Top women public relations executives engaged in a stimulating discussion on how purpose-driven PR can affect social change, foster community engagement and contribute to the holistic development of the nation, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti at the Communication Conclave 2024 organized by the Public Relations Society of Delhi (PRSD).

The debate, moderated by Dr Samir Kapur, Director, Adfactors, featured a distinguished panel of speakers comprising Ms Akanksha Jain, Head PR and Communications BharatPe, Ms Jyoti Rai, Sr Communications & PR Strategist South Asia, Rotary International, Ms Tehseen Zaidi, Head External Communications, Syngenta Pvt Ltd, and Ms Akshita Agrawal, Communications and PR Lead, Magicbricks.

Ms Tehseen Zaidi started out by sharing her experience of working towards empowering women while she recounted her personal journey beginning from a modest background in a small town and the learnings which inspired her to emerge as a force for change for women in rural India. She said this can be helped by creating an interlinked chain of women who empower each other. She also highlighted the scope and impact of change-making CSR as a powerful force while sharing initiatives launched for uplifting rural women and farmers who are now earning their own livelihoods.

Ms Akshita Agrawal talked about her interest in human development and bringing a woman’s perspective to communication and brand management and her continuing endeavour to charting a new path amid traditional mindsets and stereotypes. Recalling her experience of breaking the mould by being the first in her family to enter the world of public relations and the pride of being a first-generation PR leader, she also stressed the importance of the right opportunities at the right time.

Speaking about fostering a collaborative spirit while making strident efforts to make your voice heard as a woman, Ms Akanksha Jain said that this is ultimately reflected in the kind of communication campaigns that are developed with a new understanding. She also mentioned the challenges of being a woman in a corporate environment and how she navigated her way through them to emerge as a leader. Women also possess a natural ability to establish emotional connections which is crucial in communication, she emphasised.

For her part, Ms Jyoti Rai shared her experience of working in the field of health and education for targeting traditionally marginalised sections of women and children as beneficiaries and the significance of effective communication which can drive positive change. She talked about the huge potential for communication and PR for social development in the government and private sectors. As an example, she narrated her role in the brand campaign for successful eradication of polio in India.

In conclusion, the panellists agreed that the foundation for a strong nation is ultimately laid down by strong women even as they called for a national resolve to strengthen ‘Nari Shakti’.

Thank you very much to BIMTECH for inviting me to their 36th Foundation Day. I come from a family of engineers—a very determined family that ensured everyone studied well. There were not many financial resources back then. I often think that being able to speak in more than one language outside the country allows me to communicate with everyone. It is a huge investment for the generation, which never thought of buying a car but invested more in the education of all of us. From a determined family with limited means to witnessing life’s complexities, I learned that challenges come in various forms. My journey through journalism and Indian mass communication unveiled hidden stories of dignity and resilience. Charity, while well-intentioned, should aim for sustainable empowerment, not dependency. We must cherish our education and uphold the dignity of every individual. Let us work together, regardless of our backgrounds, to build a nation where honesty and ambition drive progress. Subsidies are opportunities, not entitlements, and giving back enriches us all. In a world where education remains our most enduring subsidy, let’s ensure it reaches everyone.”

Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH, delivered a welcome speech in which he emphasized the remarkable development of the institute from a small basement in New Delhi to one of the top B-schools. He highlighted the institute’s tireless efforts to raise awareness about ESG in both the corporate and academic spheres.

Also, he welcomed to host Mr. Anshu Gupta, a true disciple of Gandhi who left his corporate career to embark on a transformative journey. His organization, Goonj, exemplifies Gandhi’s principles in addressing pressing global challenges, earning international recognition. It stands as a beacon of hope in the face of climate change, sustainability, and humanitarian issues.

He said, “Mahatma Gandhi’s eleven vows, including truth, nonviolence, simplicity, and duty towards humanity, remain profoundly relevant, not just in India but across the globe. BIMTECH’s choice to commence on October 2nd, Gandhi’s birthday, reflects his enduring impact. Albert Einstein once remarked, ‘Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.’ Gandhi’s influence on our world cannot be overstated.”

In keeping with its illustrious heritage of encouraging significant contributions to education, the BIMTECH administration also bestowed various honours, like the Basant Kumar Birla Distinguished Scholar Award, 2022; the Best Researcher and Teaching Excellence Award, 2022; and the felicitation of faculty and staff completing 10 years of service.

On this occasion, the Insurance India Report, and the Annual Activity Report were also released.

The insurance report has articles from many eminent names in the business, like Shri G.N. Bajpai, ex-Chairman SEBI and LIC; Shri Sakate Khaitan, Senior Partner, Khaitan Legal Associates; and Shri Tapan Singhel, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Co. Ltd. It also suggests regulatory reforms in the insurance sector. It is noteworthy to note that BIMTECH offers a PGDM in Insurance Business Management. The celebrations concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. K. C. Arora, Registrar of BIMTECH.

Swachhata Ke 6 Saal, Bemisaal

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is celebrating the sixth anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) by organizing a webinar titled ‘Swachhata Ke 6 Saal, Bemisaal’ on 2nd October 2020. The day, which also marks the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, will focus on celebrating the achievements of the past six years under the Mission along with experience sharing by States and cities and partner organizations. Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (I/C), MoHUA will chair the Webinar on the occasion along with Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary, MoHUA and Shri Kamran Rizvi, Additional Secretary, MoHUA.

The Minister will release a compendium and a dynamic GIS portal showcasing innovative practices for effective solid waste management (SWM) practices from across India. Alongside, a document on Response of Indian Cities Towards Covid-19: A Sanitation Perspective prepared by NIUA, ‘Frontline Stories of Resilience: India’s Sanitation Champions’ – a collection of inspirational stories of sanitation workers compiled by the National Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (NFSSM) Alliance and a Toolkit for Safety of Sanitation Workers prepared by Urban Management Centre (UMC) will also be released by the Ministry.

The second half of the session will focus on experience sharing of the past six years by select States and cities and chalking out the next steps towards a Swachhatam Bharat. The event will be an opportunity for all stakeholders to learn from each other and envision the next phase of the Mission.

Since its launch in 2014, SBM-U has made significant progress in the area of both sanitation and solid waste management. 4,327 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been declared ODF so far. This has been made possible through construction of more than 66 lakhs individual household toilets and over 6 lakhs community/ public toilets, far exceeding the Mission’s targets. The Mission is now focusing on holistic sanitation through its ODF+ and ODF++ protocols with a total of 1,319 cities certified ODF+ and 489 cities certified ODF++ as on date. Additionally, over 59,900 toilets across 2900+ cities have been made live on Google Maps. In the area of solid waste management, 97% of wards have complete door-to door collection, 77% of wards have source segregation of waste while 67% of the total waste generated is being processed – a jump of nearly 4 times over 2014 levels of 18% processing. A total of 6 cities (Indore, Ambikapur, Navi Mumbai, Surat, Rajkot and Mysuru) have been rated as 5-star cities, 86 cities as 3-Star and 64 cities as 1-Star, as per MoHUA’s Star Rating Protocol for Garbage Free Cities. Moreover, from being a government program, the Mission has transformed into a people’s movement, a true ‘Jan Andolan’ with participation of over 12 crore citizens being recorded in Swachh Survekshan 2020, the last edition of the annual cleanliness survey conducted by MoHUA. The Mission has also laid great emphasis on providing dignified livelihoods to all sanitation workers and informal waste pickers which is directly in line with Mahatma’s vision of ensuring equality and inclusion for all sections of society. To this end, the Mission has successfully integrated over 84,000 informal waste pickers into the mainstream while over 5.5 lakh sanitation workers have been linked to various welfare schemes under the Government.

Capacity building of officials and staff of ULBs has been an integral part of the Mission. As part of this endeavor, the Ministry, with the help of National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has conducted over 150 workshops across India witnessing the participation of over 6,000 officials representing over 3,200 ULBs.

Swachh Bharat Mission, the flagship program of the Government of India, was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 2nd October 2014 from Rajghat, New Delhi and aimed to achieve the vision of a ‘Clean India’ by 2nd October 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. The urban component of the Mission which is being steered by MoHUA had the broad objectives of making urban India open defecation free (ODF) along with modern and scientific waste management through large scale behavior change among citizens.
