US coronavirus death toll rises past 3,000

The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus pandemic climbed past 3,000 on Monday, the deadliest day yet in the country’s mounting crisis, while New York cheered the arrival of a gleaming 1,000-bed U.S. Navy hospital ship as a sign of hope in the city’s desperate fight.

In a grim new milestones marking the spread of the virus, total deaths across the United States hit 3,017, including at least 540 on Monday, and the reported cases climbed to more than 163,000, according to a Reuters tally.

People in New York and New Jersey lined both sides of the Hudson River to cheer the U.S Navy ship Comfort, a converted oil tanker painted white with giant red crosses, as it sailed past the Statue of Liberty accompanied by support ships and helicopters.

The Comfort will treat non-coronavirus patients, including those who require surgery and critical care, in an effort to free up other resources to fight the virus, the Navy said.

It’s a wartime atmosphere and we all have to pull together,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was among the dignitaries to greet the ship’s arrival at the Midtown Manhattan pier.

Hospitals in the New York City area have been overrun with patients suffering from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus. Officials have appealed for volunteer healthcare workers.

“We can’t take of you if we can’t take care of ourselves,” said Krystal Horchuck, a nurse with Virtua Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. “I think a lot of us have accepted the fact that we are probably going to get this. It’s just that we want to survive. We’re all being exposed to it at some point.”

President Donald Trump told a White House briefing that more than 1 million Americans had been tested for coronavirus – less than 3% of the population. While the United States has ramped up testing after a series of setbacks, it still lags countries like Italy and South Korea on a per capita basis.

Good Newwz Box Office Collection Day 6: Rs 117 Crore

Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor’s new film Good Newwz wrapped 2019 on a good note and began the New Year on an even better one. In six days, the comedy has soared past the Rs 100 crore mark, scoring Rs 117 at the box office, said trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

On the New Year holiday on Wednesday, Good Newwz raked in as much as Rs 22 crore, pushing the total to an impressive figure. The film had made almost Rs 50 crore over the weekend. “Good Newwz is 100 not out… Hits the ball out of the park on Day 6… Ends 2019 with ‘good newwz‘… Begins 2020 with ‘good newwz‘… Fri 17.56 cr, Sat 21.78 cr, Sun 25.65 cr, Mon 13.41 cr, Tue 16.20 cr, Wed 22.50 cr. Total: Rs 117.10 cr. India biz,” Mr Adarsh wrote.

Last Friday, Good Newwz joined Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3 at the box office and took over the race. Looks like Good Newwz will have an uninterrupted run in the theatre with no major releases till Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak and Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji on January 10.

Good Newwz opened to mixed reviews last Friday. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote: “… With Kareena plunging headlong into the madness that the plot rustles up and not holding back a whit, one can watch the film without worrying too much about the wobbles that tend to mar the ride. Akshay, shedding his patriotic change agent garb for once, makes the most of the bearable lightness of the plot.”

Good Newwz also stars Kiara Advani and Diljit Dosanjh.

Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor’s film ‘Good News’ (Good Newwz) is like good news for the audience. Not only is the comedy the director Raj Mehta has also given an emotional touch to the film. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani in the lead roles.

The film will not let you get bored till the end. After giving a great film like ‘Kesari’ in ‘Housefull 4’ where Akshay Kumar was not seen acting routine. Akshay Kumar also did comedy in this film in a seductive manner. He is seen doing absolutely natural acting in the film. At the same time, Kareena Kapoor has also presented the pain of not being a mother for 7 years of marriage on the screen. Diljit and Kiara definitely got a little less time than Akshay-Kareena on screen, but in many scenes both the viewers will get tickled. By the way, it is said for Akshay Kumar that when he is on screen, the adjacent actor is not seen, but in this film, Diljit Dosanjh was also seen making a place in his presence. In the life of Kareena and Akshay, Diljit and Kiara enter as uninvited guests. This latter situation is full of comedy, with emotional touch the director has kept the audience connected to the story. The editing of the film is very tight. The story does not seem to have drawn you anywhere. The film keeps it tied from beginning to end. The theme of the film is quite serious, but the way the director introduced the story with the help of comedy, it is clan-compliant, because often the directors do not escape from the stupidity on such subjects.
