HomeScapes’ study reveals differences in perspectives on cooking and dining

Bengaluru, July 24, 2024 – Interio, a leading home and office furniture business entity of Godrej & Boyce, part of the Godrej Enterprises Group, has unveiled fascinating insights into India’s culinary habits and kitchen dynamics through its latest ‘HomeScapes’ survey. The survey highlights intriguing city-specific trends, with Chennai and Lucknow emerging as the top havens for home foodies.

The survey reveals that nearly one in three respondents in Lucknow 31% and 28% in Chennai consider their kitchens and dining rooms as the primary spaces for food experimentation. This trend aligns with the growing preference for homemade, authentic, from-scratch masalas and condiments, as predicted in the Godrej Food Trends Report 2024. A significant portion of respondents express a desire to revive family cooking traditions. In Lucknow and Chennai, 41% and 37% of respondents respectively consider it essential to revive the routine of cooking with family and sharing secret recipes. Hyderabad shows the strongest inclination towards this trend, with 70% of respondents eager to inculcate this habit.

Hyderabad leads in embracing open kitchen concepts, with 73% of respondents believing it makes cooking and dining more participative. Chennai and Lucknow also show strong support for this trend, with 59% and 54% of respondents respectively favoring the idea. Interestingly, Chennai and Lucknow demonstrate their culinary engagement in different ways, particularly at the dining table. In these cities, 60% of Chennai respondents and 53% in Lucknow enjoy light-hearted debates about seating arrangements, adding a playful element to family meals. Hyderabad, while leading in kitchen design preferences, shows a different dynamic at the table, with 36% of respondents participating in such mealtime interactions.

Kolkata presents an intriguing contrast. While the proportion of home foodies (24%) is close to the national average (25%), the city shows the lowest engagement in both cooking and dining activities. A striking 83% of Kolkata respondents prefer separate kitchens to maintain presentable living spaces.

Commenting on these findings, Swapneel Nagarkar, Senior Vice President & Business Head, Godrej Interio, said, “The ‘HomeScapes’ research highlights the profound emotional bond individuals share with their kitchens and dining spaces.

Bengaluru, June 20, 2024 – Godrej Interio, a leading home and office furniture business entity of Godrej & Boyce, has unveiled interesting insights into how residents in India’s major cities unwind at home. The survey, titled “HomeScapes,” reveals some fascinating city-specific trends, with Chennai emerging as the undisputed binge-watching champion.

The study found that a significant 50% of respondents in Chennai consider themselves “serial binge-watchers,” always on the lookout for their next multi-episode marathon. This passion for streaming content echoes a 2014 report that highlighted Chennai’s longstanding love affair with television, with residents dedicating considerably more time to watching TV compared to other metros. For them, home is the ultimate sanctuary for binge-watching marathons where watching up to 10 episodes in one go is not uncommon. The survey further also reveals that around 71% of Chennaiites cherish ‘movie night’ as a beloved tradition that should be revived and passed on to future generations. This strong nostalgia underscores the city’s deep-rooted love for family entertainment.

Commenting on the trend Swapneel Nagarkar, Senior Vice President & Business Head, Godrej Interio, said “The ‘Homescapes’ research highlights the profound emotional bond individuals share with their families and homes. As we delve into the insights from our ‘HomeScapes’ survey, it is observed that the way we unwind has evolved over the years. The survey highlights the pattern of individuals who binge watch across various cities in India. Observing this changing behaviour of our consumers, we at Godrej Interio recognize the importance of creating comfortable and functional spaces that cater to these evolving habits, ensuring homes remain the heart of entertainment and relaxation. This commitment to functionality goes beyond aesthetics. At Godrej Interio, we take pride in creating furniture that offers features ailored to complement the modern Indian lifestyle. Our furniture becomes an integral part of one’s home and lifestyle, embodying both style and practicality. This knowledge allows us to design furniture that perfectly complements the modern lifestyle of our customers.”

Additionally, the survey highlights that Hyderabad follows closely where 34% respondents identify themselves as binge-watchers at home and a significant 70% of Hyderabad residents also support the revival of ‘movie night’. Contradictory to respondents from Chennai and Hyderabad, Mumbaikars have displayed a different pattern while less than half the respondents (47%) agree on the importance of reviving ‘movie night’ and only 12% consider themselves Serial ‘Binge-watchers’. In contrast, Lucknow respondents exhibit a reversed trend where only 20% are interested in reviving ‘movie night’ while 28% embrace the persona of a Serial ‘Binge-watcher’, highlighting a distinctive entertainment preference.

The survey was conducted with 2822 Indians living across 7 cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Lucknow.
