Kolkata, 20 May, 2026: Yet another glorious chapter was added to the rich annals of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd on Wednesday, 20 May 26, with the launch of the first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV). The shipyard is building four NGOPVs for the Navy.
The warship, named Sanghmitra, was launched by Smt. Sarita Vatsayan, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, PVSM, AVSM, NM, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy, amidst rituals & chanting of shlokas. Vice Admiral Vatsayan was the Chief Guest at the occasion.

The name Sanghmitra means friend of the community. It was also the name of the eldest daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who is known to have travelled to Sri Lanka in the 3rd Century BC to spread the teachings of Lord Buddha.

The others present at the occasion were senior officials from GRSE and the Indian Navy.
GRSE has significant experience in the construction of warships and patrol vessels for maritime operations. The shipyard also built the OPV MCGS Barracuda, the first warship exported by India to Mauritius in 2014. GRSE bagged the Defence Minister’s Award of Excellence for in-house Design Effort for that warship. The launch of this ship is on the heels of a successful year for GRSE, having delivered eight ships in a single year, including simultaneous delivery of three warships of different classes – the P17A stealth frigate, a Survey Vessel large and an ASW Shallow water craft – on a single day, 30 Mar 26.

The NGOPVs will be much larger warships than the OPVs built earlier, and have greater endurance and firepower. These platforms will be about 113 metres long and 14.6 metres wide, with a displacement of 3,000 Tons. The NGOPVs will achieve speeds of up to 23 knots. Their endurance will be 8,500 nautical miles at a speed of 14 knots.

The NGOPVs will play a variety of roles. With a draught requirement of only 4 metres, they would be able to operate in coastal waters, protecting offshore assets, carrying out maritime interdiction, as well as visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) operations. They will also be part of presence-cum-surveillance and mine warfare missions while having the capability to support special operations.

These warships will also participate in ‘Out of Area’ Contingency Operations, non-combatant evacuation, convoy operations, anti-piracy missions and counter-infiltration operations. Apart from these, they will take on poachers and traffickers, and participate in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief as well as search and rescue missions. They will also be able to operate as hospital and COMINT ships apart from providing fleet maintenance support.

Vice Admiral Vatsayan commended GRSE’s role in keeping the Navy supplied with advanced warships. “Over the years, the Indian Navy has evolved into a force that is not only prepared for conflicts but equally committed to shaping the stable maritime environment through cooperation, presence and readiness. In this broader context, the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel project holds considerable significance. I would like to convey my appreciation to GRSE, which has consistently demonstrated its capability in delivering quality platforms to the Indian Navy, having delivered eight ships in the last financial year. Today’s launch adds another important chapter to its legacy,” he said.

Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE, highlighted the technological advances that the shipyard has made adding to enhanced capabilities. “We are kickstarting 2026-27 with the launch of this vessel and this year too will see multiple launches and deliveries”, he said.

Kolkata (January 15, 2026): Reinforcing its commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and indigenous shipbuilding, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., took a significant leap in digital ship design and construction by inaugurating its Next Generation Virtual Reality (NGVR) Lab on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Main Works Unit, Kolkata. The state-of-the-art facility marks a major step towards enhancing self-reliant, technology-driven warship design and production capabilities in the country.

The Next Generation VR Lab was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, AVSM, NM, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition (CWP&A), Indian Navy. Among those present were Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, Capt (IN) P Sunilkumar (Retd), Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel), GRSE, Shri Niranjan Bhalerao, Director (Finance), GRSE and other senior officials from Indian Navy & GRSE.

GRSE already had a VR Lab since 2018, and with technological advances being made in the field of ship design and digital shipbuilding, GRSE made the move to upgrade the existing facility into a next generation VR Lab. This is part of the shipyard’s continuing effort to remain future-ready and build modern, state-of-the-art platforms as per the requirements of Indian Navy, Indian Coastguard and friendly foreign countries.
The new facility enables immersive, true 1:1 scale visualization of ship designs, allowing stakeholders to experience compartments, systems, and workflows with unmatched clarity, transforming traditional design review into an intelligent, data-driven process.

At the heart of this NGVR Lab lies a continuously evolving Digital Twin, seamlessly synchronized with design, engineering, and construction data. While physical construction of a ship is underway, this digital twin enables real-time validation of layouts, equipment installation, accessibility, maintainability, and safety throughout the ship’s lifecycle — from concept design to construction and future upgrades.
Augmented Reality (AR) integration extends the digital twin onto the shop floor by superimposing virtual ship models onto physical structures, guiding construction, inspection, and alignment activities, and ensuring faithful realization of design intent during execution.

Overall, the Next Generation VR Lab at GRSE represents a future-ready convergence of immersive visualization, digital twin technology, and integrated construction technology—driving enhanced design accuracy, improved build quality, reduced cycle time, and informed decision-making across the shipbuilding production.

The new CRVs will play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s maritime research infrastructure by enabling advanced studies on seabed geology, oceanic resources, and environmental sustainability. Designed to support real-time analyses and long-duration research missions, the vessels will empower Indian scientists with enhanced capabilities for offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration, ocean environment monitoring, and shipboard scientific analysis.

Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) brings decades of engineering excellence to the maritime sector, delivering advanced vessels designed to meet specialized needs. One of the key milestones has been the successful construction and delivery of Coastal Research Vessels for the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), supporting vital oceanographic and scientific missions. Notably, this vessel was showcased at the 12th Presidential Fleet Review—an exceptional honor, as it is rare for a non-defense ship to participate in such a prestigious event. Building on this proud legacy, TRSL continues to reinforce its reputation as a trusted partner in India’s shipbuilding and maritime innovation sector.

Commenting on this milestone order, Shri Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, said: “We are honoured to partner with GRSE in delivering these highly specialized Coastal Research Vessels for the Geological Survey of India. This contract is yet another testament to Titagarh’s strong relationship with GRSE through construction and delivery of strategic asset like ICGS Kamla Devi (FPV) and inter government cooperation project MV Ma Lisha (Cargo RoPax) for Cooperative Republic of Guyana, these projects reflect our joint commitment to strengthening the nation’s maritime infrastructure through close collaboration. This order also stands as a testimony to the trust placed in our shipbuilding and maritime systems capabilities, reaffirming our commitment to delivering world-class vessels that advance India’s strategic priorities in maritime research as well as sustainability. TRSL has a proven track record, having successfully delivered 35+ vessels, further underscoring our capability in delivering complex maritime assets. As a trusted Indian brand, we take great pride in contributing to the Government’s vision of Maritime Infrastructure Development to boost India’s domestic shipbuilding and maritime ecosystem. In alignment with the Government’s shipbuilding initiatives such as the National Shipbuilding Mission, Maritime Development Fund (MDF), and the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy, Titagarh remains committed to supporting the PM’s vision of positioning India as a global shipbuilding hub. Through innovation, skill development, and self-reliance, we aim to drive economic growth while contributing to the strengthening of the nation’s maritime research ecosystem.”

Each CRV is being constructed to operate within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in depths ranging from 5 to 1000 meters. Built with a service life of 30 years, the vessels will comply with all Indian and international maritime standards, the ships will be equipped with eco-friendly electric propulsion systems, 360-degree rotatable thrusters, and DP1 dynamic positioning technology to ensure safe, smooth, and precise manoeuvring at sea. Onboard, the CRVs will house 22 types of advanced scientific equipment within three modern laboratories, offering state-of-the-art facilities for data processing and sample analysis.

Beyond scientific infrastructure, the vessels are also designed to provide a supportive environment for life at sea. Spacious and ergonomic accommodation, along with well-designed recreation facilities, will ensure a comfortable living and working experience for scientists and crew, allowing them to focus on their critical missions.

This landmark contract marks a defining achievement for TRSL’s SMS Division and underscores the company’s growing role as a trusted partner in advancing India’s shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure sector.
