Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, which made its poll debut in the state, has registered a vote share of over five per cent. The Aam Aadmi Party registered a vote share of a little over six per cent.

Panaji constituency, BJP leader Atanasio Monserrate defeated Utpal Parrikar by 716 votes. son of Manohar Parrikar, chose to contest the polls as an Independent candidate after he was not given the BJP ticket from the constituency.

While Atanasio Monserrate won 6,787 votes as per the Election Commission website, Utpal Parrikar got 6,071 votes.

On Thursday afternoon, ANI news agency quoted Atanasio Monserrate as saying that the BJP cadre worked for the Opposition candidate instead of him.

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) reached the half-way mark in the 40-member Goa assembly- just one short away from a majority. Yet it is in a comfortable position to form a government but in coalition for the third consecutive term in the state. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) has already announced its support to the BJP.

Most of the schools reported good attendance in the morning, state education director Bhushan Savaikar told news persons.

The educational institutions have been asked to strictly follow the standard operating procedures and COVID-19 appropriate behaviour, he said.

The schools in the coastal state had moved to the online mode after the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.

On Monday, the schools resumed offline sessions for Classes 1 to 12 as well as the pre-primary ones, Sawaikar said.

There is enthusiasm among students as they are returning to physical classes after such a gap, he said.

In the wake of a decline in COVID-19 cases in Goa, the state education department had last week issued a circular for the resumption of offline classes from Monday.

The education department had also instructed schools to conduct the exams in offline mode only and not to make uniforms mandatory for students.

It had also said that timing concession, if required, may be given to students in initial days.

On Sunday, Goa reported 40 new COVID-19 cases and three fatalities, raising the infection tally in the state to 2,44,713 and the death toll to 3,792, as per official figures.

All major political parties contesting the February 14 Goa Assembly elections, including BJP, Congress, AAP and TMC, have promised resumption of mining operations in the state, but voters feel that the assurance may not see the light of day as the issue has been raised just with an eye on polls and will be forgotten after that.

The mining industry, which used to be one of the major sources of revenue for Goa, had come to a grinding halt in the state in March 2018 after the Supreme Court quashed 88 mining leases.

The Goa government has roped in State Bank of India to help it auction leases for  eight” mining blockship its newly created mineral development corporation, chief minister Pramod Sawant announced on Wednesday after a meeting of the state cabinet.

Sawant said the auctions were likely to take place in December and besides the State Bank of India, the Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) was helping in identifying the leases to be auctioned.

“The cabinet has given approval to MECL for assessment of mineral ore for phase one of the auction. We are auctioning around six to eight blocks. …they are exploring which blocks will be eventually selected. After that auctioning will be conducted by the State Bank of India,” Sawant told reporters.

Iron Ore mining in Goa has remained suspended since March 16, 2018 after 88 mining leases renewed by the Goa government across 2014-15 were rendered defunct and cancelled by a Supreme Court order in February 2018. The mining industry was a major revenue and employment generator for the state and at its peak contributed close to 15% of the state’s GDP
