Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that his government will allow India to send a humanitarian shipment of 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat to neighbouring Afghanistan through its territory after finalisation of the transit modalities.

Khan, who chaired the first Apex Committee meeting of the newly established Afghanistan Inter-ministerial Coordination Cell (AICC) in Islamabad, also took the opportunity to remind the international community of the collective responsibility to support Afghanistan to avoid a humanitarian crisis.

During the meeting, Khan announced Pakistan’s decision to allow the 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat India has offered to provide Afghanistan as humanitarian assistance to go through Pakistan as soon as modalities are finalised with the Indian side, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.

Currently, Pakistan only allows Afghanistan to export goods to India but doesn’t allow any other two-way trade through the border crossing.

Last month, India announced 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat for Afghanistan as humanitarian assistance and requested Pakistan to ship the food grain via the Wagah border.

Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi had also requested Prime Minister Khan to allow India to transport wheat via Pakistan, suggesting that the Taliban government was willing to accept the humanitarian assistance from India.

The Prime Minister] announced Pakistan’s decision to allow the 50,000 MT of wheat India has offered to provide Afghanistan as humanitarian assistance to go through Pakistan as soon as modalities are finalised with the Indian side,” the Pakistan PM’s office said, adding that Pakistan has also decided to facilitate “the return of Afghan patients who had gone to India for medical treatment and are stuck there”.

MEA yet to respond to announcement

The Ministry of External Affairs did not respond to the announcement from Pakistan. On November 11, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said India was looking at all possibilities to transfer the aid “but there have been difficulties due to lack of unimpeded access”.

Asked why India had not sent the aid through the Chabahar port in Iran to the Afghan border, the route it had employed in the last few years, officials declined to comment, but suggested that the route would prove too circuitous given the immediate need in Afghanistan.

The offer of wheat and other medical supplies was made formally to the Taliban regime by a Ministry of External Affairs delegation that attended the Moscow format conference in Russia and met Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi on October 20.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved to increase the authorized capital of Food Corporation of India (FCI) from existing Rs.3,500 crore to Rs.10,000 crore.

With the increase of authorized capital, additional equity capital can be infused in FCI through Union Budget, to fund the foodgrains stock, perpetually held by FCI. This will reduce the borrowings of FCI, save interest cost of FCI and reduce food subsidy in consequence.

The operations of Food Corporation of India require maintaining perpetual stock of foodgrains which needs to be funded by the Govt. of India through equity or long term loan. The Govt. of India is providing equity to FCI for maintaining stocks. The present authorized equity capital of FCI is Rs.3,500 crore and paid up equity capital as on 31.03.2019 is Rs.3,447.58 crore.

Food Corporation of India was constituted under the Food Corporations Act, 1964, to implement the food policy of Government of India. Its primary objective is to ensure Minimum Support Price to farmers, maintain buffer stock of foodgrains and distribution of foodgrains under National Food Security Act and other welfare schemes of Govt. of India.

New Delhi: Plaza Premium Lounge (PPL), the world’s largest award-winning, independent lounge network has collaborated with Feeding India, a non-profit organization together being operated by the co-founder – Ankit Kawatra and Zomato, in a bid to fight hunger and make sure no food wastage. PPL has pledged to feed more than 1,000 children a month. The initiative intends to give to the nation’s fight against hunger, poverty and to discuss the problem of food wastage.

“Whether its Indian weddings or major hospitality chains, due to the mass production of food, there is definite wastage, too. In a country like India, poverty and hunger have become the two most vital issues that need to be addressed at this hour. Our pledge is to cut wastage of food and pass this message on to the society as well,” remarks Bhavya Kukreja, GM PR & MARCOM, Plaza Premium Group. He also shared that, “As we put forth our helping hand to the society, we aim to give fresh and healthy food to the needy”.

PPL together with Feeding India has started serving surplus food to needy children around IGI Airport’s T1 Lounge. Now, with the success of the first phase, the plan is to redirect the excess food from the other lounges too. There remains a surplus amount of food that can be of great help to feed the undernourished segments of society. Although, it has started from T1, but they soon plan to expand to all the terminals in Delhi, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

Presently, the food is picked straight from the kitchen of IGI Airport -T1 by the Feeding India Hunger Heros during lunch hours after a thorough scrutiny of food safety including safety and hygiene, afterwards, it is delivered to the children of Delhi in need, within a stipulated time, to keep its freshness.

“We are enthralled to collaborate along with Plaza Premium Lounge in this mission to eradicate hunger and poverty. With the help of Feeding India’s Magic Wheels (food recovery vehicles), the entire process is managed end-to-end wherein the food from all the lounges is collected and donated to the people in need. This idea ensures almost zero food wastage and supports all those who cannot get a supply of adequate or regular access to fresh and healthy food. I am grateful to the Plaza Premium Group’s team, especially Bhavya Kukreja, for leading this initiative and we hope that this sends out a strong message to all the other food cafeterias to come forward, step up and give their extra food too,” said Ankit Kwatra, Founder, Feeding India.

Feeding India serves over 1.1 million people a day. Food delivery platform Zomato has acquired Feeding India, a non-profit organisation with an aim to serve at least 100 million underprivileged people every month. Plaza Premium Lounge is a part of this noble cause and determined to serve people who have little or no access to food.
