Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu

Heavy rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu, including capital city Chennai and Thoothukodi, since Thursday. Following the continuous rainfall, 24 districts administrations have announced leave to educational institutions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Chennai on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Puducherry, all schools and colleges will be closed on Friday and Saturday due to heavy rains, Minister of Education A Namassivayam said in a statement.

In Thoothukodi, Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple was fully inundated and Ramanathapuram district, too, has been receiving heavy downpour.

Ramanathapuram District Collector held a meeting of officials of various departments and the situation of low-lying areas of the district including Paramakudi, and R.S. Mangalam are being constantly monitored by Revenue and Disaster management authorities.

Tourism officials of the district said that since the arrival of northeast monsoon and heavy rains, the flow of pilgrims to the temple town of Rameswaram has taken a beating.

Ramanathapuram district administration has opened a special control room and helpline numbers to the public for any assistance and public can contact helpline number 1077.

Rameswaram recorded 76.20mm rainfall, Pamban 42.10 mm, and Thangachimadam 30.50 mm rains.

Thunderstorms with heavy rains are likely to occur at isolated places over Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi districts and thunderstorm with moderate rains is likely in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Cuddalore on Friday.

The IMD had forcast a cyclonic circulation lies over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and rainfall in different parts of the southern states for the next five days. The cyclonic circulation lies over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, an IMD press release said.

“Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area is likely to form over southwest Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours. It is likely to move west north westwards towards Sri Lanka and south Tamil Nadu coast,” it added.

A cyclonic circulation persists over the central part of south Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, the IMD said in its bulletin.

A low-pressure area is likely to develop over southwest Bay of Bengal over the next 24 hours under the influence of the cyclonic circulation. The weather system is likely to move west-northwest towards south Tamil Nadu coast and Sri Lanka, the IMD said in the bulletin.

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu have been battered by heavy rainfall over the past week.

NDRF prepared for Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR

NDRF prepared for Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR

Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR” is centred about 380 km East-Southeast of Puducherry and 430 km Southeast of Chennai. Cyclone “NIVAR” is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours and is very likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry during late evening of 25th November, as a severe cyclonic storm, with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph.

A close watch is being kept over the system. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) HQ and Commandants of battalions located at Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are in coordination with the respective state authorities. In view of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast and requirements projected by the state authorities, 22 teams (12 teams in Tamil Nadu, 03 teams in Puducherry and 07 teams in Andhra Pradesh) have been pre-positioned at likely affected areas. Teams have been kept reserve at Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Thrissur (Kerala) and Mundli (Odisha) to meet additional requirements.

All teams have reliable wireless and satellite communications, tree cutters/ pole cutters for post landfall restoration, if need arises. In view of the current COVID-19 scenario, NDRF teams are equipped with appropriate PPEs.

NDRF is working in close coordination with district and local administrations. Awareness programmes are being conducted for all citizens in the form of information about cyclones, do’s and don’ts and information about COVID-19 in affected areas and prevention measures. All deployed teams are assisting the local administration in evacuation of people from areas that are likely to be affected by the cyclone. NDRF is spreading a sense of security amongst the communities that teams are available at their service and will remain present in the area until the situation returns to normal, so that the public does not panic.

Heavy rains in Mumbai

Heavy rainfall has been reported in Mumbai and its suburbs leading to waterlogged roads in several areas even as the Indian Meteorological Department predicted intermittent intense showers in the region over the next few days.

Several vehicles were seen wading through knee deep water on Mumbai roads, while a tree fell on a car in Navi Mumbai.

Several parts of the Mumbai city had witnessed water logging even on Sunday troubling commuters. Similar scenes were seen in Navi Mumbai areas on Tuesday.

According to the IMD’s forecast for its Worli station, moderate rains are expected in the area with the sky remaining generally cloudy through the day. A minimum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius has been predicted for tomorrow. It projects persistent rains in the city beginning July 12.

The forecast by Mumbai Santacruz station predicts moderate rain in nearby areas with skies remaining cloudy through the day. The temperatures are likely to remain between 26 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. Moderate rains are likely to continue till July 11.

The Santacruz weather station reported 30.2 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours while the Colaba bureau recorded 13.4 mm rainfall during the same period.

IMD issuing a yellow alert has said that due to the active monsoon conditions, the entire Konkan coast including Mumbai is experiencing an intense spell of rainfall.

A press release by the IMD said that “Monsoon remained widespread active over the entire Konkan belt, including Mumbai with heavy to very heavy rainfall over many places and has isolated extremely heavy falls.
It also added that “Ghat areas of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra also received heavy to rainfall at isolated places. Moderate rain very likely in the city and suburbs. Possibility of heavy falls at isolated places for the next 48 hours”.

Earlier Mumbai and its nearby districts were hit by heavy rains for the third consecutive day, resulting in water logging in several low-lying areas of the city. In the morning the Powai lake started overflowing in the morning after the heavy downpour, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC)said.

In Several Mumbai areas, water-logging reported such as Chembur, Wadala, Dharavi, Andheri,Khar Subway, Milan Subway, and Dahisar Subway.

The Matheran hill station in neighbouring Raigad district, too, received 93.4 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, while the Thane-Belapur Industries Association observatory recorded 74 mm rainfall during the period, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Heavy rains likely next 3 days

The National Weather Forecasting Centre/Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said:

The Western end of the monsoon trough at mean sea level is near its normal position and eastern end is north of its normal position and extends upto 1.5 km above mean sea level. A cyclonic circulation lies over North Chhattisgarh & neighbourhood between 3.1 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level.

Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls very likely to continue over East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal & Sikkim and northeastern states during next 5 days. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls is also likely over East Uttar Pradesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on 2nd & 3rd July, 2020.

Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall very likely over central & adjoining east India during next 3 days and increase in intensity & distribution thereafter. Isolated heavy falls also very likely over Madhya Pradesh during next 3 days and isolated heavy to very heavy falls thereafter; isolated heavy falls over Chhattisgarh during next 5 days; over Bihar & Vidarbha from 1st to 4th July and heavy to very heavy at isolated places over Odisha from 2nd to 4th July, 2020.

Widespread rainfall activity very likely to continue along the west coast during next 5 days. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls is also very likely over Konkan & Goa during next 5 days; Isolated heavy falls very likely over Coastal Karnataka during next 3 days and isolated heavy to very heavy falls thereafter and heavy falls over Kerala during next 5 days.

Subdued rainfall activity over Western Himalayan Region and adjoining northwest India very likely to continue during next 3 days and its distribution & intensity very likely to increase thereafter.

Delhi, Haryana Likely To Receive Heavy Rainfall Today

Heavy rainfall is likely to lash Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh today.

The weather forecasting agency said isolated places over Konkan, Goa, West Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan and Gangetic West Bengal are also expected to witness incessant rains later in the day.

In Uttar Pradesh, the IMD said rain/thundershowers and lightning are very likely to occur in the next three hours at isolated places over Jhansi, Jalaun, Rampur, Bareilly, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, Moradabad districts and adjoining areas.

Intense spells of rain are very likely to occur in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Nashik in the next four hours, the forecaster observed.

Northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to witness heavy spells of rain until July 27.

“By July 29, the Monsoon Trough will once again start shifting to North that would lead to the revival of Monsoon activities over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. Hence, we can say that the northeastern states will continue to witness good rain and thundershowers for the rest of July,” said Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency.

Strong winds of speed hovering around 40-50 kmph are likely to prevail over southwest and the west-central Arabian Sea. Rough to very rough sea conditions are very likely to prevail along and off south Tamil Nadu coast, it added.
