanks was proposed by PRSD’s Governing Board Member Shri. Vipin Kharbanda.

Trump flown to military hospital

US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania have tested positive for the coronavirus and flown to military hospital for further treatment. the president tweeted on Friday, a development that is likely to bring to standstill his hectic election campaign.
Trump was flown to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after being given an experimental antibody treatment as the White House rushed to cope with a commander in chief infected by a virus that has killed more than 208,000 people in the United States. Officials said he would remain in the hospital for several days and canceled his upcoming campaign events.

The White House shrouded Trump’s condition in secrecy, saying little more than that he had “mild symptoms,” and officials characterized the hospital stay as a precautionary measure. But the normally voluble president remained almost entirely out of public view, skipped a telephone call with governors at the last minute and uncharacteristically stayed off Twitter nearly all day while people close to the situation said his fever and other symptoms worsened as the hours wore on.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER! 74-year-old Trump tweeted.

In a statement, Trump’s physician Dr. Sean Conley said he received confirmation of the positive tests on Thursday evening.

“The President and First Lady are both well “The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions,” Conley said.

Trump’s positive report comes just hours after his senior aide Hope Hicks was tested COVID-19 positive.

“Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for COVID-19. Terrible! The first lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process! Trump earlier said in tweet.

Hicks, 31, is the closest aid of the president to have tested positive with coronavirus. She had travelled with the president on Air Force One early this week.

Trump, in an interview to Fox News, on Thursday night said he and the first lady spend a lot of time with her.

In the middle of the election campaign, Trump has been travelling a lot in particular in the battleground States. The development is likely to bring to standstill his hectic campaign for the November 3 presidential election.

In a statement, Judd Deere, the Deputy White House Press Secretary said that the President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously.

White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is travelling,” Deere said earlier.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray urged retired healthcare workers to volunteer to help the government fight the global pandemic as cases in state crossed 1,000. ‘I am requesting retired nurses, ward boys, trained personnel and medical staff to help us. They can email us their names and contact information at Covidyoddha@gmail.com.’

Uddhav Thackeray begins briefing the state via social media on video on Wednesday. He said, ‘We held a Cabinet meeting yesterday via video conferencing. I am constantly in touch with all ministers. This is teamwork.’

Meanwhile The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has written to states to take urgent steps to ensure the availability of essential goods, and invoke provisions of the Essential Commodities (EC) Act, 1955, if needed, against hoarders.

Five people died of coronavirus in Pune in the last 12 hours, taking the COVID-19 toll in the Maharashtra district to 13, officials said on Wednesday.

With 1,018 cases of COVID-19, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of infections, followed by Tamil Nadu (690) and Delhi (576).

The total number of coronavirus positive cases in India has risen to 5,194 , which includes 4,643 active cases and 401 cured/discharged people. The toll is now at 149. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will hold a video meet with Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi at 12 noon.

Two more people died of coronavirus infection in Pune, taking the toll in the Maharashtra district to 10, officials said on Wednesday. A 44-year-old man, who was on ventilator support and suffering from uncontrolled diabetes, died at the civic-run Naidu Hospital early Wednesday morning, Pune Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said.

several states also announced plans to ramp up their testing infrastructure and put in place strong ‘cluster containment’ plans in areas identified as hotspots of the outbreak.

There were also indications about possible relaxations from a complete lockdown for some sectors, including agriculture and unorganised labour sector, at least in some states, while there were also talks about even stronger area-specific restrictions in some places.

A Group of Ministers on COVID-19, recommended extension of closure of all educational institutions and restricting all religious activities having public participation till 15 May irrespective of whether the government extends the 21-day lockdown or not.

64 year old patient who had travelled to Dubai was tested positive last week died this morning after complications. His son and wife both tested positive and both are currently undergoing treatment. This is the third death in the country linked to coronavirus or COVID-19, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation last week.

The woman was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, said officials.

The death in Maharashtra comes as number of COVID-19 cases rose to 125 in India. Last week two people – a 68-year-old woman in Delhi and a 76-year-old woman in Karnataka – died. Both the deaths were linked to COVID-19, which originated in China’s Wuhan city at a meat market in December.

Amid widespread scare, the centre on Monday declared a countrywide lockdown of schools, colleges, gyms and swimming pools — crowded areas that could allow for exponential spread of the virus. The government had last week declared the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country a “notified disaster”, in a move it called “a special one-time dispensation”.

In Maharashtra, the state government said it would “stamp” all those who have been sent to home quarantine as the number of cases climbed to 39.

Worldwide, over 7,000 people have died, more than one lakh has been infected in 143 countries. The WHO last week declared Europe as the epicentre of the pandemic.

On Monday, nearly 14,000 people were infected with the novel coronavirus globally – largest in a single day – bringing the total number of confirmed cases above 167,500, said the WHO.

The death toll from China’s coronavirus epidemic climbed to 1,868 today as 98 more people died while the total number of confirmed cases jumped to 72,436, officials said. Of the new deaths, 93 were reported from Hubei Province, the epicentre of the virus, three from Henan, and one each from Hebei and Hunan, said the National Health Commission.

Hubei reported 1,807 new confirmed cases, taking the total number of such cases to 59,989 in the province. Another 1,432 new suspected cases were reported from the rest of China.

On Monday, 1,097 patients became seriously ill and 11,741 patients remained in severe condition, the commission said. Of the 41,957 patients hospitalised in Hubei, 9,117 were still in severe condition and another 1,853 in critical condition, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The province also saw 1,223 patients discharged from hospital after recovery on Monday, bringing the total number of discharged patients in the province to 7,862. A total of 12,552 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery across China so far, it said.

In view of human-to-human transmission of the disease, over 1.41 lakh people who have come in contact with the people who contracted the virus are still under medical observation, it said.

By Monday, 60 confirmed cases, including one death, had been reported in Hong Kong 10 confirmed cases in Macao and 22 in Taiwan, including one death.

Top World Health Organisation experts, including from the US, have joined the fight against the virus, called COVID-19, in China. China confirmed that the 12-member WHO team includes Americans, as sought by the US.

“The foreign experts on board the China-WHO Joint Mission have arrived in Beijing. They have started relevant activities. We have experts from the US in the mission,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told media.

NHC said China has stepped up efforts to shore up weak spots as the epidemic prevention and control have entered the most crucial stage. “Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, remains the main battlefield,” Wang Hesheng, deputy head of NHC, said. “Improving admission and survival rates and reducing infection and fatality rates are still the most urgent tasks.”

Nine temporary hospitals with more than 6,960 beds have opened in Hubei. As of February 14, a total of 217 medical teams with 25,633 medical workers had been sent to Hubei, the Xinhua report said.

The WHO on Monday warned against “blanket measures” over the novel coronavirus outbreak, pointing out the epidemic outside of China was only affecting a “tiny” proportion of the population.

WHO also said that with a mortality rate of around 2 per cent, COVID-19 was “less deadly” than other coronaviruses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). WHO officials rejected the suggestion that all cruises should be halted to avoid risking a new nest of infection like the one on the coronavirus-hit Diamond Princess off Japan.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Sunday after she complained of a stomach ache and nausea.

Sources said the 73-year-old was taken to the hospital at around 7 in the evening. Her children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also visited her there.

“There is nothing to worry about. She is undergoing a few tests. Based on the results, a decision will be taken whether to discharge her or keep her in the hospital until she recovers fully,” said a source. He added that the stomach ache could be due to an infection. The hospital has been Gandhi’s go-to hospital for any health issue. She has been admitted to the hospital several times over the past few years for regular health check-ups and once, in 2017, she was admitted there for shoulder surgery, said a senior doctor.

She did not attend Union Budget presentation in Parliament on Saturday. She had attended the first day of the Budget session on Friday and had led the party’s protests against Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Parliament.

Jaitley was admitted in the country’s premier medical institution on August 9 morning and was put on ventilator late in the night. He has since been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).

According to a release by media and protocol division of AIIMS on the same day, the former minister is under the supervision of a team comprising multidisciplinary doctors, “At present he is haemodynamically stable”. The hospital has not issued any medical bulletin after August 9 on Jaitley’s health.
