Priyanka accuses UP govt of playing politics

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s said the Uttar Pradesh government has demanded that the 1,000 buses the party wants to ply for ferrying migrant labourers back to the state be handed over in Lucknow this morning and alleged that the move is politically motivated.

It also alleged that the demand shows that the UP government lacks the intention to help those stranded at the state’s borders.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday had accepted the Congress’ offer to run 1,000 buses to bring migrant labourers back to the state, a proposal which had triggered a war of words between the two sides.

In a letter to Additional Chief Secretary Avneesh Kumar Awasthi, Priyanka Gandhi’s private secretary Sandeep Singh said a letter was received from the UP official at 11.40 pm Monday night via email, in which it has been stated that 1,000 buses with all documents be handed over at Lucknow by 10 am on Tuesday.

“In a situation when thousands of workers are walking on the streets and thousands of people have gathered at the UP borders at various registration centres, sending 1,000 empty buses to Lucknow is not only a waste of time and resources but is also inhuman and the product of an anti-poor mindset,” Singh said in the letter in Hindi.

“This demand of your government seems politically motivated. It does not seem that your government wants to help our labourer brothers and sisters who are facing a disaster,” the letter said.

“In the letter dated May 16, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has sought permission to run 500 buses from Ghazipur border in Ghaziabad and 500 buses from Noida border to help the stranded migrant labourers reach home. In this context, at 4.01 pm (on May 18), I got your letter (through WhatsApp) seeking list of 1,000 buses along with details of drivers and conductors. This was provided to you after sometime through email,” it said.

The state government had asked Priyanka Gandhi, who had made the offer, to provide it with a list of buses along with the names of their drivers and conductors.

“Kindly provide complete details of all the buses along with their fitness certificates, driving licences of drivers and details of the conductors to District Magistrate Lucknow at Sector 15-16 Vrindawan Yojana. The District Magistrate has been informed about this,” Awasthi had said in a letter.

Delhi: 19 Metro Stations Shut, Commuters Suffer

Commuting in the city on Friday turned into a nightmare for many as arterial roads and metro stations were closed due to security reasons. In the wake of the violent protests in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi Police did not want to take any risk and it shut down major roads connecting Noida and Ghaziabad.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) barred entry-exit at 19 stations, including Rajiv Chowk, to restrict the movement of those protesting against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act. Seven metro stations were shut through the day due to the protests at Jama Masjid and India Gate.

Chandni Chowk was the latest station to be closed even as commuters faced inconvenience during the peak evening hours. At about 6 pm, the DMRC tweeted “Entry & exit gates of Closed. Trains will not be halting at this station.”

Earlier, the DMRC had tweeted about the closure of Kashmere Gate Station. But later, gate no. 3 and gate no. 4 were opened. Interchange facility was available at Rajiv Chowk, where entry and exit gates were closed.

“Entry & exit gates of Mandi House and Janpath are closed. . Interchange facility is available at Mandi House,” the DMRC had said in a tweet. Entry and exit gates of Pragati Maidan, Khan Market, Johri Enclave, Shiv Vihar, Central Secretariat and Dilshad Garden stations were also closed.

“Of the 285 stations, Chawri Bazar, Lal Quila, Jama Masjid & Delhi Gate on Violet line, Jaffrabad & Maujpur-Babarpur on Pink line and Jamia Millia Islamia on Magenta line are closed as per instructions of security agencies. Rest of the metro network is operating as per schedule,” the Delhi Metro tweeted.

During the protests, the cops had to close the Netaji Subhash Marg and partially shut the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to prevent protesters from advancing towards the Jantar Mantar. The closure went on till late evening when the violence broke out. Vehicles were, however, diverted through the Rajghat-Ambedkar stadium stretch from the BSZ Marg.

The Okhla Marg starting from Sukhdev Vihar, too, was closed in view of the Jamia protests. The traffic near the India Gate was affected for a while during the protest attended by Priyanka Gandhi.

THICK FOG IN DEHLI

Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad today saw a thick blanket of smog covering the region and the AQI (AIR QUALITY INDEX ) plunged to the “very poor” group atmosphere.

It seems that the crop residue burning in the nearby states of Punjab and Haryana are contributing to polluting the air. At around 8:30 am, the overall AQI in Delhi docked up at 309.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has shared an image from NASA showing large-scale stubble burning in adjoining states. Sharing the images, the Delhi government said: “The latest image from NASA shows large-scale crop residue burning in states surrounding Delhi.”

The image showed stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, along with other areas.The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government has blamed these stubble burning activity.

From the past one week, the air quality of the national capital has seen constantly decreasing. The smog level will rise, particularly after the Diwali festival. The situation may begin to worsen during the November start as that will be peak time for burning .
